We saw what a great job you'd done clearing it! I would suggest lining the base of your leaf mould bins with membrane to stop the roots but I suspect something like a holly hedge would still find a way in. It might slow it down thought. All the best, David
Good morning David. I've just replied to Terry's video on his pallet leaf mould bins. I love re-using pallets and there are so many of them about that no-none wants - all for free, my favourite word.. Take care. Nuka.
Thanks Nuka! Pallets are great, and especially useful on an allotment where woodwork can be a bit more rustic. Hope you're having a lovely December! All the best, David
Oh yes, it's one of those gardening words that has quite a variation of vowel sounds depending on your corner of the world. I've heard different pronunciations across the US on TH-cam gardening channels including 'caaaam-pust' with a lot of stress on the 'A', which doesn't exist! 😆Of course my version is the correct one because I'm Scottish and we invented compost, and most other things! 😄😄😄
@@SoilToilAllotment caaampust must be over in the Massachusetts/New England/ Northeastern area of the US. They talk different. Must be something in the water...
I've been toying with taking out my compost bay and putting a bed in there instead. It's really overgrown and right next to my plot. This is the push I needed! I'm going to move it into the unused hardstanding behind. It's not the best position, but it's the only real option I have sadly (and it means I can use the soil area for more crops!)
Fantastic! 🙂 I'm wondering if this makes me a TH-cam 'influencer'. 😃 One thing I would say is, I picked the wrong time to upload this video because the best time to do the move would be the spring. At the moment the compost you have is protecting the soil below. If you expose it now, the winter rain will wash some of that compost goodness out of the soil you reveal. If you cover it in waterproof plastic the soil will get cold and take longer to warm up in the spring without the overcoat of your existing compost. So, my recommendation is to leave it for now. Put your feet up for the winter and crack on with the move in the spring. I should have thought about this when I did the upload! Ooops! All the best, David
@@SoilToilAllotment Good to know thanks! I have a lot to learn! Part of the compost station is already on hardstanding so maybe I can move that section. The whole area is a mess though so I've got a load of shredding to do before I can even reach any of it. Will probably be spring before I can access it all :)
My leaf mould bin was again full of roots from the Holly hedge.
♻️Happy gardening, Terry King.
