In the carbon cycle, carbon dioxide is removed from the atmosphere by plants by the process of photosynthesis, which the plant uses to convert into the carbon-based sugar called glucose. When animals eat plants, they use the glucose for respiration, which releases the gas carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.
If an organism dies - decomposers such as detritus feeders, fungi and bacteria decay dead biomass, they use the carbon-based sugars for respiration, which adds carbon dioxide to the atmosphere. If an organism dies and it is preserved, over millions of years it can form fossil fuels. When a fossil fuel combusts, it releases carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.
