I’m in the UK - no access to guns here so a Jo staff used as a walking stick is the best option for me I am thinking.

I bought a long wooden dowel at Lowe’s. It is used to practice the technique. For hiking I bought a hickory stick at Brazos. It is solid! When I’m on the trail, people really notice the stick and make way for me. I’ve used it twice to protect myself twice from a dog. You have to have something to use when you’re alone.

Recently retired, doing a bunch of walking. I have a few walking sticks because I like making them. Came across your channel today. Saw a few vids and went out to Home Depot today, bought a 1” ash rake handle, cut it down to 53” and put cane tips on each end. Saving a bunch of your tutorials. Great workout so far! Thanks!!!

Thank you Matt for this video. You asked if We have made our own and yes I have. I went to a Menards which is like Lowes or Home Depot and I bought a one inch hickory or ash broom handle and sanded it down and finished it with boiled linseed oil and it took about 6 coats before it stopped absorbing it. I cut off the bottom taper of the handle leaving it around 54” and left the drilled hole in the top for maybe a looped piece of rope for a wrist hold while hiking with it. It’s awesome. I also got a 6’ ironwood sapling from my brother in law and although it was curvy I whistled it down to an inch and a quarter and finished the same way. It is heavy though so I hope to get strong enough to wield it successfully.

I have enjoyed reading Doug Boal and John Bowen's discussion. Thank you for sharing your training methods and experiences. I have only ever trained at home, first with VHS, rented from the local martial arts store (before there was the internet) and now through TH-cam. For me, Matt Pasquinilli's many videos has become my martial art system. I have learned so much from Matt and Gary Hernandez. I started a cane self-defense club called "Harbour City Gentleman's Club" here in Nanaimo British Columbia, Canada, on beautiful Vancouver Island (which is not Vancouver City). I do not charge my students but help others learn cane self-defense just for the love of it. One video that profoundly influenced me was Matt's video on being a "Master Caner", ever since I saw it, I have strived to perfect my techniques and principles. In my area and circle of influence, I am known as a Cane Self-Defense Master and my students really enjoy my teaching . . . all for free. Please keep sharing, I do benefit from hearing your stories. God bless you all.

Thanks Matt. Great video focusing on the finer details for how to get the most out of seemingly basic techniques (the kind most likely to be used in a pressure test!). While the walking stick through TSA sounds encouraging, I'd be cautious. I just browsed the US TSA site, and they don't allow bowling pins, baseball bats, cricket bats, hockey sticks, lacross sticks, hiking poles golf clubs and katana. So if people got a walking stick through, it might be more the exception than the rule and perhaps at the whim of the individual TSA agent. The unfortunate part is that if you bring it to the gate and it gets rejected, you have to leave it behind. They have nice glass display cases at some airports showing some of the things they've taken off people. So, if your $ 85 walking stick can't go on the plane, you better have someone who is not flying, and on the outside of TSA gate that you can give it to, or you just have to forefit it. (Not sure if they would let you put a tag on it and check or "gate check" it.) A family member lost a nice torque wrench that way. The TSA site did say canes were allowed, but cited another section of their site for special instructions. I was not able to find any special instructions pertaining to canes. Unfortunately, not too many checked luggage pieces are bit enough to carry a 54" stick (especially without incurring "oversize bag" fees. Keep up the great work.

I bought a nice 4.5' ( Trail Blazer Walking Stick ), at Walmart a couple months ago. Very nice length , I'm 5'7" and it's a good length for hiking and self defense, basically it's a short bo staff.
I bring it on the road with me
in my big rig ....and these techniques you are demonstrating will be good to practice with it.
Thanks Matt very interesting, inspiring and enjoyable channel you have.

I have seen cops in Salem oregon stop and take a walking stick from a very old man calling it a dangerous weapon. Their excuse was that it was thicker than a 1/4 inch. It was made of red wood. They left the man to hobble home without his stick on a bad knee. I am very interested in this art for teaching my 72 yr old dad but sometimes the criminal thugs are wearing badges.

@@pasquinilli Pre-Covid, I was told that a wooden cane or walking stick was protected under ADA, and if someone in authority made you give up your 'support' and you fell, then they were liable under Federal law. This 'bluff' may not work for all of us, but does the ADA rule apply in the case of the old man above, who had to hobble home?

I love the areas you discuss. I have made a walking stick with Shark tooth finger grooves, etc... out of a branch of White Oak. It is awesome. These techniques are nice to see demonstrated. Even. If I know the moves. Seeing it applied reminds me of moves I forgot. Also didn't consider as effective as it is. The top of the handle has a hand carved phallic , with a Camel toe just below it. Perfect for 'art' effect and holding during walking. Also getting up support.
I have a year to live. (In my sixties). I'll stop running on further. Thank or your instructions.

AS I've said before-- it's ILLEGAL in a LOT of places-- and just because you see some carry them onto the plane doesn't mean they didn't get stopped and confiscated at the next stop... Several places have said anything NOT a hooked cane is considered a WEAPON ONLY... PLUS-- the hook has several advantages over straight stick.

Outstanding and well done Matt, personally I love the Jo Staff, that is 1 of my most favorite self defense "stand off" defensive tools for the very reasons you mentioned. As a matter of fact while I was in the Middle East, someone in our group managed to bring a Moses Staff along, I'm still not sure if they made him put it into the cargo hold or let him bring it onto the plane itself, as I only saw it and learned of his experience while we were waiting for the rest of our group to catch up inside the airport. Even while I watched him walk up, I could not believe it, due to the aftermath of 9/11 and TSA regulations. Your content is rock solid, I have been in Martial Arts my entire life, I attended Basic, AIT, etc @ Benning; awww the pugil stick match memories. So after the service I got into contract work. Thanks for sharing your content and I look forward to seeing more of your videos.

Hi Matt, thank you for your instruction today. When my son and i were instructing, our martial art system or style had four levels of belt progression. Very similar to my style of many years ago; white, green, brown and black. In our present manner of instruction, the black belt level has no degrees. The amount of time of dedicating oneself, to all aspects of the art, is the determining factor of black belt seniority. There are no testings of any belt level per say, but through the student(s) dedicated training and demonstrating the mental and physical skills needed, the belt may be rewarded informally. When a student obtains the black belt level, as the belt color returns from black to white or going "full circle", is what gives the belt its "true character". We believe by following this manner of obtaining the black belt, it brings about a cohesiveness in the art and brotherhood in our students. No favorites, but brothers and sisters, in a lifelong commitment. God bless.. Doug.

What style of martial arts you teach? Sometimes I think there should be no belt system, as some think it's burdensome and have to wait years to get it. Matt said it right when he quoted from karate kid movie. Karate is in the mind and heart and not in the belt.

Hi Danny, what my son and i teach is based on one of the Korean parent style of Tae Kwon Do called Chung Do Kwan. Some translate it as Blue Wave School. But actually it is Blue Way School. In Korea before the Tae Kwon Do system was created, Chung Do Kwan was one of the nine kwons or schools being taught. It was developed in 1945 after WW2, and composed of kicking, striking, wrestling or basically "use whatever is necessary" for self protection. It was a para military self defense system, that was taught to the ROK (Republic Of Korea) troops serving in Viet Nam with the American troops. These ROK troops were known for their loyalty, fearlessness, veracity and intelligence. Feared by the communist forces, and even highly respected by our American Green Berets, they were no one to be trifled with My Korean Master was one of the chief instructors of these Korean troops. Unfortunately, Chung Do Kwan and the eight other schools combined under the umbrella of Tae Kwon Do. At this point in my life, my son and i haven't taught for several years and always on a voluntary basis. His TKD rank is 4th Dan and i am 3rd. Danny, i hope this information was of use to you. Stay safe and God bless. Doug.

Beautiful, clear, practical self defense moves. I know the Tai Chi cane form. It's pretty and a good work out, but I don't think I could persuade an attacker to stand in the right position for an application. However, after watching your 20 min. video, and a little practice, I could see convincing an attacker that I wasn't an easy target. Thanks!

Thanks for the video! I'm trying to catch up on ones that I missed.
I think that the Vietnam rifles were the M14 and the M16. Maybe they used some M1A1 rifles as well, but I'm not sure.
I have a more jo-length walking stick that I've had for a while. I wouldn't do any serious hitting with it because it's not that strong. I think it's made of sycamore. I have done a few of those drills using that stick. I was just thinking of that stick this afternoon and decided to put it in the mineral oil. I'll let it soak up oil for a few days. I generally walk with my five-foot hickory stick that I ordered from a lumber supply place. I sanded and oiled that one into a hearty walking stick. I may walk occasionally with the sycamore stick just for old time's sake.
In a real fight, I would probably use my cane long enough to draw a concealed carry pistol. If my first cane strike does the job, then I can just put the pistol back in my pocket and move on.

For a very long time I have concentrated on stick weapons . Simply because a person can walk down most any street and carry anything from a 6' Bo to a hiking stick and not be seen as a threat . Especially if one is advanced in years as I am . And have a lot less chance of being charged with a use of force charge wich is what happens if one uses a gun . Even if it is in a self defence situation . This is not to say I don't carry a concealed hand gun .

What would be the maxs lenght a cane the airport would except or for sale since the hiking pole wont be excepted in a airport, but a longer cane should . anybody know

Cane length is typically 36” but you can have a longer cane for sure. I don’t know if there is a max length. I have recently heard from several people that they have been taking their straight walking canes and hiking sticks through the airport with no problem.

That’s cool Doug! What type of wood did you use to make your staffs?

    • @dougrollings5744
      @dougrollings5744 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@pasquinilli I made them from red oak. I invented a non-traditional staff, 1 1/4 thick with 8 sides (so octagonal not round). It is 44 inches long. I call it a "Jung Jan Staff",. Jung Jan means "middle" in Korean, its length is in the middle of a Hanbo and Jo staff.

The best thing to take on a plane is a cane, is medical necessity, so they cannot refuse you. As for a walking stick it depends on the individual TSA Agent, I always carry trauma shears right on the outside of my backpack (in the mollie webbing) and only got questioned one time. When I made the remark "Wow, that big blunt plastic tip could sure do a lot of damage" it confirmed her stupidity and she said nothing more. Also, a cane being shorter is easier to manipulate in the plane.

Hey Matt watching your videos now , i walk in the morning,an afternoon on bike paths, maybe 1.7 miles each walk , seen some mean lookin faces at me from some older an young men, so good morning doesnt work ,like they hate me , for know reason ...I am carrying a thin fiberglass walking pole that people use to push themself along with long skates,or like a power walker.its to light, not like your hickory, which i need, its up to the arm pit , seems to long to carry in stores,a cain as you know is great, but it seems wierd using a cain when you walk ok, i havent order from you yet.price was scarf,i look once last week . i dont see rubber tips on the end,so without them you would sound like a horse.or they would become damage,i am 70 next month, white male,i crash my yamaha last fall bad,but i am walking kinda great, but its hard sometimes, but i cant fight more then three minutes.breathing, neck, back cant handle much over fifty pounds in short blasts if i am in trouble. i work out with bum bells, nothin over 30,another year i am hoping alot of myself .stronger like i was before crash, but thanks for your help.for real from my heart. , i will like everything from u for sure , have to try to find your staff an cains, are prices better ? fair i hope.i hope you enjoyed my story, you ask me to comment,so please to meet you,Rick from madison wisconsin.
