I made it with pink grapefruit since I can’t get white and BG Reynolds falernum syrup and rich simple. Probably turned out a bit sweeter than with the correct ingredients. I really liked it, but I really like 151 Demerara .
So fortunately I had all the ingredients on hand to play along. I wouldn't characterize it so much as booze forward like Spike but would call it 151 demerara rum forward which is a very prominent flavor right up front (and center and back). If I were to do this again (which I'm sure I will) I would reduce the 151 to maybe half an ounce and up the other rums in volume. Great episode. Love the history and the info from the menu.
SBCH staple ? is “What’s your favorite tiki bar?” I often think what tiki temple do I wish I could’ve visited in its heyday and The Luau in the mid 50s tops my list. The glamour of LA at that time would’ve been so amazing.😎
I tried the recipe, and it's a lot more flavorful than tr he was original Trader Vic's Zombie is, but yes, quite strong. I'd make it again, but I used the last of my falarnum so I would need to restock 1st. 🗿🏴☠️🍹
It's cork! I can tell you all about it I mean look at that thing When I put it in a bottle, everything changed! I can't imagine a more beautiful thing!
Great episode. Honestly, I would just have a Zombie. But I am sure this is a good cocktail. Having the ingredients (because I make zombies all the time) I will have to try it. : )
So, I'm looking at the recipe and it is a lot like a Jet Pilot without cinnamon syrup, or a Zombie with the grenadine and cinnamon, I wonder if you couldn't get the flavor of this drink using Ed Hamilton's Zombie blend and be able to drink more than one of them in a night?
Looks like a pretty good drink! We'll definitely be trying this one. And we're only 16 episodes from being caught up with SBCH! (There's cool merch in our near future....)
Yo I have never seen this channel, I was looking up a movie called Hollywood's War on God. And I was like Oh, tiki... I love this, the history on the dude, All his wives and debauchery there in Hollywood, just another example of what is to be expected out of that place.... I just have to say "IT LOOKS LIKE A CRACK PIPE BUT IT'S NOT.". This dude is funny! I will be watching more of these

Fantastic! I love Tiki Time Travel. Steve Crane was like 1950s Pete Davidson LOL
That mug is a serious gift! $$$

Great episode! I had no clue about Steve Crane’s background. The drink looks very similar to a Jet Pilot, which is hands down my fave.
Corks are the best! I love that satisfying “pop!” sound as you pop them.
Great video, but by the gods the interaction with the Cruzan was priceless 🤣 CHEERS FROM BOSTON!
Very nice one Spike! Great vintage vibe on this one. BTW: With a name like "War God" it had better be boozy ;)
Man!!!! Great episode!!!! Love the history, the pictures and especially the description of the place.🤯 Awesome!!!
Man. Still recovering after that Panties experience. Anyone else? Intense dude!
😂
Loved this episode. Reading from the original menu and the photos of the restaurant … Amazing. Love when you pepper the videos with Tiki history 👏
Great video, Spike! We would love to travel back in time to see the Luau, too!
corked bottles of any spirit tells me that it has elegant sophisticated flavours!
Just add one more quarter ounce of simple syrup and it smooths right out. Balances and simplifies the recipe.

Very interesting episode!! I see it’s now a Luxury boutique on North Rodeo Drive.
Great episode! Loved the history and the passion. Plan on making the War God this weekend.
Good to see these kinds of episodes.
Another great episode in the books, Spike! Sad to not see you interact with a guest, but you’re a great presenter solo as well.

Incredible history and another incredible episode! Thanks again Spike!
Aloha from Indy once again :) GREAT vid... I too am digging the history content! I'll have to toast Mr Crane again next time I'm at the Inferno.
It's cork! I can tell you all about it I mean look at that thing When I put it in a bottle, everything changed! I can't imagine a more beautiful thing!
Thanks for another excellent video!
Aw, dude, so rad! - Spike, in every episode 😂
Hahaha...
A great show !!!!!
Great episode! Love the history and pictures!
Corks are AMAZING!!! 🎉
Loved this one!
I like corks... Exsept when they break.
Sooo interesting…great idea for an episode ❤
Aloha from Burlington, VT! I am a HUGE cork fan! Bottles with corks separate the men from the boys!

I believe she ditched him when she found out he was not from $ as he had intimated. Beachbum Berry tells his backstory in one of his books

Awesome!
Reduce all the rums in this recipe to a half ounce for a better balanced drink.
Aloha, Spike 🤙! 🗿🌺 From Kim and Sean
dope episode, i don't know if there are many other old menus that tell such a good tale of the spot but would like you to read them if so :)
I’m just having a daiquiri tonight, but I will certainly be trying the War God very soon!
Sure wish Hamilton could get his rums in CO. Crap, they legalized pot here, long ago, and I can't even get some rum for some dumb reason.
Thumbs up for corks.
Those are bottle stoppers, I think. Some are glass, rubber, or cork.
I still can't find any Steve Crane mugs at decent price
needed more rum
Great episode, Spike! I love hearing about Stephen Crane! I actually have one of those mugs, too. Oh, and I fucking hate corks. 🙂
Hahahaha... no you don't, you monster!

Curious as to where you got this recipe for the War God. I couldn't find it in any of Beachbum Berry's books
It was in a book about tiki in Ohio.
I LOVE 💖😍💝 CORKS!!🍷🥃🍹
This one is basically a Jet Pilot (arguably Crane’s most famous cocktail) without the cinnamon syrup and Puerto Rican rum, right?
Spike lives!
"That went right up my nose," is the prefered way to take a nice rum.
(please don't)
Great episode but I miss the interaction and banter of having a co-host.
🍹🍹🍹
puffer fish lights tiki or not ?
Absolutely

I've noticed that boozy cocktails made of rum are OK but a boozy gin, vodka, whisky etc cocktail will not be as good.
