Very detailed and perfect presentation Sir! My question is how often should I clean MAF Sensor? Maybe every time I do oil change? How many minutes should I wait for MAF Sensor dry? Hope you read this message! Thank you Sir!
Are you really supposed to inject cleaner inside the housing. I was always told properly just spray the sensors not inside the cartridge it short out the whole sensor unit. So note that the sensor is straight down never spray inside the cartridge of the sensor unit just the sensor on both sides not far not close but safe distance when spraying sensor always remember to keep the downside of the sensor down spraying the Sensor unit. Thanks Paul that was very instructional very educational.
My sisters Nissan Sentra dash light came on, in this case, I think it's called "service engine soon". So, she goes to one of the biggest names in auto repair and here is the bill, around 1,300 dollars. What's wrong? Well, the Mass Air Flow sensor code came up (100 dollars to throw the scanner on a car, when it's free at the auto parts store). Also noted, missing "clip" on air filter box, so, box won't close. The rest were minor things like air, oil, cabin filter and wipers. So, they tell her, 332 dollars for the Mass Air Flow Sensor AND 96.50 to install it. By the way, Nissan charges about 100 dollars LESS than that AND aftermarket ones are about 200 less. What's the solution to the missing clip? You got it, a NEW AIR CLEANER BOX!! 600 dollars plus 70 to install it. She is stunned and calls me, I see the estimate and say B/S. So, I take out the Mass Air Flow Sensor and clean it, it takes about 1 minute to remove it and put it back. Don't know where they get off charging 96 dollars for that install. I change the filters, and find nothing wrong with the air box. 6 dollars at Nissan and I have a new clip. 600 dollars saved (I would have found a aftermarket for much less). I reset the codes and fire up. I still got a code for the Mass Air Flow Sensor. So, is it ACTUALLY BAD? Do I NEED to buy a new one (but not the 332 dollar one)? I took another look and what did the shop miss (or worse yet, created)? A large tear in the hose that goes from air box to throttle body. Nissan wanted around 90, I decided to try a 18 dollar aftermarket, put it on, turned on car, and NO MORE ENGINE LIGHT. So, if that Sensor still has codes throwing, check for air leaks before you toss it. And find a more honest repair shop.
I would add that the rubber o-ring be removed first, I experienced rubber warping with the MAF cleaner. Then clean inside first then outside wire. Lube the o ring a bit before reinstalling so it won't dry out.
I used Carb Spray Cleaner to clean my MAF. Helped as far as I can tell. I'll be on the look out for this specific product however and clean it again when I find it.
Thanks Paul, I'm having issues like poor revving, lost of torque, hesitation, no power, very low gas mileage, can't reach over 3000rpm, etc. I already changed the filters, spark plugs and even that idle regulator which was expensive. Only thing left is MAF, so thanks on your video, gonna clean it like you suggested and than try it. It's a Ford Fiesta 1.3i Endura engine.
Electrical contact cleaner will work fine too, but great tips on cleaning the mass air flow sensor. But still important message that Petrol, WD40 (except WD40 electrical contact cleaner) and any water based solution will NOT work! And very good tips on not touching the contacts directly! And great point that it needs to be done EVERY time the air filter is changed! Remember using wrong solution or touching directly can damage the sensor, so DON'T do it!
Hey, I used isopropyl alcohol which doesn't leave any residue and it worked just fine. It was really dirty too. With 111000mi I don't think it was ever cleaned. I've only had it for the last 18000mi.
Yeah but was it compressed? Did you use a rag or a q-tip dipped in that alcohol and rub the wires? I'm not saying alcohol is not a descent substitute but your comment is lacking a lot of details that depending on how they're answered can totally discredit your claims that isopropyl alcohol is a viable substitute.
Just get the recommended stuff instead of cheaping out with what you have on the shelf. A can of mass air flow sensor cleaner costs about 6 bucks. All these people using alcohol or brake cleaner or carb cleaner, are hacks
This is a very good video, delivered clearly, with all the warnings that I humbly believe should be heeded. I'd never think of touching part of the sensors themselves. My father was the only person I've ever seen "mechanically" clean one. He used to take anew scalpul out and lightly run it up and down the wire with the touch of brain surgeon. for the rest of us mere mortals, we should stick to the spray, heh heh. God bless man!
I would add to keep the MAF upright at all times when spraying, the puddle on the floor will stain so down with some card. No need to go point blank with the spray, it's solvent. Extra care not to drop it, easily damaged through shock. Eye protection and gloves. If you have hands you can do this job.
actualy if you clean any oil sludge in the engine vent side of the air cleaner that also makes the engine breathe better. btter to just clean the whole plastic assembly that goes from the air cleaner side and the throttle body side. remove the whole thing and wash it out as well as clean the MAF sensor.
Outside the USA may be difficult to find MAF cleaner. But you can use good quality electric contact cleaner. Many report success. Of course, do at own risk.
I wish all how to videos were as concise and to the point and "flufless" as yours. I've got a question I hope you would be willing to answer. Just put on a new mass air flow sensor. Runs totally better except... *Engine slightly trembles in high gear going up a hill at lower RPMs. *While idling, the tach will pulse between 600 and 900 RPMs. (I drove this quite a while before I placed the sensor.) Could my plugs be fouled or does the computer take a day or two to recalculate everything. Or might I have some other sensors that need replacing? (2000 S-Type V-6) Thanks for any help you can give me, Neil

You can use isopropyl alcohol. Drip a few drops on the 2 wires hidden right inside. The stubborn carbon deposits just won't come loose. Use a pin to glide over the wires to dislodge the carbon. The wires are tough enough and its not like spider web fragile. When you are done, you will see 2 shiny wires with something cylindrical in the wire's center. I put back everything and it works like new and awesome acceleration. Idle is at 750 rpm and absence of rpm surging or engine dying off. CRC spray for MAF is just overpriced. Just don't use cotton buds or something that will leave traces on the wires which gets heated up and it will burn if something is stuck there
