- I Found a Dugout Homestead in the Oregon Desert!
This is a long overdue video of a pretty amazing dugout homestead site I found on the tail end of another trip I was on. Come along and explore the site with me!
Hope you enjoy joining me for more of my overland, car camping, history hunting, and exploring in some of my other videos as well. Above all, I hope you find some adventures of your own!
Cheers,
Casey

My dad's first home was a dugout on his parents' homestead in Wyoming. Mom's family homesteaded in Wyoming too, and to this day, she's using the original homestead shack. It's been expanded through the years, but today's dining room is her grandfather's original homestead shack. There aren't many families who are still living on their homestead five generations later, let alone still using the first home they built there!
No banksters needed. That was the style of the late 1800's. Today - should there be an 'experimental' code compliance exemption for the first few years today?
☆ The 'soddies' my grandmother and her 11 siblings lived in were the sort of starter homes that could now help us while billionaires get busy to loot our national treasury. I think it could be Great to make sustainable housing off grid. Do you think we'll have much choice? Did Klaus Schwab say something about this already? Something about poor and happy? I'm so poor I can hardly pay attention.😅
bro just casually drops a video after a year lol
I even checked a few months ago to make sure I wasn’t unsubscribed.
I had to do a double take when the vid popped up. I said no that’s not him lol.
HAHAHAHAAHAHAAHAHHAHHAAAAA!
He said it had been a couple months since he posted. Maybe he had some legal issues and was just released.
Doesn't even say hi...
This homestead haunts me with so many questions: where did the inhabitants come from, what are the many stories of their lives, what became of them, what were their joys, hopes, triumphs, their defeats and tragedies? What visitors came through, How often did they make it into town, when did the last person leave and a thousand other mysteries…thank you for bringing us along, a real treat for this homebody.
Your mind is built of great depths, gifted with a spirit of inquiry, curiosity and imagination, much appreciated!
Father was a kid , riding in the rolling prairies of ND in 1911. His horse and he fell thru the roof of a sod house, dug into a hill side. It was so old and overgrown that nobody knew it was there. He was injured and had to wait for searchers to find him.
Wow, that would've been scary!
That is crazy story! But Sod roofs were used all the way up Norway. The Sovereign wealth fund of Norway maintains many of them. You can visit em!
How was the 🐎
So happy to see you back thanks for a great video
Welcome back had missed your content. Thanks for sharing and taking us along.
I believe the homestead was located near the largest trees in area. I think they were the parent trees of all the smaller trees in area. Thats probably why it was built there to offer a little shade. If you took a core sample of the trees you would find them to be very old. Very cool ...
When I was kid, born in 1942, we used a tractor and wooden sled to pick up hardpan in the field and pile it at the property line. I imagine horses were used before tractors. We had outhouses behind the homes. A lot of junk, one mans junk is another man's treasure, was thrown into the pit when it buried and another one dug. We found some valuable bottles in old dumps. Thanks for the video.
PS I have an old foundation on my property in La Pine that was built before electricity was available. There is an old wood cook stove that was damaged by excessive heat where the house was.
Hard pan is rocks? We called it picking stone in Michigan.
GLAD YOU ARE BACK!!!
Fascinating. The more you can tell us about the lives of these people, the more interesting it is. Thanks!
You might want to look up the Fort Rock Homestead Museum. If you are near by, they are usually open around the weekends from end of May until early September.
Very interesting. Thanks for sharing. And greetings from Sweden, I used to live in Kennewick, Longview, Seattle, Portland…. I never got enough of geography. Although the sunshine over past those mountains is noooooo joke once it comes out you know it and those winds man you are NOT kidding, that dust is like a sandblaster.
My grandparents pioneered in the Sandhills of Nebraska (as children). They lived in lean-tos and soddies before their fathers build their first farmhouses.
Big, hardworking families, some straight from Ireland in the 1880s.
Glad to see you back!
9:35 I went on deployment to the western Pacific, WESPAC, in 1975. As we approached the Philippines, I thought about the guys who had come before me, all the sea battles fought in the area by the Navy in world war 2. Oh, crap, those guys did not have any AC! Respect for the job they got done went up a couple of rungs.
I love the history of WW2 in the Philippines. Been to cabanatuan and Douglas prison camps. Also been to the start of the death march . Also the cross on Mt Samamont. I know I'm spelling these wrong....so much more to say.....
My husband can finally stop saying, “Man, it’s been a while since Coyote Works put something out!” I was the lucky girl to inform him there was a new video.🎉
Glad you’re back!

Thanks! I try to get out there as much as I can.
I was a surveyors helper for my grandfather in the 60s, we looked for rock piles and walls ,they were used as permanent corners and property lines, also trees as corners.

Please keep the videos comings and I hope all is well with you.

Good to see you back
So cool! That you Casey! Great to see you and hear your voice!
Welcome back. Wow !!
Missed your videos always looking forward to seeing them.
My senior thesis for my architectural degree back in the mid '70s was related to "earth-integrated" structures, mainly homes. Your find was interesting. Of course, there were many tens of thousand of earth-sod houses built on the American prairies mainly during the mass migration to the Midwest during the latter half of the 19th century. Thanks. 🙂
Casey! So glad to see you back! I was honestly worried about your health. Good to see you back with some amazing content. Looking forward to catching more videos in the future too!
This is a good reminder of how well we have it now and how hard life was for our forefathers. They built a great nation. God bless America!
did they?
@@daciefusjones8128 rapist pres.... NO
I think its the other way around.i think they had it made and today it sucks
@ well I must be one of the few who like things like electricity, refrigeration, grocery stores, Chinese food, the automobile and roads, medical advances that have kept me alive, improved infant mortality rates, and an overall better standard of living.
@ and don’t forget clean water and indoor plumbing. People like to ponder how simple of a life that would be back then but in reality it was a cold cruel harsh world that would rather kill you than let you survive.
My two great Uncles had dug outs on their homesteads in western Nebraska. We were fortunate to get a photo of one.
Just what I was looking for. Good to see you Casey!
Was thrilled when I got the notification that you had released a new video. Glad to see you back, sir!

Great to see you back Casey! Whatever reason you've been away, none of my business, but I appreciate that you've come back. Great vid.

Awesome!!! I was waiting for your video
Mr. Casey, you made me the happiest woman. I was so happy to be notified that you had a new video out. I really couldn't believe it, because it's been so long. I hope you are back to stay. But if not, I understand. I understand between work and life in general and then editing content on your videos does take a lot of time. But the one thing that I missed on this video is your music intro and ending. I do hope that you make a video at least once a month (hopefully). Thank you for sharing and God Bless you and your family. 🥰⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐(your a star in my book)👍👍👍👍👍(🌹🐞🦂🌵)
Glad to see that you're well, man.

OHHH SNAP! If it isn't the long lost Coyote Works. Glad to see you back Casey.
That’s one of my favorite activities that I don’t get to do enough of.
Welcome back brother. I've missed your wanderings....
Good show. The climate around 1900 in a goodly portion of Central and Eastern Oregon was not at all like it is now. There was enough rainfall to grow most grains until about 1915. That's when the exodus began, and folks moved into town or the Willamette Valley.
Good to hear from you again!!!
Glad to see you posting again hope to see more of your videos!!
Warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer. Desert survival!
Casey! You’re back! Woohoo! Missed you bud!
I was going to guess the wall was from protection from flash flood and land marker. Very interesting video.
