As a wig-maker of over 15 years, I must admit that I would NEVER have the patience or wherewithal to do this. My wig goes off to you. The end result is so satisfying.
i was watching this and was not expecting it to be the sponser, I actually own one and can confirm it is super handy and my favourite glue gun I have owned :) I got mine from Michaels
it does not tho? if you stick on the hair first and then curl it, the hair on the inside will bunch up and look bad. that's being prevented by forming it first and then gluing it on.. easier? yes. making more sense? no.
@@MrsDeviousNinja This is one of those things like when you learn how to do a math equation and someone asks the teacher to explain it differently, with you not understanding how the 2nd way works. Just because 1 way makes more sense to you, does not mean that way makes more sense for everyone else. The other way can make more sense to someone else, and not you and that's fine.
@@MrsDeviousNinja But also ... there are ways to mitigate the amount of "bunching" you get on the inside. And ways to mash it down and smooth it after. It's 1000 times easier to do it flat and twist it. And yes, it makes WAY more sense for anyone with spatial awareness to do it flat first and figure out how to curl it effectively. This was her first attempt. No one's first attempt is perfect. Sorry for the rant, but good lord this comment pissed me off, lol. So condescending (and wrong)
I did the drill curl once for a mami tomoe cosplay in 2012. Being a poor high schooler it didn't come out great and with the drill curl tape escapade I decided to never cosplay someone with drill curls again but now this video is making me rethink it 😂
when i cosplayed mami from madoka magica many many years ago, i sculpted her drill curls by absolutely drenching long wefts in got2b glued (the styling gel, not the spray) and pinning them in place around a foam cone. when they fully dried, i then secured them with vertical lines of clear fishing line so they'd keep their shape! the process was pretty laborious, but i was really proud of how they turned out and how surprisingly sturdy they ended up being. i got loads of people asking how i did my wig. thank you sarah for always sharing your process and enriching and encouraging creativity in the cosplay community. ❤
If you ever decide to make more drill curls, maybe pick up a plastic road cone to form the curl around as it goes from quite a wide diameter to a very narrow one, but also has a very stable weighted base so you can safely leave stuff to dry on it.
Wow I don’t mess with wig making, but I’m shocked that the standard way of making that curl is to apply the hair around the spiral! Like it makes so much more sense to shape it after. Glad you could bring this innovation to the wig makers!👏 Amazing video as always 👌
I made drill curls in the og way and the issue with laying it flat first is those same relentless waves on the inside she got 😭 it’s a nightmare trying to make it look good
I always assumed that this was how people made drill curls I’m shocked to see how labor intensive the original method is in comparison. I’m so glad you were able to make this method work!
It is so fun watching other cosplayers experiment with some of the biggest headaches us wig makers go through. Plumbers strapping is a life saver! Also thank you for the pointer on the FossShape material, I have been searching for this for a long time as I make hard wig caps quite often with quilting batting.
i’m not big on glue guns or anything but hearing you talk about how cool your sponsors glue guns are suddenly i am- like IT CATCHES THE EXCESS GLUE ?? i must obtain one for my collection of things i will use like 2 times but enjoy owning very very much
Is my toxic trait watching Sarah Spaceman do all kind of cool wig things and saying, "I could totally do that!" but never actually styling any wigs ever? Maybe.
You did such a good job! I'm actually not a fan of the tulle technique, which I only started seeing recently, as far as how it looks - but for drills? It's actually a perfect match. I'm glad you were able to do this!
You know when you see something made easily for the first time after living a life thinking of just a very difficult way of doing it? This technique. This changes A LOT Holy shit!
I tried fosshape back in 2015 but troubleshooting was so hard, and I couldn't find any cosplay tutorials .But now you've given me great inspiration to try it again. This method you've created for drill curls is truly a game changer. I've wanted to cosplay Mami for years, but the wig always seemed like too much work. I'll have to give this method a try! You've also inspired me to buy a new glue gun lol
I literally just finished my Kangel (from Needy Girl Overdose) wig a few days ago using the tape and wire method and this definitely looks much cleaner and less time-consuming. Not to mention my drills are attached to the base wig using a very questionable method involving wrapping wire at the root of the drills around a headband under the wig lmao (I have a performance in two days so I'm praying they don't fall apart). The bolt method seems much more secure, so I might use that to give my wig a glow-up in the future! Thank you for sharing your wisdom with us! P.S. I've been binging your videos recently while working on my wig and I just want to say they're really motivating! ❤
I got a cordless rechargeable hit glue gun earlier this year, and it was the best craft purchase of the DECADE! I wish mine had a little cradle, and built in charger, that's so sick!
i love this video and i keep watching it over and over and over again and this looks way easier than the original method and i hope everyone does this method cause it is SO much easier.
Sarah I really appreciate your videos. I've always been interested in cosplay but never felt confident enough to do it. I've been bingeing your content and it has inspired me to buy a sewing machine and start planning my first cosplay. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and passion with the world ❤
i'm a paper wig maker so i do the og method except it's just wire to the actual paper and then i just make the paper strip however long and add supports after (i've made an entire celestia ludenberg wig with drills to my waist in under 6 hrs)
You really make me want to start getting more into cosplay! I love to cosplay at conventions but there all store bought but I do crimp my own wigs. But I want to start making my own cosplay outfits but I’m a little nervous 😓
you somehow became one of my biggest inspirations and I can't believe I only found your channel a year ago, it feels like i've known you for years. you got me back into sewing, and wanting to cosplay. hopefully I'll get the chance to meet you at some point. :3
Completely off topic, but your speaking cadence and project passion reminded me instantly of Entrapta from the new She-Ra. 10/10, love someone who cares about what they make!
The fact that there were two people at the end in the shout out to the new big supporters Patreon tier with my name (probably not spelled the same but idk because I didn’t see it but heard it) is wild to me because I don’t hear many people with my name.
I was hoping there would be a link in the description for the base wire but no such luck 😢 still very grateful for the video and the resources provided
It might be worth experimenting to see if you need the tacky glue to be wet when you form the curl or if once it's dried it just becomes one solid, flexible thing.
I’ve been looking forward to this video and I love how everything turn out! I was working on making a ren fair out fit while watching this (hand sewing bits) and several times I ended up stopping, holding a needle in an awkward position just to watch. I hope your week has gotten better
got to see you at Momo con this year so glad I got the chance, sorry I didnt say much I was really shy, just wanted to say you're the one who inspired me to start cosplaying 3 years ago c: -Ami
Thank you for making this video! I literally just made my prom version of celestia’s dress and was about to move onto the wig, which I was going to make like the video you showed, however this was relises just in time and now I can do it so much more quickly in time for my con, thank you!!

I literally got so excited when i saw you doing th exact steps i had made up in my head because that means i hd a good idea and someone else tested it before i did and it proved that it would work in my mind 😭😭😭😭
i feel like the bunching thing could be mitigated by using a thinner weft for the inside part, so that all of the fibers are touched by the glue. but this is just me backseating, if i ever become interested in a character with drills i would love to try this out!
OMG YES YOU POSTED! You're literally my inspiration for cosplay and I love following along sometimes to see if I can make something that looks at least ok compared to what you make! Thank you so much you icon! ♥

😮😮
REAL
I'm starting to question the wisdom of me and my friend attempting this (we've both been cosplaying for less than a year) I'm sure it'll be fine...
Do I cosplay? No. Do I adore Sarah’s content? Absolutely.
same!
Same!
Same, dawg

Genuinely and unironically losing my shit over how cool that glue gun is

It makes much more sense to me to apply everything flat and then bend it into shape

the dyed foam looks like the most bizarre fruit by the foot ever. right down to peeling off the "skin"
That’s it folks. She’s done it. She IS actually a Cosplay God, herself.
You’re amazing. And I never would’ve thought of this.
new wig lore dropped !!!
300 likes and no replies? Let me fix that
6:32 new forbidden food, the forbidden froot rollup!
I HAD THE SAME THOUGHT!!
Oh my god fruit roll up squad!
YUM
😂😂😂😂
It looks like a really long, really skinny used maxi pad LFMAO
I love how it bounces. Perhaps painting the bolts red would help disguise them a bit more 🤔
Both the pasta and fosshape certainly look interesting. I think cosplayers and doll customizers could bond over kinda being mad scientists.
as someone who often has to do architectural scale models for school/work, that glue gun ad has SOLD ME
Since you created a new way to do drills you can call it the spaceman drill!!!

JoAnns does sell felt by the yard. Its about $8 regular price per yard!
You can also get Flex Foam without the outside fabric piece on it as well.

Just sounds like executive dysfunction, which is hella relatable.
Cackling at the wig base looking like a smooth brain

Ohhh surebonder my beloved
That is pretty slick. I love the way you problem solve.
Might get less distortions on the inner curve of the curl if you use shorter wefts.... almost tempted to remake an old rose quartz wig to try it.
I love that when she went to the serious voice again she still said “the pasta”😂😂😂😂 6:38
This should be called "The Spaceman Method"
wow im early? dam by 1 min too thats crazey
