    In my younger years, I would drool over the TeleVue Ranger when I would browse through S&T magazines. Fast forward to the third quarter of 1998, I bought one and in 2023, I still have it and use it.

    In the very early 2000's I was looking at getting my first scope; even emailed you for advise. Ended up with a Pronto bought at my local astronomy shoppe.....now long gone. Went through the usual jumping though hoops with barlows and such. A few years later I picked up a NexStar11GPS at the other local astronomy shop (again, gone.... :( ). First night in the back yard here in Phoenix I tried out the NexStar - and was not impressed. Barely brighter than my Pronto! This changed for the better; much better! once I got the big gun out in the desert in darker skies. Several scopes later, after filling out my SCT card I'm back to refractors. And I still have the Pronto (many diagonals later, not sure I could mate it up with the original high hat adaptor though......).
    I did tire of the purple fringing on things like Jupiter. And why is Mars such a PITA? Jupiter is so much easier!
    I'll add that me and GEM's just don't get along. Alt-Az seems to be my strong point. Can't imagine trying to learn a GEM and how to use a telescope at the same time. :^)

    I had a Tele Vue Pronto and loved that little scope. I even visually observed some super nova consistently over several nights with it. I saw more in that 70mm telescope than any other telescope I've owned. There was no excuse not to use it. I foolishly sold it to "upgrade" to a TV76. The TV76 was a good telescope, but it never had the snap to focus the Pronto possessed. Alas, both are now gone; however, I often entertain the thought of buying another Pronto. I am still a visual observer, but unfortunately I have mostly neglected the hobby. Excellent review, and clear skies.

    I love Tele Vue telescopes and their gear. I have owned the TV-85, TV-102, TV-101S, and many Naglers, PanOptics, and Radians. They still serve me well. I did not go to the pronto as my TV-85 was very portable. You gave a great review Ed. Thanks for sharing your experience with thoughts on the pronto.

    I just came inside from observing with my TeleVue Ranger and this video came up! Thanks for posting. The Pronto and Ranger, what made them special was their 6.8 focal length, much different from many refractors at the time which were a lot around f 11. My Ranger has been with me now for 15 years. Good quality. Tonight saw the moon and very little false color on the limb at medium magnification. Highlight with my Ranger has to have been the Venus transit in 2012.

    Excellent video, Ed! I bought a Pronto new, in 1999. I still use it, even for astrophotography (you're right about the halos, thank goodness for Pixinsight). It still performs great visually. My best views of so many objects have been through this great little scope.

    Thanks so much for this video, Ed. I sat with my Evergreen Pronto at my side while I watched this and just beamed. I have owned mine for well over 20 years and wouldn't part with it even though I have an APO and other large reflectors. If I were to be able to tally the exact minutes of use of all my scopes the Pronto is probably number one. It's a perfect telescope that I can be outside with and observing in less than a minute. I know it's not an apo but at the low powers that I use it with the little color that I see doesn't bother me in the least.
    It's amazing that you should bring up the Veil and 35mm Panoptic with Oiii filter. I showed people this exact setup with the Veil back in the Early 2000's at the Great Plains Star Party in Kansas and they were impressed. It's also great for Lunar Eclipses, Milky Way star clouds, and much more. It's the little telescope that could.....or should I say CAN.

    I bought a Televue 76 (successor to the Pronto I think) back in 2004 and used it visually on a Televue Telepod.. Ten years later, I mounted it on a rather flimsy EQ mount and tried my hand at astrophotography using a cheap Canon DSLR. Around 2019 it graduated onto a HEQ5 mount and I used my first dedicated astronomy camera. Today, in 2023, I am still using the TV 76. It's mounted on an AM5 mount, I use the ASI Air, ZWO Camera and Auto focusser. It's still the best telescope I have ever owned and I'll never sell it!

    Very interesting. There isn't enough TH-cam content about TeleVue, and especially their older kit. I've always thought about trying to get an old Pronto, but have been wary of the condition it might arrive in. Perhaps you could do a video on the process and costs of fixing your old Pronto, compared to not risking the used market, and buying a new TV-76. Many thanks...

      IMHO . TV 76 has better optic .
      I would only buy a Pronto or Ranger for sentimental or nostalgic value .
      TV76 cost the same as TV Pronto in 1993 if you figure the CPI. Inflation .
      Of course used tv pronto could be had at 1/3 price of TV76 right now .

    I remember sitting in study hall in 10th grade in the 1990s, looking at the very TV Pronto ad (sitting atop an Uranometria Atlas if I recall correctly) in Sky & Telescope shown here in the video. I also kept a print out catalog from Astronomics and the Orion Telescopes catalog in my bookbag. I'm sure all the most popular kids did back then. I think TV had another page ad showing a DSO image from the Pronto some months. This completely irresponsible video means I'm going to be checking classified ads, Ed. Not cool. 😃

      What's stopping me is I haven't seen everything. There are gaps in my knowledge. I have very little experience with the iOptron mounts, for instance. FWIW my sample size may be small but I have had very poor luck with the entire "5" series of mounts from Sky-Watcher. Club members have had problems. There is a variant in the US known as the Orion Sirius. I've owned 2 Sirius mounts and neither of them worked.

    • @cattaraugustonawanda4426
      @cattaraugustonawanda4426 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@edting What sort of problems with the HEQ5 ? Some of what I have read has been coffee grinder noise of the gears due to backlash in the gear train but there are two cures being backlash adjustment or replacing gears with belt. The HEQ5 seems popular. I just bought one and it replaced an iOptron that arrived with defect. I would prefer a Losmandy mount but not in my budget. You were instrumental in my start in Astronomy by recommending the "Backyard Astronomer's Guide."

    • @edting
      @edting  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Keep in mind my sample size is not large, but the last three "5" series mounts within the club did not work. I owned two Sirius mounts; neither one worked. So that is five in a row. For all I know there are perfectly fine units out there but if it's my money I will not buy one.

      Ask them to point at an object and they are off by several degrees, or they point at the ground, or they spin round and round forever.
