Unclogging 4 Culverts Clogged With Leaves And Major North Conway NH Floods

  • I do not encourage anyone to enter culverts, unclog anything, or enter flooded areas as it can easily become deadly without the proper training
    I unclog drains for fun in my spare time (I have been trained in culvert inspections for years with private co.) and I am osha trained.
    Exploring anything abandoned can be dangerous or deadly without experience. I don't encourage anyone to enter any abandoned structures. Not only is safety a concern, but often times its illegal, and when possible I seek out permission from the owner or local police. I simply go to document its history before it's gone forever and I leave things the way I find them. I only take pictures and only leave footprints. I assume all the risks and responsibility before doing this. Please don't attempt to do this on your own. There could be nails, asbestos, falling concrete, soft floors, animals, or other hazards. Thanks for watching.

    About the gravel next to the road. 30 years ago I heard, the warmth of the road allows grass to grow next to it prematurely. This attracts wildlife close to the roadway, because this is the first grass to be available to them coming out of the winter. Public safety hazard. This was a southern thing. Salting roadways should kill grass next to the road. Anyway... Love the videos!

    • @foxymacadoo
      @foxymacadoo ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Plus the gravel is also there to help prevent fires from sparks from rocks hitting each other when one is sent flying from tires, bottles being thrown out car windows, cigarettes etc. Not really there for drainage. See that a lot where I live up north. Done properly it actually resists erosion as well.

    • @XtreeM_FaiL
      @XtreeM_FaiL ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Salt attracts wildlife too.

    • @wyvernliberatus8474
      @wyvernliberatus8474 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Granted our weather is less extreme, but here in Britain we have all sots of growth (not just grass) right up to the road. No road has a gravel edge. Many of our roads are also somewhat sunken. It doesn't cause any problem whatsoever, as far as I can tell.

I can only imagine what it all smells like too. Nice. Yeah the road that was washed out, if a vehicle hit it, not only would it be damaged, but the people in it could be hurt too. As someone who has designed culverts (and a few for NHDOT, incidentally), it's nearly impossible to justify oversizing something on a run that small despite knowing full well that it's going to back up eventually, and often. The practice is slowly improving, but tends to be more focused on correctly placing/sizing bridges to avoid scour. But unless you need to justify a fish passage or something, good luck trying to get something bigger than maybe 18" approved - though as you noted, even a tiny twig lodging in the wrong way will cascade into a blockage eventually.

  • @jessieflowers9639
    @jessieflowers9639 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    I love how much you care and take it upon yourself to make others aware of dangerous road hazards, intentionally thinking about situations that could happen if you left the road with a gaping hole and just turned around and drove away, maybe it’s a big enough hole they’ll build a bridge this time, that 2nd culvert isn’t helping anything except you to get to the other side. I found your channel today and I can’t stop watching, mesmerizing and satisfying 😊

    here in Canada, they do it for 3 reasons 1/ to help keep as much salt as possible out of the water table. 2/ to help with ice and snow plowing. 3/ To give cars/trucks a stable place to pull one tire off onto the side of the road safely. not sure if this helps you there but we have a very similar climate here as they do there. keeping grass from growing onto the road seems like a possible 4th reason to me as well, as that would apply to some of the roads around here that don't have gravel on the sides of them.

    I am amazed it so relaxing and satisfying it is to watch the clearing of drains, and he is so good at it. Congrats.

    I think this is the one of the best ones so far just because of the leaves in the beginning it's so clear how much it takes in

    Nice foot work with that stick Post, we had a lot of clogged street drains down here in NY with all of that rain. You know how many times I wanted to pull over and grab the cam!! 😎👍

    Omg it was so cute when you wanted to race that stick lol. Love how you’re always so happy when you’re out doing these things.❤ lol the soda cans though, I always hate when they go “ssss” too and you get sticky pop all over the place.

    Somebody probably has answered this but shoulder buildup is something most state DOT’s do as regular maintenance. They do this to prevent a lack of any shoulder material. If not replaced, it would just drop off into a steep ditch.

    This area has had a lot of rain and flooding. I was on route 171 and saw many areas where people were making repairs. The good thing about rural areas is some people have tractors and backhoes to help with.
    Great use of the snowmobile sign!!!
