This is literally what happened in her real life. Her husband came out as gay after their divorce. They married at 21 or so but were together since high school. During their production of the nanny sitcom... something traumatic happened which caused their divorce...after which he came out as gay

He went to counseling
Soon told Fran he was gay
And she insisted then on divorcing as she said she was feeling soffocated by him
And the "emotional suffocation" I believe was his reaction to the attack they'd suffered together
