The late 60s and early 70s were filled with raising awareness of the plight of Native Americans. Johnny Cash and the actor Marlon Brando used their celebrity status to draw attention to it.

I remember when this song came out and how my generation were starting to learn about the how the Native North Americans were cheated and treated. I also remember how my parents reacted to it and I was surprised, confused and angry. So much prejudice. Speaking as a white Canadian, there are so many shameful attitudes and actions.

@@timcarr6401 In your mind that excuses the atrocities visited upon Native Americans? Europeans had a long history of massacring each other as well. Perhaps they should have been conquered by an alien race, too?

@@timcarr6401 Yes, there were rival tribes. But they kept things in balance and did not irradiate the entire race to a dwindling few. White Germans fought English. English fought the Irish and Scotts. War is everywhere. People have always fought wars.. especially over land. But the early Politicians went far and beyond extremes. The Native Americans were deliberately infected with blankets carrying smallpox. Bows and arrows were no contest against the riffles. And whether anyone believes it or not, white people began scalping the Natives to take their long black hair as a trophy. Native Americans fought back and in turn scalped the white people. You cannot compare small tribal wars on a continent as vast as the Americas with the near total genecide on the Native Americans. Children are taught to hate and the prejudices that are still around today.

Paul Revere & the Raiders formed in Boise, Idaho in 1958. They went to Portland,Oregon in 1960 & began playing in the small club & lounges there. In 1965, they became the “house band” on Dick Clark’s TV show,”Where the action is.” They had multiple hits during the middle to late 1960s & were very popular. Indian Reservation was a number one hit in 1971 & it was their biggest charting song. Paul Revere died October 4th,2014. During their time from 1958 until Paul’s death in 2014 they had 14 studio albums, 2 live albums, 15 compilation albums, and 39 top 10 singles. I was a big fan back in my wayward youth.

God bless them even with their own problems they tried to help an other people thousands of miles away.

Believe it or not, the last “Indian” boarding schools were closed in the 1980s and 1990s. These boarding schools were simply the worst of everything that was done to indigenous peoples in North America. Not only did these schools strip every single ounce of culture and history away, these schools also taught the Native Children that they were never going to be good enough. These stolen children were told over and over again that they were less than human, less than white.
Even now, on a national level, Native Americans are still less than. Only in state and local elections does our vote matter. How often does a Presidential candidate come visit the Blackfoot in Browning or the Chippewa-Cree on Rocky Boy ( Stone Child )?
Natives were made to take Christian names, learn of the Christian religion but treated in less than Christian ways. Abuse, physical, emotional and sexual was rampant.
Remember this concept, “ Kill the Indian: Save the man”. Captain Pratt said what needed to happen was to “ kill the Indian in him and save the man”.
We are a minorities minority. Unless your Native, you never consider the Native Americans first when considering minorities. Black and Hispanic or Latinos, maybe Jews or Asians, Middle Easterners.
We read stories that become national news when some white gurl goes missing, but our own state barely makes note of a missing Native girl. We needed to start a movement for at least some people to take us serious. The “Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women” movement is what’s trying to bring to light what is an epidemic to Native Females across our continent.
      Native Americans deserve better, still.

This band had a few big hits like "Hungry", "Just Like Me", "Kicks", "Good Thing"-all solid pop/rock songs. They had a lot of different styles: bluesy on "Over You", songs that are totally 60s like "Too Much Talk","Cinderella Sunshine", "Mr. Sun and Mr. Moon" and a song I know Amber would love "Birds Of A Feather" as it's got the horns, it's about being in the country, all sweet hippy music.

I’ve always loved this band and song. So happy you are finally checking them out. The 70’s were an opening of all of our eyes to look deeper into what our government does. Past and present. I was born in 68, but was raised to look at everyone as just a human being and stop classifying by race. That may have something to do with being raised in Europe for some of my childhood. And when I learned what our country did to the Native people of this nation I was upset for them. Even if my ancestors didn’t come until late 1800’s. Learning about this history changed the way I think.

I really hope you'll check out Buffy Sainte-Marie. She's a Canadian-American singer of Cree heritage who got her start in the '60s as a singer songwriter and activist. She's in her 80s now and still performs.
Her song "Universal Soldier" was a huge hit for Donovan. I find her original recording very powerful. "Until It's Time For You To Go" is a beautiful love song that has been covered by many artists including Neil Diamond and Elvis Presley. "My Country: ’Tis of Thy People You’re Dying" is a powerful song about the gross injustices endured by indigenous peoples. She's the first indigenous person to win an Oscar for co-writing the song "Up Where We Belong", performed by Joe Cocker and Jennifer Warnes for the film "An Officer and a Gentleman". And then there's her powerful protest song "Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee".
Somewhere in the middle of all that she got blacklisted for her involvement with the American Indian Movement and was surprised years later to find out there's an FBI file on her.
This year, a documentary film about her life, music, and activism was released. "Buffy Sainte-Marie: Carry It On" is well worth watching.

It’s really a lamentation of the Indian nation as a whole. The way the song is done it’s spine tingling dark and ominous. Yet it gives a glimmer of hope in the end. Cherokee nation will return.

I understand that Mark Lindsey, the lead singer, is part native American, and I might be wrong, but I think I heard him say in an interview that Cherokee is part of his native American heritage. I was around 9 years old when my girlfriend Cheryl and I started getting into her older brother's record collection and we discovered Paul Revere and the Raiders. We played it because the album cover had these cute guys dressed in Revolutionary War Uniforms and there was a gorgeous dark-haired boy the center with a ponytail. Yes, we chose music solely on how cute the boys on the cover were. I have been a fan for 60 years, and I still think that Mark Lindsey was one of the best-looking singers ever. This was actually the last song the band put out that charted, and also their only number 1 song. Paul Revere, the organist died about 2 years ago, but I think Mark Lindsey is still alive and works in the recording industry as some sort of executive. He was actually an amazing saxophone player too. This band had hits from around 1963 to 1970. Another one of their big hits was "Kicks" which was actually an anti-drug song that charted at a time when sex, drugs and rock and roll were ramping up. I always figured that Paul Revere and the Raiders was pretty much a "bubble-gum band because of the costumes, the heartthrob eye-candy and the fact that so many of us teeny-boopers were their hardcore fans. But now as I actually listen to them they were a pretty hard rocking band. Not much in the way of ballads and love songs, more in line with the Rolling Stones than the Beatles or the Association.

The vibrato on that last organ note is coming out of a speaker that's spinning on a turntable connected to a foot pedal to adjust the speed of the turntable. It's called a Leslie speaker. Stevie Ray Vaughan was well known for playing his guitar through a Leslie speaker.

This song was NOT Paul Revere and the Raiders but it was actually a solo performance by Mark Lindsay and because of some contractual obligations the band appeared in this video and was credited with the single. None of the members of the band other than Lindsay were on the recording. Thanks for pulling up the Raiders. They were a fun band.

    • @rolo1955
      @rolo1955 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

You're right. It was a Mark Lindsay follow up to his top 10 hit, "Arizona," which happens to be a song about a girl named Arizona, not the state.
It was recorded by Mark Lindsay and the Wrecking Crew with Hal Blaine doing that wonderful drum work. However, Paul Revere deserves credit. The story goes, he toured the country on his motorcycle, promoting the song, because he believed the song was going to take off on the charts, and it paid off. Even though the album covers say, "The Raiders," people still say Paul Revere and the Raiders due to the fanaminal success they had in the 1960's!

This was such a change in style for Paul Revere and the Raiders. Mark Lindsey (the lead singer here) took this in a much more low key way. Paul Revere (the organist) was known as a mad man of rock. He often played a organ with the front of a Ford Mustang covering the front of the organ. He was known for his stage antics. I was fortunate to meet him one time when they were playing a fair engagement. He was very easy to talk with and open to doing whatever it took to promote the show. They performed for close to 50 years I believe..

Paul Revere and the Raiders were very popular in the late 60's. They hosted a summer replacement series on ABC, Groups perform, kids dance. It was basically American Bandstand with them instead of Dick Clark. Paul Revere (yes, that is his real name) was the namesake of the group, though m,ark Lindsey was the lead singer.

I saw them several times in the 80s and 90s, and man, what a fun show they put on! Dancing in time with each other, Paul's nonsensical keyboard car, non-stop energy and silliness, ersatz colorful costumes and undeniable tightness and musical ability. On top of that they had some truly great songs. This lip-synch video is totally tame compared to their true live shows. They had tons of hits, thanks in part to their TV show Where the Action Is. Check out Hungry, Kicks or Just Like Me.

Paul Revere and the Raiders were everywhere in the mid-60s. They were the house band for Dick Clark's Where the Action Is summer shows 9 shows on YT) and the later Happenings 68&69. They wore colonial matching uniforms and tri-cornered hats as a counterpoint to the British Invasion. They also pre-dated the Monkees. Some said the schtick with the uniforms and choreographed dance moves hurt their careers and to some degree it did. The group also had a revolving door for group members. However, all of them were very talented players. Take a listen to Kicks, one of the first anti-drug songs, and dig into their catalog. I think you might be surprised.

Don Farden had a hit with this song in 1968, whilst Paul Revere & co had the biggest hit with it in 1971. I just listened to a version by a singer called Marvin Rainwater, who I believe was a Cherokee Indian, who originally released the song in 1959! Marvin's version was called "Pale Faced Indian", which is the original title of the song, and it's pretty good and spooky at the same time. Have a listen.

In the early to mid 70's we moved to Southern MS, near Runnelstown and Petal, and we often found stone tips after fields were plowed and it had rained. It is said the Choctaw lived in this region, central and southern MS, before they too agreed to "Treaties" in the early 1800's to give up all of their land in MS (area of about 2/3 of the young state) for promised land in Oklahoma as well as an annuity. An annuity which there is no trace of ever being payed.
