I forgot that we used to call them zipper jackets until you brought it up. I haven't worn any carhartt products in quite a few years because 90% of the products don't fit me. Lets just say I've grown out of them, but down in the flats around the steel mills everybody had them or the green welders jacket. Thanks for the history lesson and bringing back a few memories.

I really loved these jackets, but when we were working in Germany I got to know the Engelbert Strauss brand. Also workwear but much more modern. Yes, it doesn't have the classic look, but the jackets are so much lighter, breathable, durable and you don't see every stain. And all this at very good prices. Even thick winter jackets cost around 100 dollars.

My first J97 as a new apprentice in the early 2000's just sold for 600% from clearance price I got it for ($30) I've gained 50lbs since I first bought it but it fit like a glove. It was so beat up, welding burns, fire caulking, etc.... Can't believe it sold in less than 15 minutes for over $200 bucks!!!

My adult son and I found a vintage, American made, J97 at the Allegan County Antique Fair in Michigan last month. Perfect condition and perfectly faded. I said “If you don’t buy it, I will”. He bought it, $50.00. What a find!
I traded a leather Dale Earnhardt Jr jacket for my Car art Makita tool jacket 16 yrs ago. Its still just like new,absolutely perfect condition, still a little stiff but I've never got it dirty so I never had it cleaned. I have 3 prize possession, my new Cadillac,my 6k$ Tudor Panda Swiss timepiece & this jacket. I live in Florida so it only gets worn maybe 15 times a yr. Ill be buried in mine!
Nice explanation regarding the two currently available mens Detroit Jackets. I've got style 103828 (drop tail, blanket-lined) for work purposes but I think I might invest in style 106234 (Re-engineered Rugged Flex) in Sand Dune for casual wear.
Thanks for the video! Awesome content. The straight down from the shoulders is commonly known as the Work shirt or Work jacket. The taper that you were wanting is sometimes called the Western shirt/jacket, or Slim Fit. As you had said, there are so many body types to try and build a jacket for. Work fit will work for anyone, as the Tapered fit wouldn't be pleasant for my gut, haha
Just picked up the latest version but, since the temps have been consistently hitting the upper 80s to low 90s where I live,I obviously haven’t had the chance to really wear it. I look forward to putting it through its paces this fall though.

Actually, I have a few WIP items because I'm sick of the lack of durability in modern clothes and I'm extremely limited in my options where I currently live (Taiwan). Keep up the good work!
I actually have a RNJ001 new with tags in medium, can't believe I actually managed to find one. The one the movie had a different liner, custom. The one shown in this video the numbering is correct but the pocket stitching under the zipper looks a tad different than from the movie and the one I have.

I had a green one for 25 years. Frayed cuffs, faded... many years ago it was demoted from daily to cutting wood and 4 wheeling. My wife bought me a new brown hooded carhartt jacket to replace it so I got rid of it. I used to tell folks I have no regrets. Well 50 years on this planet and I finally f'd up. I lost part of my soul when I let that green beater go. Let this be a lesson to you my friends.

Sad to hear that they discontinued the original Detroit. I bought my first one in 1977 when I was hauling steel pipe, loved that jacket and wore it for 7-8 years before it got so ragged I had to retire it and then I bought another one and wore that one out! Luckily I was in a Rural King a few years ago and they had a big rack of Detroits, picked up a couple of new ones, one in brown and a black one. To be honest man, the new ones are junk and look like shit, I would never buy one. Carhartt screwed up!

Great Job Carl. We talked about this years ago when the Carhartt Detroit was being made in Mexico and redesign. This icon should always be made in the US. Always Buy American made when possible. You are helping a neighbor pay their bills.
Someone please tell Carhartt that changing the inside pockets was a complete fail. 90% of people are right handed. When my phone rings I want to pull the main zipper down with my right hand and reach into the open top pocket to grab my phone. Why they decided to put the zippered pocket on the inside left is a complete mystery. When you've got it right leave it alone.
I wore my moss green vintage one until it was tattered. Didn't even know it was worth anything. New one is not nearly as good looking but it's for work.

The made in India quality really went Down a lot. With softer blenket liner it sagged with the first wash. The outer material also went down in quality which is softer doesn't hold the shape. Definitely not for the looks.

Can someone recommend me a Detroit model for summer, pretty please? Summer here is minimum 40 °C, and recently found some second hand models through IG in a good price, around 10 $ and above. I'm a girl and typically wore S and XS in mens.
It has zero give and looks weird when it is new. It's either have it feel like a straight jacket, or have a giant oversized jacket with sleeves as big as pant legs. 3/10.

With furry collar. My favorite jacket, he wears it on moto bike. Trying to match him, I want a Detroit jacket for girls. I feel like its a great subtle match. Also, his jacket, he said it took two years to be properly comfy and look not so stiff.
first made in the USA by proud Union members, then the jobs were shipped to Mexico, after that production was moved to India. Prices go up, quality goes down.
The only carhartt you'll see in store here in the UK is the WIP, and they're just a fashion brand. You'll mostly need to go to an online workwear company. I love my carhartt but in the UK, the carhartt official site has pretty crap customer service and as I said the WIP is really for the hipster.

They made a Trucker Jacket in Carhartt Canvas back in 1997. Loved it and it's never been made after that.
I have one I got off Ebay with a company logo embroidered on it, very comfortable.

In Europe the WIP line is cheaper, while the traditional line is more expensive than they are in the US.
This isn’t the case in the UK.
In Germany WIP is more expensive than Original Carhartt. It is just harder to get the Original.

Coming from the UK I would be interested to see a durability test on the WIP jackets compared to the others.

It has zero give and looks weird when it is new. It's either have it feel like a straight jacket, or have a giant oversized jacket with sleeves as big as pant legs. 3/10.
@@HanzBlitz-i8t My husband was issued an aviation jacket in Navy when he became rescue swimmer. Has leather Union Jack, his Name tag with name and gold air wings, and the leather rescue swimmer logo. With furry collar. My favorite jacket, he wears it on moto bike. Trying to match him, I want a Detroit jacket for girls. I feel like its a great subtle match. Also, his jacket, he said it took two years to be properly comfy and look not so stiff.

The only carhartt you'll see in store here in the UK is the WIP, and they're just a fashion brand. You'll mostly need to go to an online workwear company.
I love my carhartt but in the UK, the carhartt official site has pretty crap customer service and as I said the WIP is really for the hipster.
The WIP would still be a good jacket that would last for years. Especially if it is a casual jacket that you wear out to different places.
@Art-is-craft yeah maybe, they're just about double the price and not the same build strength though.
I'll keep an eye out if they go on sale.
