    My 86 comp prep SVO was my favorite fox I've owned. Best suspension & brakes offered on a fox from factory, plus factory 5 lug. It was an awesome car!

    I’ve always liked the SVOs . You have to remember these cars were ahead of their time . Introduced in 84 as a turbo car with great handling ( for the time anyway) 5 speed, 5 lug with the larger wheels. All around fun car but once you sat in a GT 5 speed you were sold on the torque. 😎

      I completely agree about them being ahead of their time especially for the value too. I hope to have one some day.

      There were a lot of ‘firsts’ with the SVO, most importantly rear disc brakes and 16” wheels on a mustang. Also, show me a domestic car that was running 15psi of boost stock, you won’t find one (GN’s were 12psi stock)!

    Svo's deserve more respect. They were WAY ahead of their time. They paved the way for the plethora of turbo 4 cyl. today.

    I will always give this car alot of praise, because I had a 1990 Thunderbird Supercoupe in white with a red leather interior, but I have driven many Turbocoupes, but I never had the opportunity to drive a SVO Fox body and I've always wanted to. I have two turbocharged Hondas, and I have always had a soft spot in my heart for the SVOs as well as the Merkurs. The 2.3 Lima is a very capable engine and is easily modified in stock form. I had a 94 Exploder that came with a 4.0, but I swapped in a 302 and put an Explorer Express supercharger kit with an Eaton M90 on it and it went on to make 490 whp with a smaller pulley (more boost), 90 lb injectors, a Walbro in-tank 450 LPH fuel pump, and it ran on an old school piggyback ECU. I have ALWAYS wanted either a SVO (which is really hard to find around here), or a Merkur XR4Ti (also very hard to find). Props to this man for a very clean build.

    I don’t think the SVO is ‘Hated’ among the Mustang community, might not be their favorite, but certainly not hated. If any of you were driving when they first came out, I can assure you it was the most ‘wanted’ mustang. I’ve owned my 86 SVO for over 20 years and 170k miles, and still daily drive it (took it to Ford Takeover back in May)..

    Starting to show interest in 4 bangers after using V8's for years, I was raised to think, " There is no replacement for displacement." I think many people were taught to think this way, so the SVO and turbo coupe died off early. It was truly ahead of its time. The 86 SVO was a computer controlled fuel injected turbo engine in 1986 that could match 5 liter of the day and was totally underappreciated. I'm looking for donor 87/88 T-Birds with manual a transmission or 86 SVO's with a manual transmission for a convertible 88 Mustang project which I recently acquired "to make what Ford should have have made years ago". I am hoping to create a structurally solid saleen style daily/weekend driver convertible with at least 225 hp at the rear wheels with at least 275 ft pounds of tourqe 2.3 turbo. Any thoughts or recommendations on my new project car. I found a SVO at wrecker than I'm negotiating for currently which is 86 svo with perfect front facia, grill, lights, front quarter panels and hood, no engine, smashed up rear panels from the major accident front seats and front center console are perfect as well. But from the back seats going rear ward is completely totaled, I would use the 88 convertible because the interior and body doesn't have blemish on it, original paint is nearly perfect except front facia, and there is no rust underneath 74, 000 miles on it. It's just a bad engine and cooked automatic transmission. So picture an 88 convertible with a svo front and svo engine.

    The only people saying svos are crap are those who never owned or drove one back in the day. The car had a kick ass turbo boost / acceleration that no v8 could match. The svo was a lot of fun and had a look and feel that made the 84 to 86 GTs feel cheap by comparison. The fat leather wrapped steering wheel, fat gatorbacks, 4 wheel discs, fuel injection, even unique exhaust. I loved this car. Sorry I had to sell mine in 89.

    I really used to hate them when I was younger the only thing I cannot stand about them still is that double stack Wing and I'm not much for how far the headlights sit back from the marker lights I know it changes and I believe 86 but other than that those cars came with some great features especially for back then... I'm really wanting a turbo coupe T-Bird but haven't been able to find one I want to get one for my daughter she wants a fox and I feel a little safer with her in a bigger car it just seems a little heavier and more solid for a first driver. it would be a fun driving project for us! really nice (early) model Foxbody, they did take from the SVO when they made the 87 & later GT with ground
    affects, split with 5.0 LX models. The fact was the SVO was close to the same price as the GT model with V8
    or turbo 4cyl., more so people picked the V8 GT model. Oh yeah what up with Fox Chamber??

The Ford dealer i got SVO from wanted to renegotiate the price up after ordering it by $800. I said "NOPE", as i waved the P&S contract in their face. P.S. they had 10 buyers waiting to buy it as it sat in their lot while getting prepped for delivery. I sold my SVO 2 years later with 25 K mi....for $16K cash (try that with a GT back then). There were debates at Ford wether to put a V6 or 4 cylinder in the SVO but they wanted to do something to really impress the automotive industry so in went the 2.3 Turbo. The automotive press repeatedly noted the very unbalanced 2.3 and Ford did nothing to fix it. My brother had a standard 2.3 in a 79 Fairmont. I drove an SVO at a car auction in 1995 and in my opinion it’s a terribly unbalanced engine that often doesn’t even make it to 100,000 miles before it needs a turbo or a complete engine rebuild. So when I bought a Pace Car in 1987 I got a V8.

    • @centraltexasfoxbodies

      I've seen many svo go very far with normal maintenance, not to mention they can handle lots of power and have an awesome oiling system.

      Yeah that 2.3 engine is an old design. I thought I read somewhere it was a German designed engine. They were put in the Ford Capris made in Europe. The Merkur XR4ti’s had them. I graduated in 1985 and in the 1980’s I religiously read anything Ford I could find in magazines.
      What makes me shake my head going on Facebook forums and mention things like the rare 1984-3/4 Mustang GT which had a 205hp engine, different T-5 transmission ratios, different size sway bars and a few other tweaks specific to it but different than the 1985 GT and also different than earlier 1984 GT’s,,, and other members of the group who are know it all’s say I’m making it up. The 1984-3/4 Mustang GT 302 that had a 5 speed manual was very close to the 1985 GT 5 speed engine minus the roller cam.

    • @centraltexasfoxbodies
      @centraltexasfoxbodies 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MustangsTrainsMowers if you think about it though the 302 is an even older design appearing in the 60s the 2.3 didn't come around untill the 70s and died in the 90s.
      But the 2.3 has a cult following I swapped my 79 pace car with an 85 svo drivetrain when I was in highschool and it was a fun car compared to the carb 2.3 turbo engine.
      I had a buddy with an ssp coupe and I'd walk that car everytime whether from a roll or a stop.

    • @MustangsTrainsMowers
      @MustangsTrainsMowers 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That 2.3 will never have the following that the 302 has. I’m sure that when you rebuilt a 2.3 have a machine shop balance it and it would run smoother. All in all Ford hit the target in the performance/ turning department with the SVO. Of course that was many years back. I'm a new edge dude. I have a mustang gt that is around 20 years newer than the svo. The gt handles like crap on turning compared to a vette around the same year. My point is mustangs were a one trick pony back then. Even 20 years later they still were. The new edge mach 1 was probably the first year of some ok handling. I believe it had the same brand of upgraded shocks as the svo. I like the svo...I'd take it over the fox gt. I did own a fox gt and never could get use to it being mine. The giant headlights was probably the biggest flaw to the looks in my book. I think the svo interior and wheels were nicer than gt... apples to apples 84 vs 84 year models. History can't be changed... the masses only loved the v8 mustang. I appreciate all cars and makes though. I almost bought an svo about 2 years ago. Maybe I should try again since most people don't want them... don't change my mind about the facts that are upgrades on the svo.

    Probably because they took all the good parts that they could have put on the GT, a V8, rear drive car and wasted it on a car that didn't cater to core Mustang enthusiasts. THEN, to add insult to injury, when they discontinued it, they didn't transfer all those nice goodies over to the GT. Can you imagine a GT with a turbocharger, 5 lugs and 4 wheel disc brakes? What could have been....Yeah, still haven't forgiven Ford for that one....

      Just because it isn't a v8 don't mean it isn't fast. These things had potential could easily put down 300+ to the tires with fairly simple mods or about the same as an old 302 wkth a decent heads cam and intake package. Also these were more built towards handling they had 4 wheel discs and larger wheels and they weigh less and have better weight balance so for a car built for the twisties its actually a good starting point. Not every build is built for drag racing although they can be very respectable there. Im not saying I would rather have one over a v8 mustang but I'd def like to have one in addition to some v8 mustangs if I could.

      You have so much wasted potential in it then. You can hit 250-260 on stock SVO parts without bumping injectors. And get around 300 after that. Very underrated

      @@midnight347 I know, Most of them don't know shit about it, In comparison even back then the SVO was a cheaper Choice for High HP mods, Hell now they are dirt cheap if all you want is to go fast. Love them. The v8 has a iconic sound sure. But the SVO is arguably faster stock for stock

      I answered this several days ago, but TH-cam is being weird on responding to some comments. Many think that for sure.
