I am Nigerian and was in exactly that same situation, walking to my hotel in Ocho Rios, and accosted by a Jamaican guy who wanted to 'chat a while'. He thought I needed directions etc, and a spliff supply, being a 'foreigner', and he was about building one when I pulled out MY spliff, already built, and shared it with him over a chat, before walking to my hotel. Not for one second did I feel I was being 'ambushed'. Quite the opposite in fact.

I stay every year in Jamaica and have stayed 4 x in the Hostel, Jamaica is a lovely place and the people are very friendly. It is mainly a safe, apart from some parts of Kingston and Mo Bay,. Enjoy your holiday and do not worry too much!
Some parts of Kingston (and St Andrew) - The Çorporate Area and Capital city - are just as clean and beautiful as the clean and beautiful parts of Ocho Rios. AND it is much, much more developed and expansive than Ocho Rios, as one would expect of a capital city

I visited Ocho Rios 30 years ago every body wanted to sell me anything I wanted everywhere. anything you wanted legal or illegal was NO PROBLEM MAN , anytime anywhere and everything was not expensive but you do have to barter. Ocho rios was a very safe place and would like to revisit. I just loved to go to the beach in the mourning eat patties and see the coconut man and then Jet Ski for about 2 hours Just to start my day and of course I spent 1 day visiting the fields of pot. para sailing diving and great night life around the hotels

Your visiting Ocho Rios just brought me closer home although I was born in Kingston. Just the fact that both my parents are from the same Parish (St. Ann) where that to town is situated; Father: Nine Miles and Mother; Fort George respectively. It would have been entirely a different vibes if you had explored the interior of the parish or any other parishes in Jamaica; a vibes I expect that would have left you more with a deeper connection and appreciation of the hospitality given.

Kingston is a huge city so many different areas some parts look very American some parts look run down and ghetto so it all depends on where in Kingston you visited. However ocho rios is a resort city . Kingston is many different things all in one . Ocho Rios is very beautiful tranquil and laid back . You'll find them in areas that you'll never imagine in Jamaica, partying and chilling with the locals. If your walking around with your camera and Fanny pack looking like a tourist of course people will try to sell you something and that is universal, I personally would be disappointed if went a market or town centre in Africa and someone wouldn't try to finesse to buy something.

I visited that town and stayed at Rooms inn, then we went to the Mystic mountains in the cable cars , it was a nice experience.

You'll find them in areas that you'll never imagine in Jamaica, partying and chilling with the locals. That is why they have a ghetto pass to go anywhere in Jamaica, because people respect their bravery and general attitude of being curios. If your walking around with your camera and Fanny pack looking like a tourist of course people will try to sell you something and that is universal, I personally would be disappointed if went a market or town centre in Africa and someone wouldn't try to finesse to buy something.
Just a suggestion for your videos - Please volume level as best you can, your soundtrack that you play is so much higher than other things like your regular speech, I'm constantly turning it down then back up when you start to talk. It's just a little advice on adding finesse to your videos.
