    I'm a doula-in-training, but I want to also be a lactation consultant, a birth educator and midwife's assistant.

      Curious what kind of training you need to be a midwifes assistant? I just finished doula training with When Push Comes to Shove and would love to work as a midwives assistant. Considering school for a birth Attendant as well.

    Hey, so after having two kids which are nw 1 & 3, Im pretty sure that I know I want to become a midwife now. However as my children are still young and I do intend on trying for at least 2 more children it is not the right time for me to become one as it is a medical field and will take some time to actually become one however as a Doula is along the lines of what I am looking to become I thought for now this could be a great option and wanted to know your thoughts? I am 34 atm so very aware of my age and body clock in regards to hvn children. I feel stuck cz I need to find a balance ya know.

    • @ElanaVital83
      @ElanaVital83 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      As a doula in training myself, I say go for it! Doula training can help you decide if you want to move on to midwifery or not. Personally I don't think I'll be moving on to midwifery, but most of the girls in my class are and we had 2 midwives speak at our class. You have plenty of options.
      Maybe you're like me amd just want to do birth and post partum doula in combination with lactation consultant and midwife's assistant (that's where your client is the midwife, not the mother). I also think doing birth educator is interesting, too.

    • @ElanaVital83
      @ElanaVital83 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Also, there are plenty of doulas who work during their own pregnancy and have discounted birthing prices for other doulas. You get into the birthing community and it also gives you an insiders look for support for your own births.
      Imagine having your instructor, or one of your classmates or colleagues offering support for your next pregnancy. It's a great community of women supporting each other.

    • @ElanaVital83
      @ElanaVital83 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Believe it or not, there are doulas looking to do volunteer births to meet birthing hour requirements. Focus on getting a midwife if you can only afford one because a midwife is trained medically. As for the doula, ask your midwife if they know of any doulas looking to volunteer or who have an affordable rate. Ask around at your local birth center, too.

    • @ashleyashleym2969
      @ashleyashleym2969 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well midwives ARE nurses they're just highly trained nurses that can do a lot more than a typical nurse. So you kind of do need to become a nurse to be a midwife, just like if you wanted to be a surgeon then you would have to become a doctor first.

    • @CajunStork
      @CajunStork  5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      CPMs & LMs are actually not required to be nurses first. Similar to how a dr doesn’t become a nurse before they deliver babies. We are trained in very specific ways though and do not have prescription privileges (although we can provide medications for hemorrhage, GBS prophylaxis, IV fluids therapy, etc...). The requirements largely depend on the state. CNMs here very rarely practice out of the hospital. I believe only 2-3 in the state

    CPM midwife = lay midwife. They have a high perinatal mortality rate. Instead, get a nurse-midwife if you want good care; they have a master's degree and lots of experience and training.

    You should consider gender-neutral language. I was thrown off within the first minute when you kept referring to the non-birthing parent as the "husband". Not everyone is married, not all non-birthing partners are men, and not all couples are straight. This video also contained some misinformation as well.

    • @CajunStork
      @CajunStork  3 ปีที่แล้ว +38

      With respect, I do realize that not all couples are married and not all couples are straight. However, my clientele is largely a christian-based, married (not all) and straight (not all) practice as I live in South Louisiana. In my culture, it’s actually offensive to call the husband “partner” (similarly, my married lesbian couples want their spouse called their wife, not their “partner”) and many long term committed couples in this area will refer to their partners as “husband” even though they aren’t married. I also have served singled moms where there is no partner or husband involved at all and we can adjust for that too, but I know they still get useful information from my videos despite the husband references. I know I’m going off on a tangent here but I’m not a TH-cam star, I’m a real life practicing midwife working with my own cultural norms and just trying to share information that helps people. As a midwife, I connect with my clients on an individual bases basis and adjust my language for their personal situation, but on a public stage I desire to maintain my cultural norms and refer to their partners as spouses.
