I consider this a failure. Why did he recommend Gamma knife instead of MVD? I'm in perfect health except being overweight. (I weigh 225) The pain is getting worse day by day. What should I do? Hello. The risks are lower and success rates are higher when performed by an experienced MVD surgeon. At our centre we typically perform 4 to 5 MVDs in a week, which is a HUGE number considering the rarity of the disease.

MVD on the other hand has been around for 4 decades now and is well established. Barring risks associated with surgery of 1 to 2 % , it is a relatively safe procedure offering a shot at permanent cure.
The chances that the MVD surgery will work is less after CyberKnife according to my neurosurgeon. I just went for consultation with a neurosurgeon, and I wish my Dr would have told me this before having cyberKnife 😔. I learned this thru the support group in FB as well.

I used to practise RFA for TN long ago. I dont do this anymore, because of feedback from patient who underwent RFA first followed by MVD later. RFA is a temporary solution. MVD is permanent. I strongly agree with Dr. P regarding MVD surgery. My Unbearable symptoms began at age 57, August 2020. After taking high doses of Lamictal (potent anti seizure drug) for several months, I requested surgery. Request was approved because I couldn't tolerate side effects of drug. Memory loss and balance issues kept me from being able to work. Since surgery in May, 2020, six months ago, I've had NO pain. "Memory" of pain yes - so intense was the pain I remembered how it felt when I went to the dentist a few weeks ago. I'm happy to say it wasn't actual pain! If you're suffering from TN, I highly recommend having MDV surgery. It will give you you're life back and new outlook on how precious life truly is. Prayers to you.
