The Insane Plan to Build a Skyscraper Hanging Down from Space!

  • Imagine that one morning you wake up in a wonderful mood.
    Then you mosey on over to the window, gaze outside, and... freeze in complete and utter terror!
    There is a vast, black emptiness behind the glass... no trees, no clouds, no nothin’!
    You rush to the door, fling it open, and all you can see is a yawning abyss.
    You are simply in a skyscraper, and not just any skyscraper - the coolest skyscraper in the world!
    The thing is: this is no ordinary dwelling, but a domicile flipped upside down, hanging from orbit like an apple from a tree.

      @@Marcin18x you're right that ideas like this are completely nonsense, but conspiracy theories around the nature of space and government coverups are as far fetched themselves. The idea that global governments would cooperate to coverup the nature of space (particularly the USSR and USA during the cold war) is incredibly unlikely. As for hard evidence, you can view local satellites, certain planets depending on the time of year, and entire star systems from your backyard with just a cheap telescope. For me the most telling sign that we at least grasp the fundamentals of the universe is our use of mathematics and physics, and the fact that most macro physics can be readily observered. Even if you find mainstream theories questionable, there are plenty of academic and reasonable ideas that don't fall into the conspiracy theory territory that usually raise more questions than they answer.

      @Thomas Barenbaum It could be as soon as 2050 we'll see a space elevator. It'll replace a conventional rocket launch, bring down the cost to $600 per lb, tether the shaft to a spaceport/space station full of inhabitants (numbering in the tens of thousands), and no risk of the elevator falling over , since physics will do most of the work (thinking of playing with a yo-yo). The Space elevator will rotate with the Earth, tethered to a heavy asteroid and the spaceport itself 62,000 MILES in altitude, not 30 miles like this insane plan of hanging a skyscraper

    • @alt8791
      @alt8791 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@alexraskalove7119 Space elevators are completely unfeasible. In order to make it work, every object larger than a paint fleck in orbit below geostationary would have to be removed, lest it impact the tether with the force of a small nuclear bomb. With the broadband megaconstellations being built by SpaceX, Amazon, and others, this task slips even further out of reach. Also, I highly doubt that the NRO would be willing to give up their spy satellites, and refuse to believe that Russia, China, or Iran would do the same. Also, the end station would be sitting in geostationary orbit at the equator, conveniently located exactly where the Van Allen Belts are the most intense. Anyone spending any serious time there (more than a day or so) would be fried. Finally, to get satellites into other orbits (like the much more useful polar orbit for earth observation), rockets would still be needed to change the inclination. And, as mentioned above, all lower orbits would be rendered unusable due to the fact that they would inevitably impact the cable (which is conveniently positioned, by necessity, in the one latitude on earth where every orbiting object will hit it).

      @scribblescrabble3185 5 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      @Panda Spike The fact, some architect made a design of a skyscraper suspended from an asteroid a few years ago. You will get more facts, if you look at the physics and math. No cabel can suspend its own weight for the required length, not even super-high-performance-tensile-strength-superalusteal-etc cabels, that would need to reach further out than the geosynchronous orbit, not 31 miles. not the only number in this video that were completely wrong, the only correct ones (of the top of my head) were the atmospheric conditions on Venus (with the exception of the hydrochlorid in the atmosphere, its sulfuric acid). Also at that point you should have been more sceptical; placing a rock in a 31 mile orbit(!) in an 1 bar atmosphere :D ...
      tl,dr: It is a pipedream, or to use a german word, a "Luftschloss".
      On a sidenote: NASA had made plans for a colony in the venusian atmosphere, suspended by ballons(!) with breathable air that generate enough lift in an CO_2-atmosphere. That is actually possible, by numbers, but why colonise venus or mars, when we have a paradise here on earth. A yes, I forgot, we are destroying that one.

    • @do-repo9170
      @do-repo9170 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Let me tell you why it's impossible...
      First the astroid will orbit earth hmm okay they can do that, but earth has its own gravity that will pull the building down to earth unless the astroid would be so big that it will cover the sky atleast 1km²
      Second in order to keep that thing floating the astroid and atleast a third of the building has to be high up in 0 gravity, that high where we have space trash orbiting the earth at high speed, so the builders would probably be shot in the head by tiny metal objects
      And last but not least they have to find a perfect way for it to fly through places without hitting other skyscrapers which is barely possible in Dubai or New York, as this building will also have to be away from air traffic, cuz the world won't change that for one building lol
      Let alone safety and all this is impossible to do, especially with the economic problems the world is facing

      Alright, let's break down why this is impossible:
      1: The, for lack of a better word, _contraption,_ would be whizzing around at around Mach 1. How would you like to have your day ruined by a skyscraper roaring over your house at the speed of sound?
      2: It's impossible to control where it will go once it's in orbit. To mean, you can't keep it away from certain objects/structures like mountains once you set it in its orbit. The thing will slam in to Everest at the speed of sound and there isn't anything anyone can do about it.
      3: The constant drag from the atmosphere will slow it down, causing it to eventually fall out of orbit
      4: Every satellite ever launched will end up hitting this thing at some point. That's not a joke. It will be hit by every satellite ever. This is guaranteed by the structure would have to be built at the equator, which is the point of the planet that every spacecraft in space must fly over at some point. Therefore, every object in an orbit below geostationary would end up crossing paths with this thing at some point, where it would then impact with the equivalent force of a small nuclear device. If this thing were to be magically constructed today by a snap of my fingers, I would give it about 10 minutes before that happens and sends it crashing back to earth.

      The best materials available to make cables capable of holding such a tower have a flex co-efficient that would render the whole structure akin to a giant bungie cord. It's also been said that the energy required to move a large enough asteroid from the belt to the earth at sufficient speed would equal the entire energy generated by mankind on earth for the last 35 years.

Imagine this 100kms long building flying over speed of sound in atmosphere. Its way more than 300mph. Watch thunderfoots video on this giant shit show. I cant believe this channel didn’t even do a cursory google search on this. Shame.
