We grew up in the same community (West Philly) and attended high school together. I remember him as a kind, sweet and talented individual. He is dearly missed. Thanks for the upload.
Music that just stay with you. So many memories. George Howard you may be gone, but your music continues to inspire and lift us up on certain days if we should forget.
I seen George Howard in concert when he was with us and the brother jammed. He will definitely be missed. Still listen to his music today. It never gets old.
You're so right, it never gets old. This man was a master class. So sorry his genius was taken from us at such a young age 😢 continue to rest in peace.
I love, love, love, love, LOVE!!! this song!!!! This is my all time favorite George Howard song, and I am pleased to say I got to see him perform @ The Playboy Jazz Festival many years ago just before he passed away, and it truly was a priveledge & honor to see and hear him just be great!! And he is and was! :)
Haunting, atmospheric, enchanting, spiritual, peaceful, harmonic, mesmeric, running out of superlatives for this track - it grabbed me first time up in ‘82 and just one of those tracks that just skips effortlessly from decade to decade - simply a blessed piece of music. RIP my son
My one question is, what were those 12 ppl listening to that they didn't like this amazing creation? This is my favorite George Howard song! R.I.P. GH!😢 Brothers, go get your prostate and rectal examinations!
George Howard set the standard for all soprano saxophonist during this era by the way he played this song. Its a masterpiece by my standards, he left us too soon.
All thought George is not with us just like so many of our great smooth jazz artist his music will always live on in our lives. mary thanks to TH-cam for allowing me to hear all of my favorite song
I hear you! Great shout out to the Bay Area's own Quiet Storm--102.9, KBLX!! Always a pleasure to read posts celebrating the Bay Area..This is a rare gem of a tune and album...The first time that I ever heard this was from a classmate and friend of mine during that era who kindly taped it for me (during the cassette era😊🎼🎵🎶)...Always looked fwd to buying Mr. Howard's music and once had the privilege of interviewing him backstage briefly at the now defunct (sadly) Kimball's East club in Emeryville. Mr. Howard had lost his luggage and apologized thst he had to wear a jogging suit during his performance. As always, he looked stylish and played beautifully in his own inimitable manner. He was in his own sonic lane, indeed! God bless his memory and we thank him for the rich musical legacy he left for us to appreciate and cherish. Thanks so much for your comment. Thank you to Stereophile for posting this. Blessings to The George Howard family, you, and all! Thank you.
@@lizgoodwin1812 I just found your comment. (Thanks TH-cam for not notifying me!!) Yes, I remember this when came out around September-October 1982. There was a lot of great music around that time. My ear was stuck to KBLX. Thank you for sharing your interview with Mr. Howard. He got better with time. It was a SHOCK for his untimely passing. However, his music will live on.
@@oldclip70I really appreciate your kind comment and agree with you wholeheartedly about George Howard's legacy. It certainly was a shock about Mr. Howard's passing in 1998-only 41 years young!🙏🏿 A friend of mine told me. First, it was the great unheralded saxophonist Art Porter Jr. in 1996; followed by another great unsung talent, guitarist Zachary Breaux, in 1997; and the year after George Howard's transitioning, it was the iconic Grover Washington, Jr. who passed away. The contemporary jazz music scene, in spite of its countless talents, hasn't quite seemed the same since the aforementioned artists passed away. Blessings to you!
I still remember the first time that I heard this, and them going to the local Turtle's Records & Tapes to buy it. Upon being told that it hadn't come in, but would arrive be maybe later in the day; I immediately went to another Turtles's, only to find out that they didn't have it either! Returning to the first store, I was rewarded for my persistence by leaving w/ a copy of it, which I STILL have in pristine condition! Although I replicated it on CD, I'm going to have to resurrect my turntable! :-)
This song is amazing to the point each time I hear it I must make real efforts to stop playing it over and over again. The things that surprised me a lot is that I knew many of his song years before this one. I discovered this song only about less than 5 years. George Howard will be in my soul until my death... and perhaps even after.
This choon is my favourite on this Album, the bass player played so smoothly, he must of Played the Fret less bass , which i do played a fretless bass.
Nobody ... and I mean nobody could play the soprano sax like GH. Kenny G.? Pfft. Maybe Coletrane, but nobody was as melodic as George. Rest in peace dear man.
George came on the scene about the same time as Najee and Gerald Albright. He didn't make quite as much of a splash as those two. And Asphalt Gardens was released on a very small record label. So the distribution wasn't extensive. Still he was working and gigging. It was the 90s before he started achieving measurable success. I bought that Personal album on cassette. I'd like to have the Asphalt Gardens album. It's a little bit more jazz oriented.
George Howard in my opinion doesn't get credit enough for his contribution to smooth jazz. George started a trend of soprano saxophonists that included: Kenny G, Najee, Gerald Albright, Marion Meadows, Walter Beasley, Kim Waters, Boney James and etc. He preceded all of them! George Howard is the best smooth jazz soprano saxophonist of all-time hands down!
Brother you are absolutely correct. I'm a grown man and i admit i still get choked up that he is gone. I met George after he performed briefly at a North Carolina Central University festival. I asked his bus driver if I could speak with him and he invited in. We discussed the importance of smooth jazz radio surviving in terms of them performing live in different cities . When George passed away it hit me the exact same way it did for some people when they heard about Kobe. I was looking forward to traveling to places to see this brother perform. Asphalt Gardens was the first album I purchased by him and from there it just got better. Lol I would walk into a record store and purchase without any hesitation because I knew it was nice. He was the GOAT of the smooth jazz sax.
@@michaelunity7796 You and I must be related because I totally concur with your statement. I became familiar with him in the summer of '84. I was doing my summer college (Rust College) internship at a t.v. station. I went to the mall on a Sunday afternoon and this brother was playing Love Will Find A Way off the Dancing In The Sun album inside the record store. I immediately fell in love with his music right then! I cried like a baby when I found out that he had died of colon cancer. I never got a chance to see him perform live. That will forever be one of my biggest regrets.
All of you gentleman (including me) must be brother's of the same mother; I have everything George Howard ever did; I raised my children to his music (they hated it as kids, but duly grew to appreciate it as adults) and nothing, nor no-one will ever disuade me that brother George Howard wasn't the best to enhance the airways during his brief time on this earth, sax master indeed!!!!
I'm still listening in 2024 even after 38 years my man here
Mine too
He made the saxophone sing to your soul! So sad he left us so young!
LOOOOVED GEORGE! Miss him terribly, but we've still got his music
We grew up in the same community (West Philly) and attended high school together. I remember him as a kind, sweet and talented individual. He is dearly missed.
