You know how a lot of cardgame channels on this platform are crossing over now, comparing each other's games? I'm sure at some point, they'll start playing "oppression olympics" over the power creep garbage they all seem to be suffering.
Why is it that all new magic cards seem to have a full novel in their text box? What a freaking joke MTG has become. Volatile Stormdrake is a mess of a card.
@@RoninRose541Hasn't yet gotten to Endymion levels, but with the likes of stickers and "the Ring"...it's getting there. Gods help us if we ever get planeswalker or battle tokens.
This is how you can tell the design team has exhausted all of their ideas. Their strategy for new cards is to mesh a ton of previous mechanics together and call it a new card.
Because Wizards have painted themselves into a corner. Every set needs to push the power level in every way, because otherwise the cards in the set are irrelevant and won't sell. Look what happens when they try to dial down the power level. You end up with sets like Fallen Empires and Homelands, which despite being almost 20 years old (November 1994 and October 1995) are cheap as hell (€550 and €480 for a sealed booster box). Compare that to Alliances, which released just after Homelands, where a sealed booster box is €1,400. Why? Because Alliances have cards that are still staples today, while Fallen Empires and Homelands have nothing. The only cards that people want to play with are cards that are more powerful than existing cards. And there are only so many ways you can do that before you need to add text to the cards. And once you're there, you need to add more text to make newer cards more powerful. E.g. Savannah Lions are 2/1 for W. That was a great creature back in the day. Today you get a 1/2 first strike, haste, prowess for R in Monastery Swiftspear. How do you out power that? 2/2? 2/3? Double Strike instead of first strike? How do you make a card that can replace Sheoldred, the Apocalypse? It needs to be 4 mana, it needs to be better at unbalancing the game, it needs to be better at punishing your opponent for simply playing the game and needs to reward you simply for playing the game. And it needs to do it with The One Ring in the meta. Power/toughness increase doesn't matter, because Sheoldred is very rarely there to be an attacker. You could make it cheaper, either 3B or 1BB. Or you can add more text to make it better. Give it hexproof and/or first strike. Allow you to plot it for 1BB. We're in a situation where there are likely cards on the ban-list for various formats that are weaker than cards that are not on the ban-list.
The Aura is gunna get you your first Tarmagoyf for 5 mana (6 if you count the land you have to tap for the effect) which is essentially 3x the cost of the actual card. it will take several activations to actually break even mana wise. I feel like its not too over powered.
Agreed. If you have this in your opening hand, you have to tap out on turn 2 or 3, and do absolutely nothing else that turn. Then next turn (turn 3 or 4) you can start to make 1 Gofy each turn, by using 3 of your mana each turn. You've now tapped out twice to have one gofy. That doesn't sound very good (let alone broken) in 1v1 competitive. Maybe it could make good sideboard tech in grindy+slow matchups. Or maybe a couple can find a home in a Stax style deck. But specific situations like those is all I see it being potentially playable in. If even

It'll be pretty good, but I think there's far more broken stuff you can do in commander. So then it's just another one of those "don't play decks so powerful that other people aren't having fun" type of effects. After all, it's six mana for the first Tarmogoyf (not worth), nine mana for 2 Goys (meh), 12 mana for 3 Goys (reasonable) and 15 mana for 4 Goys (okay now it's starting to get good). But 15 mana and 4 turns is quite an investment. Not saying it's bad, I'm just saying there's far more broken stuff you can do. One way to answer it is to just do something better and outpower it. A Goyf per turn is good, but not unbeatable. This isn't 17 years ago, when Tarmogoyf was first released and was really good. Nowadays, big creatures with no special abilities aren't that spectacular anymore.
It's crazy they stuck with Kindred, especially since Native Americans said it was demoralizing. A single person, who is likely 5% native, changed Tribal to Kindred. Flippin' wild.
25:34 Regarding Necrodominance being legendary, it seems like a draw back for black devotion. Currently in timeless you sometimes cast multiple Necropotence just to get more devotion. Now i don't think it would be too strong for it to be non-legendary, but necropotence being non-legendary is definatly a small upside. It timeless, this is essentially your 5-8 copies of necropotence.
Per WOTC, "If multiple effects modify your hand size, apply them in timestamp order. For example, if you put Null Profusion (an enchantment that says your maximum hand size is two) onto the battlefield and then put Reliquary Tower onto the battlefield, you'll have no maximum hand size. However, if those permanents enter the battlefield in the opposite order, your maximum hand size would be two."
Call me stubborn, but I'm still calling it Tribal. Nobody was actually ever offended by the term, and trying to change it is just hollow virtue-signaling.
Only thing I can think of legendary is assuming you'll have multiple in your deck and instant speed removal will cause a skipped draw step and no payoff having multiple out would be a shield against removal on that last turn of a close game where you're going to dig for counters or removal
I'm wondering if it's to prevent getting two separate triggers. Imagine Sheoldred with 2 of these. Pay all but one life, draw that many, gain double. Then pay all but one again, draw that many, gain double again. With enough life, you can essentially pick the best 5 card in your deck and almost quadruple your life.
@@joshuahowell4785 I didn't even think about multiple instances of the effect, you're right in the case of sheoldred you could do something silly like that
Pearl-Ear is fascinating to me since it looks like the first card that deals w/ modified PERMANENTS (rather than just creatures). The best way will probably still focus around using Auras on your creatures, but I absolutely wanna make a fun build slapping Auras on lands/artifacts.
Razorfield Rhino is straight from the Mirrodin block. They had Razorfield creatures and the floor was covered in those hexagonal metal plates. It hit me right in the feels 'cause I loved that block and I was rooting for the Mirrodins who eventually got overrun and subsumed by the Phyrexians.
Thief Of Existence seems to be a play on Naturalize, but it throws in Planeswalkers too. I'm trying to think of any other Non-Land, Non-Creature permanents this will effect, but they can always put more in.
Flare of denial will be the new protection spell of choice for Thassa's Oracle. Play it then sac it to for the counter since the ability is already on the stack.
Nulldrifter's 7 manacost is what it makes it pop. Lots of Eldrazi permanents care about 7 mana cost casting. And you still do cast a 7cmc if you evoke it.
Jist to be sure: is Kindred a replacement of Tribal or a completetly new type? If I have a Tribal Sorcery and a Kindred Instant in my grave, how big is the Tarmo?
I’m somewhat confused at how to build the vampire demon. Is it angel tribal with vampire lords or just go all in vampire and ignore the angel thing altogether? Or is this just aristocrats?
Only reason I can think of for necrodominance being legendary is for cards like sisay weatherlight captain who has abilities that let you grab legendary permanents.
I’m a fan of horror. Eldlich horror as well. I’m loving the artwork for these new Eldrazi. If the commander deck wasn’t so expensive, I’d definitely buy it.
9:00 that Drak is WAY underpriced. It should cost 4 mana, UUU at least. Unrestricted creatre removal AND getting 4 energy by the cost of giving a 3/2 flyer and "1U" ? It's way too little 21:35 same, should have costed 4-5 mana, not 3 It's insane to balance "It costs a card" ... Well, EVERYTHING is a card! It's not an argument!
The token has a converted mana cost of 1G that's all it was trying to say. It is important to mention for cards that care about cmc as most tokens have a cmc 0 but tokens of actual cards like copy tokens typically have cmc equal to the original card
It is so crazy to think about now, but in the day I wanted a playset of Tarmogoyf so bad, but could never afford them, never got them. Today I just don't need them, still love the card though.
sire of famine is a demon that turns creatures into vampires whereas Aclazots is a vampire that turns vampires into demons (technically it is his preist that does that but still)
I understand that indignation sells and everyone wants to complain... But if you think the nest card is going to be broken, then you have clearly never played modern. That card ends up costing you six mana over two turns for one Goyf. It's a slower clock than literally one Murktide.
Agreed, I couldn't believe my eyes at first, but when you actually think about it the card doesn't seem to be broken. Sure, if this was released back when Tarmogoyf was dominant, this card would have been unbelievable. But there's been so much powercreep that a Goyf factory probably isn't overpowered.
Counterspells singlehandedly competing w the rest of the entirety of MTG cards with "screw casting cost" abilities. Other ignore casting cost abilities typically required a few pieces or number of counters or cards to do, or an original payment from another card.. Why are counterspells just simply free at the most minimal costs they could think of?.. I guess now they're just missing "sacrifice an artifact" to ignore costs, and we're there.
Players are going to need some Enchantment destruction. These are some pretty good cards, especially Flare of Denial. The only problem is this will be an expensive set. Thunder Junction has not been out that long and BloomBurrow will be here before you know it. Even if you want to pick up a couple of boxes from each set, it will run you a nice chunk of change. If you only buy singles, there will be too many to get. Thank you for the video Magic Historian.
@@NorthBayCryo The only potential benefit I could see over Necropotence is that it actually "draws" cards. In every other respect it's basically the same or worse. No way this is banned, let alone "pre-emptively" banned.
I guess many of the Eldrazi and 'goyf cards are from the "let's slap Commander sets onto this Modern set" side product. But still, why is Necro legendary? My best guess: To trigger cards that care about legends, either "historic" or Mox Amber style.
Yugioh players: "Oh, welcome to our 2012 power levels." I mean, for the longest time, Black Luster Soldier - Envoy of the Beginning was considered the strongest single card that could be legal. It spent 6 years at forbidden (not allowed in your deck) and was never higher than limited (could only run 1) in its lifespan from 2004 to 2017. It is now off the F/L entirely and it hasn't seen competitive play since 2015.
The Tarmagoyf cards look to be from one of the Commander decks, so that means they won't be legal in Modern. Makes sense because they wouldn't want to put Myriad on a Modern legal creature. Myriad is only useful in multiplayer formats.
Legendary means u can't have 2 out at the same time. Even if there is no benefit when having 2 vs just 1 there is still the benefit that 1 removal is needed for each copy if someone plans to blow it up. The benefit to having 2 of any card is now it is harder to remove the effect of that card. Well there is some removal that will target all cards with the same name, most removal is one target. So Letting u have 2 on the board would make me need 2 spells if I want to remove it unless I play that hard to find spell that targets both. Yet by making it Legendary we never get this benefit unless we break the Legendary rule...

“If we print enough ‘you win’ cards, people will forgive our other problems!”
Who the fuck listened to the guy saying Tarmogoyf was trash??
Necrodominance is broken with Sheldred
I’m somewhat confused at how to build the vampire demon. Is it angel tribal with vampire lords or just go all in vampire and ignore the angel thing altogether? Or is this just aristocrats?
Its for Kaalia imo, especially a deck that focuses on etbs and death triggers
@@rowankeltizar5961 thanks. The more I look at it the more I go “it’s in the 99”
17:07 you cant play that in a colorless deck
Good catch. The Evoke makes its color identity Blue.
@@RaceBandit thanks I learned a lot about color identity bc my main deck is a super powered up zhuladok precon
Will Harbinger work against Deserts?
I love me some power creep. They need a 2 green. 6/6 with haste and trample💯
Okay, I appreciate the flavour on Harbinger of the Seas - or, as it’s undoubtedly going to be called eventually, “Flood Moon” 😊.
Blue moon
@@ODIRGO No, Blue Moon is a separate card game of its own. 😉
What's up with that set symbol tho?
Wonder if you can play Necro with Library of Leng now.
I just created a new format. It's called oEDH (o for old) and it's basically EDH except that you can only play cards printed before 2024.
Only reason I can think of for necrodominance being legendary is for cards like sisay weatherlight captain who has abilities that let you grab legendary permanents.
New creature for the chair, deck!
I’m a fan of horror. Eldlich horror as well. I’m loving the artwork for these new Eldrazi. If the commander deck wasn’t so expensive, I’d definitely buy it.
Cloning my Gilded Drake is one of my fav situations in edh, the protection is fine for lil Stormdrake 👌🏾
9:00 that Drak is WAY underpriced. It should cost 4 mana, UUU at least. Unrestricted creatre removal AND getting 4 energy by the cost of giving a 3/2 flyer and "1U" ? It's way too little
21:35 same, should have costed 4-5 mana, not 3
It's insane to balance
"It costs a card" ... Well, EVERYTHING is a card! It's not an argument!
I don't like that the Tarmogoyf nest says "Its a 1G..." Like what is that, first we're just entering now this?
The token has a converted mana cost of 1G that's all it was trying to say. It is important to mention for cards that care about cmc as most tokens have a cmc 0 but tokens of actual cards like copy tokens typically have cmc equal to the original card
It is so crazy to think about now, but in the day I wanted a playset of Tarmogoyf so bad, but could never afford them, never got them. Today I just don't need them, still love the card though.
Only reason i can imagine making necro-po a legendary enchantment is for sisay players to tutor up a necro now.
11:38 Lands don't count - they are not considered to be spells.
I had to reread the card after seeing this; didn't notice the first time that Echoes refers to spells in its first effect instead of permanents.
sire of famine is a demon that turns creatures into vampires whereas Aclazots is a vampire that turns vampires into demons (technically it is his preist that does that but still)
I understand that indignation sells and everyone wants to complain...
@@lightworker2956 yeah, just way too slow. Could be an application somewhere, but unless someone can break it, it's pretty mid if used in a fair way
Echoes of eternity is either the rabbit from polymorph or the pink morophon
one of the commander decks is Lhurgoyf based
Stormdrake blink with aetherworks marvel? Seems kinda bonkers
Plagiarize wouldn't do anything about Necrodominance, because the amount of life is chosen when the ability resolves, not when it is put on the stack.
25:25 it's because of Gary
"If" is not the start of a triggered ability
That Aura card could be good when making alot of Blood forges axes
i'm so damn hyped for the Eldrazi
Is it just me or does it feel like harbinger of the seas and Tisha as tide binder artwork should have been switched
Blue did unironically need more cheap counterspells. They could have 200+ free counters, it's their only way to interact
I could see a pre-emptive ban on Necrodominance in commander
Is it stronger than Necropotence?
@@enricomassignani Nope it's not.
@@enricomassignani Subjectivly it could be, i guess it would depend on the build.
@@NorthBayCryo The only potential benefit I could see over Necropotence is that it actually "draws" cards. In every other respect it's basically the same or worse. No way this is banned, let alone "pre-emptively" banned.
that is counter spell for one blue, because u know people will only play that in decks that play 1/1 for 1 blue
Alwats funny seeing how we live in a world were 5 mana 6/6 fliers with a wall of text are mid low power bulk
Doom Whisperer has been around since late 2018
We need some flavour text from Hans on those lhurgoyf cards.
6th color … when’d you add that?!?!?!
I noticed it several videos ago... might've been there the whole time I've been subscribed, actually. I didn't really commit it to memory.
I'll bet the first one is called "Trigoyf".
I guess tribal card types were a triggering ability
Lmao
Hasbro is getting weird
The red force of will art is the best card art in all of magic. A blue mage that knows he must master his body, not only his mind
Which card are you talking about?
Where’s the new slivers wizards!!!!???
So what your saying is the nest with earthcraft I can get infinite amount of creatures that are big boys gotcha
Finally a kitsune that doesn't suck. Also, bringing Necro back. I feel like an ill-fated bowl of petunias. "Oh, no. Not again..."
