Lyrics:
Go 'way from my window
Leave at your own chosen speed
I'm not the one you want, babe
I'm not the one you need
You say you're lookin' for someone
Never weak but always strong
To protect you an' defend you
Whether you are right or wrong
Someone to open each and every door
But it ain't me, babe
No, no, no, it ain't me, babe
It ain't me you're lookin' for, babe
Go lightly from the ledge, babe
Go lightly on the ground
I'm not the one you want, babe
I will only let you down
You say you're lookin' for someone
Who will promise never to part
Someone to close his eyes for you
Someone to close his heart
Someone who will die for you an' more
But it ain't me, babe
No, no, no, it ain't me, babe
It ain't me you're lookin' for, babe
Go melt back into the night, babe
Everything inside is made of stone
There's nothing in here moving
An' anyway I'm not alone
You say you're looking for someone
Who'll pick you up each time you fall
To gather flowers constantly
An' to come each time you call
A lover for your life an' nothing more
But it ain't me, babe
No, no, no, it ain't me, babe
It ain't me you're lookin' for, babe

When you been through some kind of pain, Bob Dylan has a song to get you to cope
Behind every beautiful thing there's been some kind of pain.
Just like Joni 💕
There's this song, "Don't Think Twice (It's Alright),Positively 4th Street... Then there's the painful starvation song, "The Ballad Of Hollis Brown"...Whenever that song played more than once when we were broke, it's time to run away for a few hours. My Dad felt so awful about us going hungry so often that I know for a fact that he had to fight the urge to grab the Barretta 9mm and solve that problem right quick.I've been into Bob Dylan since before I was even into Rozz Williams; and I was 4 when I discovered Christian Death/Shadow Project... His voice and the ingenius lyrical content just literally had me from day one.
Oh yeah... and "Sarah". Every single time I hear that song, I'm sorry, I'm not an advocate of violence, but when he says "Please forgive me, my unworthiness" I want to beat the ever living hell outta Sarah Dylan.
I know that this song doesn't fit the particular topic we're on, but Desolation Row is just... it's just me.
Dude... I could go on for days about the awesomeness that is Bob Dylan. Thank you for acknowledging his greatness.
Oh yeah... "Hurricane".Fucking amazing.
John Prine as well.
Yup. 😢❤
Dylan is otherworldly.
Once you go Bob you never go back

'And anyway, I'm not alone'...
Hahahaha. My favourite part of the song
"Go lightly from the ledge, babe
Go lightly on the ground"
Yes.
Great greatest gift to the broken heart and the sad guys.... gives a great sense of positive emotion vibes.
How can one person write so many great songs this man is a genius with endless talent
dylan
Grant Cameron knows.
Came at a cost
He says these songs just come to him. I forget on of his best took 2 minutes to write.
Because he is Robert Zimmerman
Beatles: "She loves you YEAH, YEAH YEAH!
Dylan: "NO, NO, NO it ain't me!
Lol
Hahaha
Well if you want an example of dylan doing beatles in his own contrary style...fourth time around the live version ... its his twist on norwegian wood same but different.....and lol btw...funny comment
Dylan knows how the real world is...
Beatles : "you've got to hide your love away"
Dylan : "I want you "
"Go melt back into the night. Everything inside is made of stone" Ice cold, man.
He is the master of words. The best master ever
And anyway, I ´m not alone.

Thanks Arwen, Great job, especially helpful for those with another first language. It is such a wonderful song, more true today than ever before,
That is why Hendrix had a poster of Dylan on his wall...
When Jimi met Bob, Bob had just heard Jimi's cover of All along The Watchtower. Bob told him, "Why didn't you take all of them, I wrote them for you". Pretty moving stuff...
Hard to believe.
Privileged to see Jimi Hendrix Experience live at the ABC cinema (onstage) in Aldershot - 1966 - me and my mate (both 16) George Sugden (we saved up our wages from British Boy Service - The Junior Parachute Company). A delight to see Jimi play the guitar with his teeth.
@Frank Robinson Yeah they were, your completly correct.
He used it as a dartboard!!
My grandma knew Bob Dylan music , so did my father who introduced me to his music, i guess i have to pass that to my kids someday 💯
It’s a family legacy! 😂👍
the sooner the better before the icky pop world gets a hold of them.

This is my favorite “I’m not perfect” song, now all you see is everyone having social media trying to portray the perfect self, ughhh it hurts that I somehow feel like an oddball from that, I wish we could all just show all our flaws and just be able to accept them.
hippiecheezburger yeah. Social media is its own vain drug Once you quit it you see how ridiculous it is.
Well put,I'm with you. The more we can comfortably show our flaws, the faster we can all improve at something.
Yep, one too many goddesses and princesses for comfort.
I accept your flaws brother and more importantly God does too. Sorry just had to throw that out there.

The first song that attracted me to dylan, on greatest hits vol 1,
I never looked back
He definitely touches your heart and soul
Hell yeah!
Unforgettable my beloved brother playing his guitar and singing Dylan's ballads in our kitchen. I was a child and now he's gone.
Sure, are you coming to Florence this summer? Roberto and I saw you in Florence- I think it was 2002.
Thanks again. Your answer confirmed that good heart you have, as I had guessed also by reading your Chronicles. You are great.❤

I suppose music gets regarded as subjective. But at times that is unfair. A good song is just a poem set to music... and this is, comfortably, one of the greatest songs of all time. Dark, perhaps even brutal at times... but, brilliant. I mean, give it ten listens. It deserves a hundred. He's a genius.
yes, yes and yes again, genius beyond belief
Beautifully written
No one else's voice can express such bitterness and tenderness in one song. Absolutely astonishing.
This is stil getting people thru breaks ups in 2021. Thats art!!
It's not a really "breakup" song... it's more of a "let's not get together" song
@@bokehintheussr5033 its a "its not you thats the problem, its me" kinda song.
and also in December 2022
It's not a relationship song....
My biggest crush in college wrote me this song after he was chasing me and then went cold. Later on, I found out it was because his ex GF did something terrible which broke him into tears every night but he didn't see himself worth it of anyone anymore. I truly cared for him and got over my feelings for him but it took me a while. Years later, we became good friends and he apologized and said everything would be so different if he stayed with me. At that moment I was not into him anymore. Perhaps, I already had my fair share of disappointments. I heard he turned into soft drugs and 15 years later was found dead. He will always be a special friend and I pray God he found peace. With so much love to my dear friend R.
sounds to me he was really into you, so the end result was death! sry to say!!
@@austingulick God damn it 😂
Imagine what would have happened if he turned to hard drugs then!

Similar story here
Went through so many break ups with my ex BF - I had to finally leave Bc I wasn’t getting what I needed
He took his life 2 months later 🥲💔
His self esteem was pretty low too
I really loved him and I felt so bad for him
It's that cycle of use and abuse whiich erodes trust. It's like he's saying I ain't taking a chance on getting hurt.
At 57... I've discovered Bob Dylan... Never to late I guess... Have collected alot of his albums past few months.
Looking forward to hearing them. 🎶🎶🎶
Sometimes I wish that I was listening to Dylan for the first time knowing there was so much yet to come... from the evocative opening of Visions of Johanna to the sultry ballad of a thin man and then to the heartbreak of just like a woman.
At 17 I’ve discovered him recently and I’m in love with every word. He’s got a song for every moment of my life :)
Guitar, harmonica, voice with so much soul, and lyrics to break your heart.💚
I was a little kid when this song came out and am just now hearing and understanding all the lyrics. There 's so much pain (for the recipient) yet so much truth in Dylan's words.
This song got me through every lost opportunity in my life and helped me see the other side.
thank you for the idea of using the song in the way you describe, cheers!

Anyone who claims Dylan can't sing (which by the way is ridiculous in the extreme) should listen closely to this great song
His live performances were very inconsistent and he often sounded as if he was drunk or drugged. That said the guy was a poet and song writer of the highest caliber so maybe his singing voice is not so important?
It all started with "If Not For You" with a woman I once dearly loved, but ended with "It Ain't Me, Babe". Thanks for giving a solid soundtrack to my life, Song and Dance Man.
Add me,,if not for you time!!!!
January 21, 2021 today i had a really really shitty day, but Dylan’s song just makes me feel better.
This song is what I've been saying most of my life, "NO NO!! IT AIN'T ME BABE!!!".
How can one so young have written about the life experiences he did, oh yeah he's a genius
"A lover for your life and nothing more..." Who could sing that line with more musicality and passion? I respectfully submit...no one.
What I learned from this song is that we see too much in the person we will in fall in love with. Nobody can live up to the expectations of the person in love with him or her.
Man's got to know his limitations, and got to accept that which he cannot change. Anyone can find happiness by accepting life as it is and, death as it shall be.
@@edwardroche2480 brilliant
You are very wise to point this out..
True
I do this way too much. Put people on pedestals… they mark a couple things off the list and then I’m so hopeful that it’s them… and when it’s not it is extremely painful every time… because although I value myself it would be nice to walk through life with someone…
But… I seriously need to learn to stop doing this… because it is taking so much away from my enjoyment in life. It’s just not worth it.
I'm 44 years old, up till this point, this has been my theme song.
46 here, and yep everything inside is stone.
try 65... ... ...we hear you.
The most beautiful Dylan song...ever. Just perfect
During the latter part of my teenage years, while I was very much in the state of ultimate becoming.. I spent a handful of years in Montana, pushing my wonder-worldly experience far and beyond.. would often end days with a small close group of friends, sharing drinks and laughter.. and often I'd be the last one awake as we rolled into the later hours of the evening.. which always put a smile on my face, as I went in my room and closed the door behind me, and inserting Dylan's two disc No Direction Home.. which I always watched til the end, time and time again.. long night after long lonely night.. but I never felt alone.. and it's quite clear now, if it wasn't back then, that I was happily feeding my soul.. and to this day that experience still effects me in such a profound way.. might even be the greatest moments of my life
That harmonica will break you every time.
Jesus. This song makes me cry every time

A masterpiece written by a poet.
Arguably the first songwriter to have the characters in his songs project the full scope of human emotions, warts and all,in popular song.Pop songs used to be about romantic love but only the very superficial aspects. The first one to fill his songs with depth and ambiguity was Dylan. In my opinion at least. This had a very profound effect on the Beatles particularly John Lennon and later Paul Simon and many others.
Describing hundreds of years of folk music.
No body alive can be everything to anyone and if you expect that you will be sorely disappointed, no such person exists. A very wise song.
The first time I Saw Dylan live was half a lifetime ago and he sang this song as an encore - just him and an acoustic guitar as per original recording. A magical moment.
So lucky
Oh my god. Such wisdom in music is quite something to behold.
Just read Chronicles Vol. 1 for the third time. Lived through this period and remember when Dylan hung out at Antioch (Yellow Springs, Ohio) in the early 60's.
Another poetic, beautiful, and meaningful song from this absolute legend I really hope his music continues being shared with each new generation. There is no one quite like him and his raw, unadulterated voice. Every bit of his music is him through and through, his words his music his ideas. No dancers or fancy lighting needed just him his guitar and his harmonica.
How many have listened to it so?
You’re not aware that that song was written by Johnny Cash but he just brought the song to a younger crowd it was Johnny Cash in June Carter that did the song
How can people slag this man off. He's different class
I thought Johnny Cash and June Carter doing this song would always be my favorite version, until I heard him do it in concert last year. I thought I was going to cry, it was phenomenal. The version on Real Live, where he sings it with the audience, that's pretty good too.
Jack RW Oh wow, someone else that listened to Real Live! I have yet to see him perform this in concert but from videos I've seen it's amazing
I love Real Live! It's not totally consistent in quality, I will admit - he clearly cares much more about singing some of the songs than others - but it's got some great, great stuff on it. "I and I" is better than the album version, in my opinion. @@iamd.j.7590
The live 1965 version at the Hollywood Bowl will always be my favorite. He plays it electric with The Band and it's so great
every time he says it ain't me, babe
No, no, no, it ain't me, babe
It ain't me you're lookin' for, babe i wanna cry
That's the power of the poet's pen. He'd hate to hear me say that though, because he stated he was simply a song and dance man. But this MF is on another level to put tears in people's hearts 60 years later. Be thankful for those tears, some will never get the chance to understand. Be groovy, or leave, man.

Damn, his voice sounds soooo great in this song!
Yes that was back when he sang his songs like they were meant to be sung.
People surprised that Dylan ruined his voice by singing thousands of live shows in the open air venues in all kinds of weather with 1960 era microphones.
