Here in the West (Idaho) we have a lot of old cabins & farmsteads that have been preserved. The one thing I noticed was how small they were & how low the ceilings were (One reason to conserve heat I imagine). Very nice tour; my daughter & I will visit when I get there.

In the bedroom there was a spinning thing covered with yarn (yarn looked square wrapped around the 4 arms) that is a skeiner. After you spin and ply (when you twist 2 or more threads together) but before you use the yarn it needs to be 'set'. So you wind it off onto that four armed wheel and that creates a skein of yarn that you tie off in a few places so it doesn't tangle and then you gently wash it and hang to dry with a gentle weight on it to hold it taut - that 'sets' the twist so it won't unwind when you knit. Then you roll it into balls (put it back on the skeiner to wind off of it or use your hubby's arms to hold it open), wind weaving shuttles or twist the skein and store it that way. The skeiner is also a measuring tool as you know how long each revolution of yarn is and just multiply by number of wraps to get length. :-) Sorry for the long explanation!

This was wonderful. I love looking at all the old ways come to life. My husband worked in Tennessee for a few years and we visited The Museum of Appalachia. It is a lot like this. Have you ever been there? Also Cade's Cove was a fun trip. And a place in the Smokey's I think was called Cherokee Village. We live in Ok. There is a place called Harbor Village near Grove, Ok that is like this too. Very nostalgic and sentimental. I love books about life back then. Some things of those times would be nice to go back to, some not. Lol

I love places like this, you guys had the place to your selves.
I am listening to a book you two might like. Trials of the Earth by Mary Mann Hamilton.
All about logging and crossing the sunflower river, and living in Parchment where the state farm is before it was there 1880s on. Its at least the third time I have listened to it on audible. I know you mentioned once you don't think that's really reading but I have 30 min drives to work and home and the basic radio isn't much better than TV so i listen to alot of book this way.
Glad you got out and had a great day, I enjoyed it.

ThymeToSow, I often think that, but then I think about doing laundry for 9 kids over a wash tub in the winter, or giving birth in that tiny cabin in the middle of July and I think - uh, maybe not. Lol I do love the old history tho. If you invent a time machine be sure it has a button to bring you back to the present, just in case.

Years ago we got to visit Harbor Village near Grove, Oklahoma. They had collected and preserved all kinds of old structures and antiques. There was a dentist's office (scary), a millinery, all different ages and styles of log cabin construction. It was almost too much to take in on just one visit. You made me want to return there.

Danny I thought YOU had a posh smokehouse. I've sent so many people to see your video explaining the build & pipe set up, but man that one's like a little house you could live in! Lol Just get high on the smell of smoked bacon sitting on the front porch. You were wise to go on a weekday I bet it's packed on the weekends. Those cabins were just beautiful but the preservation of all of that, I think gets more & more important the further away from it we get. Our ancestors were way tougher than we are.

That mystery house was really weird, I looked it up, and couldn't find that, but an almost identical attraction in Santa Cruz, CA which charges $8 admission and $5 parking. I'm beginning to think these "mystery spots" are just a ploy to make money.
