- How can we combine risk reduction yet preserve eco-functions of rivers in cities? What challenges do water systems face? And how much wilderness are we willing to accept in the city?
Questions like these are at the heart of the FRIAS Lunch Lectures 2024/25 "Sustainable Transformations". The Lunch Lectures are a series of events hosted by the Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies (FRIAS), focusing on knowledge, science, and technology in their broadest sense. Each lecture lasts about 30 minutes, is typically held in English, and is followed by an open discussion with the audience - a perfect opportunity to gain new insights and exchange ideas.
In this video, Karl Matthias Wantzen (UNESCO Chair "Rivers and Heritage" as well as an EUCOR Excellence Chair "Water and Sustainability") and Luisa Cortesi (Erasmus University and Member of the Young Academy for Sustainability Research) share their perspectives on human and non-human interactions with rivers and explore central questions of sustainable water management as well as disaster prevention in urban areas.
