I use to go to school in South Yorkshire in the 70s and 80s, I remember the heavy snow lasting weeks, and it didn't disrupt school, buses or cars. Why is it so difficult now?

Centimetres of snow , OMG how the hell do people think we managed 50 years ago we didn't have inches of snow we had a foot of snow, we managed, we went to school we had our milk and post delivered, WOW centimetres of snow. These days people see a flake of snow and everything grinds to a halt.
Educating the UK population about the benefits of winter tires could significantly reduce traffic disruptions. Currently, I would say 90% of drivers use summer tires year-round, even in winter. While not a complete solution, switching to winter tires would improve safety in snow and icy conditions and likely decrease the need for the media coverage showing vehicles struggling in minimal snowfall. 🤣
It is not new, because majority of UK inhabitants does not have a clue, that winter tyres should be used not only when there is snow, but also when outside temperature is below 7 degrees celsius for several weeks.
@@bear1245 I've got Michelins and Goodyears with great tread on my car, I used to just have cheaper varieties. I'm quite chuffed about them (I'll probably slide off the road next time I'm out now). We don't get the bad weather that other countries routinely get, so there's little need for winter tyres. The Gulf Stream keeps the UK pretty mild, that's why we get excited at snow.

Hi from the Highlands. Just a point: the whole "UK" thing isnt fairly applied here. We have small communities remote and far apart with mountainous and deserted terrain in between with often only one road in between or a detour of 60,70 miles on a similar road. We use winter tyres, the roads and ploughed and salted and are prepared at home. There are far fewer roads and cars to worry about but we quietly go about our thing and get on. The chaos down south like just now isnt the same as up here at all.
For the record - The snow/slush was a only a few cms in Oxfordshire and melted in the morning as its been raining non stop overnight. It is the excess water that is a problem on the roads.
It's always a tragedy when England gets a little snow in winter, cause they don't prepare the roads properly, cause the council's will not spend tax payers money where its needed most.
