Hahahaha I remember about two days ago when I started, I wondered why nothing happened haha
I had to Google it then I learned about the rosin :D
It's funny when we think it's sort of simple to play an instrument. I recall about a year ago I didn't even know what a "Capo" was (^_^) even though I wanted to play the guitar since I was a little kid haha

you should put on your shoulder rest where it feels like it naturally is resting on your shoulder grabbing it with your shoulder and chin without raising your shoulder, relax your arm let go and you should only be holding the violin without your arm now move your wrist side to side like your try to rock your finger without sliding and lightly touch the string now play and try to increasingly get faster

Excellent! Finally I learned how to vibrate the 4th finger. I have no trouble with the other fingers -- they produce a smooth and even vibrato -- but no one has ever taken the trouble to explain why my 4th finger vibrato always sounded so forced and contrived (and unpleasant). No wonder! I had been trying to do a wrist vibrato. Finger vibrato is the answer for this 4th finger. Thank you ever so much, Julie Artz Becker. Now that I'm 62 I'm finally ready to stop avoiding 4th-finger vibratos (I had been shifting all around the fingerboard in order to avoid this whenever possible.)

+Erin Dsouza Learning violin is so difficult but really rewarding when you start to make progress. I started violin as an adult, at 23, and have been playing 3 years; I still feel crappy though. but I suggest going back to some old sheet music and exercises that you did a while back and see how easy it has become! :) Muscle memory is a huge thing for violin so it just takes time.

.... BAM. Exactly what I was noticing. She didn't even explain what type of vibrato we were learning, and vibrato doesn't come from the finger. Vibrato comes from the motion of either the wrist or arm, the finger simply follows in their motion eventually leading to said vibrato.

  • @paulyoshida1747

This exercise, as shown, doesn't lead to the "normal speed vibrato" as demonstrated at 2:25. In the slow version, an "arm vibrato" is being shown, where the wrist is locked and the whole arm is moving back and forth, pivoting from the shoulder. However, in the "normal vibrato," she is using a wrist(hand) vibrato where the arm is still, but the hand moves back and forth from the wrist. If you want that sort of vibrato, you have to practice the "wrist" vibrato slowly, and gradually speed it up. If you want an arm vibrato, then you would do the exercise almost like it is being demonstrated here. I say "almost," because typically an "arm" vibrato pivots from the elbow, not the shoulder. Personally, I would recommend using your forearm(pivoting from the elbow), rather than using the entire arm(pivoting from the shoulder). This is a classic example of a confusion of the mechanics, which can lead to a confused student. Whenever speeding something up, you want to do a slow motion version of the faster motion, as exactly as possible.

Aha! Explaining that the finger moves away and backwards makes sense. The complete opposite to how it's done on a guitar. No wonder I was struggling a bit. I've just started to do it a bit but I can't wait to try what you show here.
