i am always amazed how well informed and educational these short videos are. they ask and answer the questions anyone would have when discovering art or artefacts in a museum or in situ.

The video states Egg Tempera is NOT transparent. It is in fact VERY transparent unless you add titanium white. The transparency is what gives it a luminous quality. It dries fast so dozens of glazes can be applied in a day!

    outstanding,
specifically the mention about painters in the same guild as pharmacists
and the gold leaf under natural flame lighting
really made this stuff come to life for my students

It is really a useful video to understand what is the type of painting techniques used in appreciating a Paint. It makes you know when observing and how is a paint done. I hope to all appreciating a paint or making a artworks to apply this too.

Excellent overview. I hope they'll revisit the Italian monastic painters soon!

At 8:10, a question is asked and the answer is, "It's very, very thin, which is important for a reason that we'll come to." This is answered starting at about 9:40.

How you spell the "Jaso" that paint on the wood before you apply Tempera? Thanks!

the second painting is not tempera, is oil colour!!. It's a work of Vermeer, much later than the period when tempera was not longer used.

i read that its egg white not egg yolk that is used

Painters could of course develop whatever formula suited them and some are thought to have used some amount of the white in addition to the yolk. Nevertheless, the yolk functioned as the primary binder in paintings such as this.

Stop repeating information over and over. I don't need to hear that the paint is egg based three times in five minutes. I also don't need to hear questions and their answers when the same exact information is given less than fifteen seconds earlier. Please, step it up and engage me when I'm being required to watch these for a class.

Some people are interested in learning for its own sake. Some people find it enriching and pleasing and rewarding to learn new things.

Painting in egg tempera is pretty fun, and it's helpful and interesting to know how the old masters did it.
