Quick correction: Turkey is not an Arab state so the word “other” when you’re saying “Other Arab states” is very misleading. Thanks for the detailed video, learned a lot.
Also, in 2009, it was found that in the original winner of the national final had already released the song for a television show, if I recall correctly. Then they gave Magányos czónak the opportunity to be the entry, and then to Dance With Me.
Thank you, great video! I just got reminded of many songs from the past. About North Macedonia 2013 ("Imperija")… Saying it was about "poor internet reception" isn't wrong, but the reasons for that poor reception lie in it's lyrics (and especially video) implying that Alexander the Great was their own leader. To avoid conflict with Greece, they were strongly suggested to change the song. "Pred da se razdeni" was performed instead.
Things I noticed in this video that I liked: Very informative and is now my favourite Eurovision video out there. Didn’t know that many songs were axed and so often: Georgia 🇬🇪 2009 , Ukraine 🇺🇦 2019 and Lebanon 🇱🇧 2005 Things I didn’t notice: “ J’donne ma langue au chat... Répondez * screams * “ 🇨🇭 “ Uni uni verso oh oh oh * silence * “ 🇪🇸 “ dOnT BReaK MeEEeEeEeeEeEE “ 🇦🇺 “ MeDO De SeNTiiiiiiiiiiiiir “ 🇵🇹 “ IF WE WERE DEEP SEA DIVEEEEEERRRRSSSS “ 🇬🇧
Romania could've done really well in 2016. Wonder whose spot they would've taken in the final, since all the songs that made it from the second semi (which Romania would've competed in) were actually really good.
I remember 1979 as a turk. Unfortunately they had i guess some type of political power against us that i dont really know because i was not born. But its not "other arabic countries", its "arabic countries". Because turks are not arabic.
Very interesting video!I didn't know that Greece didn't go to ESC three times! For various reasons. And particularly, the two first songs were completely unknown to me!!!
What about "Čija si" by Tose Proeski (Serbia & Montenegro 2003) and other songs that were due to represent in the Eurovision Song Contest 2003 but the EBU stated that too many new countries wanted to enter in that year and so some would be forced to withdraw?
Wow, amazing job on that video! It was so interesting to see all the songs :D Also a little note: Before Kátya in 2009, Hungary selected Márk Zentai, but his song was released in Sweden before. Also in Ukraine in 2010 before Alyosha there was that bald guy selected, but I don't remember his name now :D
I believe the Ukrainian bald guy was called Vasyl Lazarovych. I remember he got selected internally and his song "I Love You" won a one man NF before being rejected by NTU and invited to a new National Final where Alyosha won with "To Be Free". Three was the magic number and "Sweet People" proved to be the right song for Ukraine tho.
You forgot the Liechtensteiner attempt in 2011 as well. They got rejected for the same reasons you have mentioned with the Liechtensteiner entry in your video.
Also there is one interesting issue with Requiem by Alma, it was not the original 'Requiem' that we saw in Kiev, because it was supposed that the original Requiem was already heard before dead line so they decided to make the 'Requiem - Eurovision Version'
Maruv is a LEGend (pun intended)... saw her live, talked to her on her instagram live and she is just an amazing and lovely person! She will be on wiwibloggs concert on 13th of may so tune in!!!
I'm surprised there are so many entries that were released too early, especially like 2 years earlier. The rules are simple and clear so I don't know what were they thinking, trying to participate with these songs. Did they think that nobody will check when the song was first released?
It's not really Israel's fault that Lebanon doesn't want to show their entry. Lebanon didn't want to play by the rules. Heck, when Qatar briefly showed interest in competing, they said they'd be willing to broadcast the Israeli entry if it meant they got to compete (of course, it never got off the ground because Qatar isn't in the EBU, plus the World Cup is giving them all the exposure Eurovision might've at the time).
As far as I remember, North Macedonia wanted to debut in 1995 with Karolina Gočeva (MK 2002 + 2007) and the song "Me Sakas", but North Macedonia wasn't able to finance her. Additionally, she was just 15 years old, so she probably wasn't allowed to take part in the contest.
Some things: Italy 1967 has a way more complicated story behind its selection, I will post it someday with more time than I have now. Macedonia 2013: I remember there was literally an enormous fuss because in the video Alexander the Great statue was featured, in the first 20 seconds I think. And Imperija was way better than Pred da se razdeni.
Would the non-qualifying contestants in 96 also not be counted as entries that never got to perform on the Eurovision stage? They were DQ'ed by juries before the show.
OMG!! When I discovered this some years ago and heard the songs, I was so mad at the juries, Germany and Romania were amazing. Germany could have reached a top5 result.
Cyprus' withdrawal in 1988 wasn't because of that release (wouldn't it disqualify all the other songs too?). It was because the song was previously entered in the Cypriot selection in 1984, which they weren't aware of when it was selected, so it wasn't eligible and they had to withdraw.
I heard on time, in 2009, Kátya Tompos couldn't participate, because she was pregnant, not because of acting or anything, but I can't find now that info. Also she was a second choose, as the first one's song was made by a swede 4-5 years before :D
in 1968, the original performer for the song la la la (spain) was going to be joan manuel serrat. he wanted to sing in Catalan, but the nationalist regime of franco didn't allow that, so instead they selected massiel. she had to learn the lyrics, sing it in various languages and promote the song across europe in two weeks, but we actually won the contest
Some are really mistaken - as an Israeli i can tell you that "Balalika" was never selected to Eurovision 1984 it was supposed to take place in the preselection - which didn't take part after all - so we dont know if this song would have won the preselection or not to get to the Eurovision stage (and you wrote Israel 1985 not 1984)
North Macedonia didn't change their song due to the poor internet reaction but to the reaction of Greece. The title of the song 'Imperija' was meant to symbolise the Macedonian empire (plus we can see images of Alexander the Great in the videoclip). So EBU forced them to change the song due to political reference and propaganda.
I would add the songs that couldn't enter because of some Pre Qualification Rounds. 1993 had a few songs missing their debut and if I am right Romania and Hungary was turned down for the 1996 contest too
Very good video. Three years ago, there was a similar video on TH-cam about this topic, but later on, it was shut down from YT. Then I've made a Word-List with all the entries that were refused from the contest. If you have any plans in the future to update the video, then I've got the following entries for you: Spain 1965: „Nubes de colores“ by José Guardiola - refused after the TVE realized that there was a vote counting error at the pre-selection. Finland 1965: „Iltaisin“ by Lasse Mårtenson und Kari Tuomisaari - refused for unknown reasons although it won the pre-selection by a decision of YLE. Portugal 1970: „Onde vais rio que eu canto“ by Sérgio Borges - refused because RTP wasn't interested in a participation in 1970 at a later date. France 1975: „Comme un boomerang“ by Dani (in 1974, she wanted to participate with "La vie a 25 ans") - refused after TF1 wasn't confident with the lyrics of Serge Gainsbourg. Malta 1990: „Our Little World of Yesterday“ by Maryrose Mallia & Renato - was selected by PBS but Malta didn't got a spot in the line-up for 1990. Norway 1991: „Et liv“ by Heidi Halvorsen - Was selected as the winner of Melodi Grand Prix 1991 which wasn't organized by NRK which choose a internal selection because of the lack of qualitiy of the entries that were submitted to MGP in that year. The 4 eliminated entries from Kvalifikacija za Millstreet 1993 which aren't counted as real entries. North Macedonia 1995: „Ne me dopiraj“ by Maja Odžaklievska North Macedonia 1995: „Me sakas“ by Karolina Gočeva - both of North Macedonia 1995 were rejected by the EBU, because North Macedonia forgot to sign in the participation list. Estonia 1995: „Vari ja roos“ by Evelin Samuel - Estonia was relegated in 1995 due to the bad result in 1994. The Netherlands 1995: „Bij alles wat ik doe“ by Wia Buze - The Netherlands were relegated in 1995 due to the bad result in 1994. Russia 1995: „Karnaval“ by Philipp Kirkorow - Kirkorow changed it's mind and did choose another song. The 7 eleminated entries from the audio pre-selection in 1996 which aren't counted as real entries. Greece 1997: „An den agapissis den th’agapithis“ by Dimosthenis Stringlis - Wanted to sing his own song but was rejected by ERT. So, he withdrew this song. Serbia & Montenegro 1997: „Rastanak“ by Maja Odžaklievska - Serbia & Montenegro were banned from the contest until 2002. Italy 1998: „Senza te o con te“ by Annalisa Minetti - Italy was on the participation list for 1998 but withdrew later. Russia 1998: „Solntse moyo“ by Tatyana Ovsienko - Russia was relegated in 1998 due to the bad results in the years before. Hungary 1998: „Csak neked!“ by Erika Zoltán - Song was already released in 1991. Portugal 2000: „Sonhos Mágicos“ by Liana - Portugal was relegated in 2000 due to the bad results in the years before. North Macedonia 2001: „Nostalgija“ by Andrijana Janevska - North Macedonia was relegated in 2001 due to the bad results in the years before. Albania 2003: „Brënda vehtes më merr“ by Mira Konçi - Albania planed it's debut in 2004 but was later rejected by the EBU. Hungary 2009: „How We Party“ by Márk Zentai - Was choosen before Katya Tompos, but the song was already released 2004 in Sweden. Ukraine 2010: „I Love You“ by Vasyl Lazarovich - Was originally selected internally, but after a mind-change of UA: PBC, this song had to compete in a selection with more artists, but ended up 7th. Italy 2016: „Un giorno mi dirai“ by Stadio - Stadio refused the opportunity to represent Italy as the winner of the Festival di San Remo. Malta 2016: „Chameleon (Invinicible)“ by Ira Losco - Ira Losco refused the song after she won the national selection in Malta. At least, the song at "Boys and Girls" (Belarus 2005) isn't the right song (it was the real entry "Love me Tonight" instead). And gotta say I love Belarus 2011 and 2012 both the real and the original entries.
Great video, great idea and the ending was just perfect!
1997 Greece, the 1st song selected by the jury was 'An den agapiseis' performed by Dimosthenis.
7:13 The combination of my favorite part of the instrumental and the text under made me cry...
There are Errors with the video with dates so I hope y’all don’t mind that :/ and Belarus 2005 the song that was shown was NOT “Boys and Girls” it was the actual Eurovision Entry from Belarus 2005. I may have left some entries out bc I couldn’t find the artist or song. Hope y’all understand :)
You forgot Italy 2016, but it doesn't matter. Good video tho!
@@escden The winner of Sanremo isn't necessarily the artist or song that would go to Eurovision for Italy.
@@nielsreviewsmusic3055 damn you're right. The funny thing is that I'm Italian and I don't watch Sanremo😅😂
I'm pretty sure Israel withdrew in 1984 not 1985.
And you misspelled "Entire". Hahahaha
Quick correction: Turkey is not an Arab state so the word “other” when you’re saying “Other Arab states” is very misleading. Thanks for the detailed video, learned a lot.
Im always confused with that side of world..everyone look same and speak same but dont like each others 😅
@@pl2305 I don't think Turkish people look the same with most Arabs as they have a lot more darker skin compared to Turkish.
@@pl2305 Speak same? lol
@@pl2305 Turkish and arabic languages are totally different. And we dont look like arabs.
@@pl2305 just listen a Turkish entry in Turkish language and sure it sounds overly different from Arabic.
Good Video! I miss Malta 2016: Ira Losco got qualified with „Chameleon“ and changed it later 😊
Never heard France 2004 & Lebanon 2005 but they are amazing 😍😍
Things I noticed in this video that I liked:
Very informative and is now my favourite Eurovision video out there. Didn’t know that many songs were axed and so often:
Georgia 🇬🇪 2009 , Ukraine 🇺🇦 2019 and Lebanon 🇱🇧 2005
Things I didn’t notice:
“ J’donne ma langue au chat... Répondez * screams * “ 🇨🇭
“ Uni uni verso oh oh oh * silence * “ 🇪🇸
“ dOnT BReaK MeEEeEeEeeEeEE “ 🇦🇺
“ MeDO De SeNTiiiiiiiiiiiiir “ 🇵🇹
“ IF WE WERE DEEP SEA DIVEEEEEERRRRSSSS “ 🇬🇧
Insert Name Here thank you sm
De rien 😇
Lebanon 2005 is awesome
Belarus 2010 and Bulgaria 2013 were my favorites from this video and I think would've done amazing in the contest
It was fixed in my updated video th-cam.com/video/QUlOzmQzkEs/w-d-xo.html
Can’t believe the original song for North Macedonia 2013 was actually great
Very interesting video!I didn't know that Greece didn't go to ESC three times! For various reasons.
And particularly, the two first songs were completely unknown to me!!!
You forgot Croatia's 1992 song which won the national final but Croatia didn't join EBU on time for the contest. Magazin - Aleluja
It was so interesting to see all the songs :D
Also a little note: Before Kátya in 2009, Hungary selected Márk Zentai, but his song was released in Sweden before.
Србија I know, I didn’t add that here bc they didn’t have an entry but I did have them in my other video th-cam.com/video/fSIAYk-6P8M/w-d-xo.html
Peopipeo They had an entry, it has even a video here on TH-cam^^
Ira Losco (Malta) had won the national final in 2016 with a song called Casanova but changed it to Walk on Water.
It was Chameleon, not Casanova.
3:19 i thought it was fai rumore lol
What about the 1996 entries from Germany, Denmark, Hungary, Israel, Russia, and Romania that ended up not being in the contest?
To be fair, they did participate, even if in a preliminary competition. Same with some countries in 1993.
But they still are not counted as their entries. There is no data about these entries even on the official site.
I'm surprised there are so many entries that were released too early, especially like 2 years earlier. The rules are simple and clear so I don't know what were they thinking, trying to participate with these songs. Did they think that nobody will check when the song was first released?
7:00 Yulia Samoylova was banned in 2017, not 2018!
its sad that lebanon didnt want to participate cup its probably a really good song
dutch vision They really wanted to join but the problem was Israel!
@@nikolaspapapaschos ye ik the problem is always israel
I can only think of one that isn’t caused by Israel
Kosovo wants to join but they would 100% lose the Serbs if that happened
@@saxx9088 oh woow
It's not really Israel's fault that Lebanon doesn't want to show their entry. Lebanon didn't want to play by the rules. Heck, when Qatar briefly showed interest in competing, they said they'd be willing to broadcast the Israeli entry if it meant they got to compete (of course, it never got off the ground because Qatar isn't in the EBU, plus the World Cup is giving them all the exposure Eurovision might've at the time).
You forget Malta in 2016 😊
The initial entry was Chameleon and Ira Losco has changed it
As far as I remember, North Macedonia wanted to debut in 1995 with Karolina Gočeva (MK 2002 + 2007) and the song "Me Sakas", but North Macedonia wasn't able to finance her. Additionally, she was just 15 years old, so she probably wasn't allowed to take part in the contest.
4:42 Maganyos Csonak is the saddest for me, beautiful song
Lebanon and maruvs one are my favorites
Some things:
Italy 1967 has a way more complicated story behind its selection, I will post it someday with more time than I have now.
Macedonia 2013: I remember there was literally an enormous fuss because in the video Alexander the Great statue was featured, in the first 20 seconds I think. And Imperija was way better than Pred da se razdeni.
Are you going to send it?
Would the non-qualifying contestants in 96 also not be counted as entries that never got to perform on the Eurovision stage? They were DQ'ed by juries before the show.
Patrick Jepsen I choose not to include them bc it was a element of the contest that year and was considered the a semifinal so I left them all out 🥺
@@peopipeo Fair :) Reasonable
OMG!! When I discovered this some years ago and heard the songs, I was so mad at the juries, Germany and Romania were amazing. Germany could have reached a top5 result.
5:13 - This is so much better than their actual entry that year
Very interesting video 👍👍👍
You can watch the updated version here th-cam.com/video/QUlOzmQzkEs/w-d-xo.html :)
diell by Elhaida Dani was a banger ✨
Could not stop the tears when at the whole contest.......
Cyprus' withdrawal in 1988 wasn't because of that release (wouldn't it disqualify all the other songs too?). It was because the song was previously entered in the Cypriot selection in 1984, which they weren't aware of when it was selected, so it wasn't eligible and they had to withdraw.
Poor Enzo Guzman
He couldn’t participate 2 times
It was very sad to not see an ESC 2020. I wonder which country that would have won.
Muy buen trabajo 👏🏻👏🏻
Felicidades desde México 🇲🇽
I heard on time, in 2009, Kátya Tompos couldn't participate, because she was pregnant, not because of acting or anything, but I can't find now that info. Also she was a second choose, as the first one's song was made by a swede 4-5 years before :D
When you will making updated video, don't forgot about Malta in 1990 and 2016
Just uploaded my updated video, Check it out : )!
@@peopipeo l saw, amazing!
There's also a video of Pizmon Chozer performed at the Israeli Song Festival on TH-cam
Great video!
2:57 Wasn't this song released in 1984 and that's why withdrew?
Ukraine 2010: Vazyl Lazarovich - I Love You
Malta 2016: Ira Losco - Chamelon
Also Juan Manuel Sherat's La La La sung In Catalan (1968)
in 1968, the original performer for the song la la la (spain) was going to be joan manuel serrat. he wanted to sing in Catalan, but the nationalist regime of franco didn't allow that, so instead they selected massiel. she had to learn the lyrics, sing it in various languages and promote the song across europe in two weeks, but we actually won the contest
Updated: 🇧🇾Belarus 2021: "I'll teach you" by Galasy ZMesta is rejected by EBU!!!
Cant wait to update this video 🥳
One song is missing. Vasyl Lazarovych was supposed to represent Ukraine in 2010 with "I Love You", but a new national final was held later.
And now, all of this year's entries
I would add the songs that couldn't enter because of some Pre Qualification Rounds. 1993 had a few songs missing their debut and if I am right Romania and Hungary was turned down for the 1996 contest too
There were some more in 1996.
Germany,
Denmark,
Israel,
Macedonia,
and Russia missed out as well.
Very good video. Three years ago, there was a similar video on TH-cam about this topic, but later on, it was shut down from YT. Then I've made a Word-List with all the entries that were refused from the contest. If you have any plans in the future to update the video, then I've got the following entries for you:
Spain 1965: „Nubes de colores“
by José Guardiola - refused after the TVE realized that there was a vote counting error at the pre-selection.
Finland 1965: „Iltaisin“ by Lasse Mårtenson und Kari Tuomisaari - refused for unknown reasons although it won the pre-selection by a decision of YLE.
Portugal 1970: „Onde vais rio que eu canto“
by Sérgio Borges - refused because RTP wasn't interested in a participation in 1970 at a later date.
France
1975: „Comme un boomerang“ by Dani (in 1974, she wanted to participate with "La vie a 25 ans") - refused after TF1 wasn't confident with the lyrics of Serge Gainsbourg.
Malta 1990: „Our Little World of Yesterday“
by Maryrose Mallia & Renato - was selected by PBS but Malta didn't got a spot in the line-up for 1990.
Norway 1991: „Et liv“
by Heidi Halvorsen - Was selected as the winner of Melodi Grand Prix 1991 which wasn't organized by NRK which choose a internal selection because of the lack of qualitiy of the entries that were submitted to MGP in that year.
The 4 eliminated entries from Kvalifikacija za Millstreet 1993 which aren't counted as real entries.
North Macedonia 1995: „Ne me dopiraj“
by Maja Odžaklievska
North Macedonia 1995: „Me sakas“
by Karolina Gočeva - both of North Macedonia 1995 were rejected by the EBU, because North Macedonia forgot to sign in the participation list.
Estonia 1995: „Vari ja roos“ by Evelin Samuel - Estonia was relegated in 1995 due to the bad result in 1994.
The Netherlands 1995:
„Bij alles wat ik doe“ by Wia Buze - The Netherlands were relegated in 1995 due to the bad result in 1994.
Russia 1995: „Karnaval“
by Philipp Kirkorow - Kirkorow changed it's mind and did choose another song.
The 7 eleminated entries from the audio pre-selection in 1996 which aren't counted as real entries.
Greece 1997: „An den agapissis den th’agapithis“
by Dimosthenis Stringlis - Wanted to sing his own song but was rejected by ERT. So, he withdrew this song.
Serbia & Montenegro 1997: „Rastanak“
by Maja Odžaklievska - Serbia & Montenegro were banned from the contest until 2002.
Italy 1998: „Senza te o con te“
by Annalisa Minetti - Italy was on the participation list for 1998 but withdrew later.
Russia 1998: „Solntse moyo“
by Tatyana Ovsienko - Russia was relegated in 1998 due to the bad results in the years before.
Hungary 1998: „Csak neked!“
by Erika Zoltán - Song was already released in 1991.
Portugal 2000: „Sonhos Mágicos“
by Liana - Portugal was relegated in 2000 due to the bad results in the years before.
North Macedonia 2001: „Nostalgija“
by Andrijana Janevska - North Macedonia was relegated in 2001 due to the bad results in the years before.
Albania 2003: „Brënda vehtes më merr“
by Mira Konçi - Albania planed it's debut in 2004 but was later rejected by the EBU.
Hungary 2009: „How We Party“
by Márk Zentai - Was choosen before Katya Tompos, but the song was already released 2004 in Sweden.
Ukraine 2010: „I Love You“
by Vasyl Lazarovich - Was originally selected internally, but after a mind-change of UA: PBC, this song had to compete in a selection with more artists, but ended up 7th.
Italy 2016: „Un giorno mi dirai“
by Stadio - Stadio refused the opportunity to represent Italy as the winner of the Festival di San Remo.
Malta 2016: „Chameleon (Invinicible)“
by Ira Losco - Ira Losco refused the song after she won the national selection in Malta.
At least, the song at "Boys and Girls" (Belarus 2005) isn't the right song (it was the real entry "Love me Tonight" instead).
I have to admit that for some entries, it's hard to research the facts, but I read a lot of german online-articles in which these entries were mentioned.
Whoa Malta 1974! Was that the version that would have competed?! That would have given ABBA a run for their money :O
What about Ira Losco - Chameleon (Malta 2016) ??
Okay, the end was very sad 😭
2018 Russia should say 2017. She was allowed to perform in Portugal in 2018 with a new song but not 2017 in Ukraine
There is also Malta’s Chameleon by Ira Losco
Reminds me how much I love Flame is Burning from Yulia.. Her entry the following year is just mehh
I personally loved both songs sm
For me flame is burning is meh but I can’t stand I won’t break
She obviously was struggling the staging was awful and the whole thing was just a mess
So many good songs this year! SO MANY! So many more than previous years. They'll all have to have new songs for next year. q__q
Now this should be interesting! 1996 will feature prominently thanks to that stupid pre qualification round
I excluded the eliminated songs from 1996’s Pre qualification round bc it was a part of the contest. But All other entries are in here :)
True I guess they technically were part of 1996 :)
It was basically a prototype of the semi-final system that we have
