One of the absolute gems of TH-cam. It is such a precious document... to hear Britten’s genius and open hearted musical instincts in the phrasing of this single melodic line... there are no words to describe the beauty of this kind of music making. One can hear both the shepherd and his flute in their performance! It’s wonderful to hear both Pears and Britten dovetailing from verse to verse in a call and answer exchange. What an enormous privilege to hear this partnership in real time!
i am not an english speaker of english, however i also think that based on his pronounciation in the introduction he says the words the other way round. you are correct about the title ofcourse.
Title is wrong....Pears says "I wander as I wonder"....But nevermind, as the music making and the rarity of this audio are rarities. Thanks kadoguy2006.
I am currently listening to the various arrangements of this most beautiful tune.
What a treat to hear this historic recording ❤

This arrangement is now published in the Britten Folk Songs collection published by Boosey and Hawkes.
No, the title IS "I Wonder as I Wander" and that is what Pears says and sings. Glad you enjoyed it!
Stunning, and such a rare recording. Huge thanks for sharing.
This is quite stunning. Amazing little piano bits. That's also one of my favorite pictures of PP and BB.
thank you for posting this!
Haunting
You are right, they never recorded it because there was a copyright problem with the tune.
This is good stuff. I am not into religion but glad this available

Of course Pears and Kadoguy are right. In English "wa" reads often "wo" and "wo" reads "wa". Think of "water" and "wonderful".
play it again : 0:32

Nope. They both say and sing I wonder as I wander. As an English English speaker this is exactly how I’d do it.
