What happens when the joy of a sing-along also brings a few tears? You get a classic Strumbellas show.
The Toronto six-piece brought its legendary live show to CBC Music Studio 211 a few weeks back, with the live debut of its just-released record, Hope. As is customary at a Strumbellas show, a sing-along ensued. But as lead singer and songwriter Simon Ward pointed out, he writes a lot of sad songs.
"We definitely wrote some downer songs for this record ... I get real lonely on the road and I write some sad songs," he said.
So, as you are having a blast and singing along, prepare yourself: a tear might just well up in your eye.
Check out these amazing First Play Live debut performances from the Strumbellas in Studio 211.

Listen to their first two albums if you want to see the real musicians at their realest- saw them in a small-town town hall bout 3 years ago- they were more raw and country back then, but I have to say that Simon's voice still carries the same authenticity

I can't even begin to explain how much this song speaks to me. I'm dealing with bi-polar and each line of this song touches on a facet of that battle. I yell the lines "Oh there's something in my mind that's killing me, there's something that this life's not giving me - would you say" it sums it all up in a nut shell. Thank you for this song!! "There's something in my mind that's killing me, there's something that this life's not giving me, would you say?" This song encompasses the feelings of depression spot on. Anyone who's a fan of The Strumbellas, I'd suggest reading the interview done with Simon Ward (lead singer) about why he took a long hiatus during the pandemic. He's not afraid to admit he's a long time sufferer of depression and even considered ending it all, especially during the pandemic. I respect the hell out of him. If you actually listen, Strumbella songs are not happy despite how they sound.

I love writing and I love that this group writes songs that mean things. This song does hit me in the feels. I'm currently writing my first book based on my life. Think this song would be my theme song if it ever becomes a movie. I was graduating high school at 16 when I found out I was pregnant. I was over four months pregnant when my fiancée died in a car accident. My mom told me I had to either get married or put the baby up for adoption. I ended up marrying someone I didn't love to keep the baby. After a bunch of unhealthy relationships and five children I found myself alone by choice in 2002. Been single since and I've been going through a bunch of soul searching . Figured I would just write it all down and realized I actually wrote well. I've never thought of myself as beautiful nor extraordinary so I think that's why I ended up making a lot of bad choices. Now I'm 46 and realize that most likely if I die now I would die alone and with a bunch of regrets. Think that's why this song hits me hard. If I die now I would die a loser so I'm finishing up college now to become an environmental biologist and I want to travel, finish my book, and live for myself once before I'm 50.

Katherine Adair . Just listening to this song & reading AND feeling your very open, honest, heartfelt comment you posted. Really quite an interesting intro to the subject of your book. I know some people who would like to read that book if you do write it, including me.
One thing you said particularly strikes me --- "I've never thought of myself as beautiful or extraordinary so I think that's why I ended up making a lot of bad choices." Some years ago, I met a woman who said the same thing. But she was the most beautiful woman I had ever seen. She had never thought of herself as attractive.
She was. I can remember to this day exactly when I first saw her --- in traffic. And, seems strange but, I turned around then to try to find her. Couldn't. But 2 years later, her best friend introduced her to me ! The same woman I had passed in traffic, same car, same "vanity" plate. Anyway, your words reminded me of her. In time, I proved to her that she was truly beautiful. That took patient Love. She had never realized how attractive she was. It was baffling to me at first. But learning of her past did shed some light on her opinion of herself. She was beautiful but she had never learned of her own beauty. Her self-esteem needed some close attention. We worked on that together, that's what it took.
Have you been making progress on your book ? Another topic which you wrote about here struck me. That was about your first pregnancy and the timing of things. Sorry for your loss in that accident. The course of our lives can turn on a dime. Though it is such a testament to your Love for your baby that you got married so you could keep your own child. THAT is being a mother ! THAT is a woman ! THAT is beautiful ! In high school, I remember a young woman whose parents gave her absolutely no choice at all when they learned of her pregnancy. She had to put her child up for adoption. I think she later had 5 more children.
Your comment really rang some bells with me. Perhaps in the months since you posted this you no longer find yourself alone. That would be almost 16 years alone now ? We can still have a whole heart, a complete heart --- while being alone.
Your book sounds genuinely very interesting. As do you, Katherine.
      .

Just saw them up at Whistler as part of the Whistler Presents Outdoor Concert Series on August 6th 2016. We were front row as most of the tourists didn't know who they were listening to. We arrived 30 min. before their performance. Their loss.
