    As a subscriber of your channel and 2-year self-learning student of bonsai, I'm super pleased to see this. Travel permitting, you guys should definitely head down to Mirai or other professionals' bonsai gardens - there is so much to see and I feel you and Ryan Neil will have so much to nerd out about when it comes to horticulture. I know your work prior to youtube is also important and prolific - I'm sure you'd love the rigour and depth of bonsai.

    Thank you so much for this lovely clip about bonsai with a real bonsai connaiseur in the name of John. I have several times rewounded and played so as to well assimilate the content. As a non American I also appreciate the very clear and without hard accent of the English spoken by both of you. Again thank you and my dream is to be able to pay both of you in the midst of your plants. However if ever you are here in my tiny island Mauritius, lost in the Indian Ocean do let me know as I could show you some of my bonsais and our lovely native flora.

    My parents had trouble with bears getting into their birdfeeders, too. They came up with a genius improvisation: They ran a cord across the trees overhead and created a pulley system. It looked like a high clothesline. They hung the bird feeders up just high enough that the bears couldn’t swat them down. The pulley system allowed them to bring them down to refill. The shepherd’s hooks don’t really work well if you have bears - we found one of our out in the woods and the feeder was covered in bite and claw marks.

    Just putting it out there but he mentioned Rochester a few times, and that’s where the national exhibition is going to be next month. I doubt anyone will see this, but this is my main hobby, and it’s hold is relatively small and relatively fragile in the states. If you’re at all interested in bonsai, and you’re in the New York State area and you have $50 you should get a ticket. There will likely be some of the best specimens in the country, and there will definitely be almost every leading expert in the country as well as vendors selling material. I’m not affiliated with it, but I’m coming up from Texas and I’m sure those ticket sales and the interest they could generate would really be valuable to the people making it happen.

    I suppose you have to use specific wire to shape the bonsai because I tried to use a craft wire and as the tree grew the wire cut into the branches. I ended up removing the wire and now the branches of course have the imprints of the wire in them. Do you ever take the wire off? I don’t have a garage (just a basement) to house bonsai in the winter. Would it be okay in a cool basement (in the 60’s) or possibly outside protected from the harshest of winter temps (Iowa).

    • @richardperry9165
      @richardperry9165 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Usually aluminum or copper wires are used. Copper is used specifically on conifers. And yes, you definitely take wire off once the branches are set. A little bit of scaring is okay and common -- it will usually heal in a couple years. However be careful not to let it stay on too long or you'll get a candy cane stripe down your tree.
      In winter, your trees are more suseptible to the cold because bonsai pots are shallow and insulate worse than the ground. Your trees don't need to be protected from all frost, but yes it's a good idea to take them into some place where they won't get blasted during the coldest months.

    • @brendakirk7250
      @brendakirk7250 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@richardperry9165 Thank you for your kind response. I have always loved the look of bonsai and tried to grow one or two myself with no luck. I have a ficus benjamina which I've propagated a few times and thought it could turn into a bonsai. I grow them as indoor outdoor plants. I figured if I can transform one of them into a neat design maybe I could try my hand at grow some other varieties of trees again.

      @@brendakirk7250 Ficus benjamina make great tropical bonsai! I would say that they are a good first choice. My tips would be to use bonsai soil (as opposed to potting soil) and work on developing the tree's trunk.

    Wish you had asked about his going out to collect the trees. Are there permits needed? I imagine on private property, all that is needed would be permission. Can't imagine they want people going around ripping out trees whilly nilly, especially 100 year old trees. I mean they have been growing in that spot, on that rock for 100 years. Who is to say whether it is going to "last" or not. It must like it there.....I mean it has made it there this long.🌱

    • @summerrayneoakes
      @summerrayneoakes  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Permits are not needed on private property, but yes, if you're collecting in public areas, you apply, which isn't too laborious of a process depending on what you're collecting. The trees he has collected are common species.
