Gosh, I remember way back when seed beads only came opaque and silver lined, and if you were cosmopolitan, you might run into a French milky or a three cut, but oh so seldom!!!! Isn't it wonderful what a fabulous selection we can choose from today!

I'm new here and thank-you for the opportunity to view you videos. I have learned a lot about problems that can happen when our projects are in the wrong environment. very helpful information. when selling our hard work.. And the long term effects our project will go through. I've been told to store our finished projects in zip lock bag, as this will stop or at least protect our projects. thanks again.
    Concetta.

Very informative Jill!! Thanks so much. I used to watch you when I had cable on a certain jewel school and ordered your slider bracelet kit in purple as tha ts my favorite color. I also love beaded beads. I can tell you honestly I haven't made it yet but seed beads still look great to this day. I've made a few projets from your awesome book. I stay away from non duracoat galvanized or non permafinish galvanized seed beads in the metal tones. So far no bad luck with any other seed beads lined, etc. Thanks so much again. Sincerely, Melissa

Thank you Jill for such an incredible explanation regarding the Miyuki /Toho seed bead issues. I can send new beaders to this site and they can get first hand knowledge from you!!! I am a totally Miyuki girl myself!!! Many years ago, I was doing some bezels on Rivolis, I was using Delica beads and 15/0 seeds. I could not get the beads to since up when adding the 15/0 seeds.....I asked my local bead store and she had no idea....She suggested that maybe it was the metallic on the delica beads....well, years later....No, it was not the delica beads, it was the fact that she had introduced Toho seed beads into her 100% inventory of Miyuki seed beads and was not telling her customers. Good Grief, we have come along way girlfriend!!!!

very interesting. I had that problem you were speaking of, years ago, that my beads began to become clear on my finished projects. Was so mad because no one wants to buy something that with water or sweat will fade. Thanks for the info. :)

Thanks for the heads up Jill! I personally am a total Miyuki snob so thrilled to know you got more Duracoat's in more to order:) I personally have had some czech nightmares with finishes as well (haven't used a czech other than a twin in ages). I have had size and all over not liking the feel of toho's from everything from inconsistencies in the sizes to just feeling "chunky" must be that I'm used to Miyuki's overall size and feel. Thnx again for the info!

Very interesting to hear your thoughts on the subject. I recently made a Kumihimo bracelet using a gold galvanized Toho bead purchased from Michaels - and the finish came off after just a week of wearing. Way too soon to be loosing the finish if you ask me. I decided to purchase the same Toho bead from a reputable online store, hoping that the finish doesn't ease off so quickly.

Just a thought: I have been using a lot of Toho beads lately because I have cataracts and in the smaller sizes 11/0, 15/0, they are a bit easier to see. Especially the 15/O's. so for folks that may have more difficulty seeing the Tohos might be a tad better. For me the problem goes away in the next couple of months, I get my cataract surgery! Yay! Jodi=-)

Thank you! I was so nervous cause I had gotten some Czech beads that were bright pink color so unless it was transparent, silver lined, Trans-luster or just a solid colored bead I stopped buying them. I wanted some of the other colors but was too nervous about getting them. Oh my gosh this helps! Awesome video

The one negative I've found with Myuki Duracoat beads is that there are a lot of beads in a tube which either have no hole or the whole is so small that you can't get a size 12 needle eye through it. That goes for 11/0 and 15/0. It's very frustrating if you're threading on a few beads on at a time.

My mom's chemistry prevented her from wearing digital wrist watches not just led but the no wind type. The LED digital numbers would just change out of the blue, and the ones with hands would run backward. When she could no longer find wind up watches that she liked, she started wearing pocket watches when she worked and time piece brooches or long chained pendants (so her clothing was between) when dressed up.

Thank you for sharing! I have had disappointments with the miyuki's too, but never with toho's. I am so glad that you share your knowledge with us all! Would you also do a comparison with the lined beads, please?? My experience with especially miyuki delica's is that when you go a few times through the same bead, the gold lining comes out. It really lands on your hands and workspace. I am curious to hear your opinion on this! Thank you on forehand! Love from Holland!!

I just bought Miyuki Gold lined beads and all the gold is rubbing off. I've tried latex gloves, plaster, even tissue to hold the project, and still the coating has come off. So disappointing to discover when you've done quite a bit of work. So 10yrs on Jill it's still happening.

Miyuki round galvanized seafoam DURACOAT 4217 colour comes off. ive used these beads to make a bracelet I kept taking a part because it wasn't working out. I stored the beads in a Baggie. Last night I decided to give the bracelet another try. As I'm stitching I noticed beads with the colouring off. I have purchased so many duracoats. I am scared to use them now. This gets expensive, and there is nothing to show for it. Just wanted to let people know.

I had the same problem with the same exact color bead. It was a Victorian lace beaded bracelet. Luckily even thu I knew (Btw I also store in baggies-each project gets their own bag) the problem was there it wasn't very noticeable to the customer cuz I also used a lighter seed bead color so it blended in. But thabla so much for pointing out about that color since it does come off. I have so many miyuki duracoat galvanized colors. Just this past week ordered 30 colors in toho 15/0 5 or 6 are permafinish galv(artbeads just had a 60% off sale). Anxious to see how these work. Sincerely, Melissa

If the galvanized seed beads also include the word Duracoat or PermaFinish, then they're okay. In both those cases, the term means a protective coating has been applied over the galvanized beads to protect the color.

Hi Jill, sure enjoy your channel. Is there actual metal in the permanent galvanized beads? I just don't know the process of making the beads, but I have severe metal allergies and always on the hunt for metal looking beads that won't cause an allergic reaction. Thank you so much!

Thank you for this information. I have a big jar of old gold 11/0's and the finish does rub off. Is it possible to paint the finished project with some type of flexible sealant maybe to keep that from happening? Or even paint the beads before making anything? If Toho and Miyuki cover their beads with stuff, why couldn't we, just once anyway ;)

I know this is years later but the RustOleum for metal works great on beads. I string them first and let them dry at least 24hrs before adding more coats. You have to do a lot of coats because you miss so many spots! Give yourself a week and lots of dry time!

Duracoat all the way, mainly because Miyuki wins across the board. Much Much better consistency. Pretty much no culling, for all sizes. Delicas as well.
I have a bunch of Tohos still and I only use them in bead ropes, stitches and project where gage isn't important. Tohos 15* are awful for bezels, and always seem like they are just a tiny bit to big. A millimeter here and there can throw it all off and cause puckering and rolling.

  • @AprilBird4

Anyone have any thoughts on DB430? It is just 'galvanized' (Galvanized Dark Lilac), not duracoat. I have reasons for liking to use it alot, but because it is galvanized I always wonder what it is going to look like down the road. I only bead for myself, I don't sell, but.... I'd still hate to have it complete clear in a few years. I'd love to find a really close match in the duracoat or permanent galvanized from Toho, but I haven't had any luck as of yet.

I can tell you some good threads to try that I'm sure Jill uses too. Fireline and Nanofil are very good threads- they are fishing line but are not monofilament- they are a braided thread . Toho's One G is also good and comes in many colors.
