Thanks for this great video! The way I see it, every place has its pros and cons. Some say the Salton Sea is the last place they'd want to live, for others the last place they'd want to live is any city in the world, where people are murdered and exposed to all kinds of toxins. We're all gonna die of something, might as well enjoy the ride on the way. I suspect the toxic dust problem cannot be ignored as it will start to affect the entire SoCal area and then something will HAVE TO be done about it.
I feel for all the children and seniors with respiratory issues.I wonder if there is some kind of filtration system they could fit into their homes?
If the Lithium prospects come true, then hopefully that will provide the California government enough revenue to give to Mexico for the "Sea to Sea" canal from the Sea of Cortez. The Sea to Sea canal makes so much sense as it is all down hill and it would provide more economy for the Mexican side with the canal creating resort towns etc.. The dust problem would be mitigated. Win-Win 🤞😀🤞

The current ideas to fixing the Salton Sea are "cart before the horse" type solutions. The Salton Sea exists because of salty waste water flow from local farms. Until a guaranteed flow is established, it is a waste of time and money to fix the Salton Sea.

One overlooked solution is pump storage between the Salton Sea and Pacific Ocean in California. Pump water out of the Salton Sea at night using geothermal energy and produce hydroelectric power during the day by adding Pacific ocean water to the Salton Sea. The surface area of the Salton sea is 343 square miles. There is a 225 feet of elevation difference between the Salton Sea and Pacific Ocean. They have already bored a hole in the mountain between the imperial valley and San Diego to transport fresh water. They could drill another one for this battery storage idea. Another advantage is you effectively reduce the high salinity of the Salton Sea while improving air quality of the imperial valley by covering the entire dry lake bed.

Our first attempt to sail the entire perimeter of the Sea's shoreline on our 15 foot Seaspray Catamans during the late '70's left 2 boats of our completely destroyed when a Berrago storm swept down the length of the Sea with 15 foot waves and deposied in peices at the south shore levees and the fields beyond.
I managed to save my boat by crashing it high speed over cattails and tullee weeds , finally wading it across the New River- essentually raw sewerage and industrial waste flowing into the Salton Sea from Mexically.
A year or two later our second attempt was successful, however the yellow hulls of one catamaran were permanantly staintied brown. Obviosely there is much more to this story than can be shared here- earthquakes, being fired upon, dismasting and a man rescued beying overboards, air and sea searches, stearn lectures by authorities. Stuff like that, but it's too late for the whole story. There was a photograph and short foot in the local paper at the time. Anyways, it's all true, and I'm likely the last survivor since I was in my late 'teens and my buddies were retired, or nearly so.

I think the Salton Sea was caused by a man made error while constructing an irrigation canal for the crops in the Imperial Valley. I don’t know how you can reduce the level of salt in the water. Millions of years ago that whole area was ocean. Isn’t that where the salt in the water came from? The Shore is lined with dead fish that can’t survive in such a salty environment. I think any plan to restore this “Sea” is a waste of money and time!
