      I've seen a couple crappy videos of how to do it and pretty sure you can do it better. So... Do it! Now please.
      Also, good job on this build. Pretty tight.

      @@ButtahDawgMcDouble this is a nickel plated brass shell
      it's black nickel if you couldn't tell
      and I bought it cheap, from flood it had fell.
      but I felt it was, naught the matter at all.
      twas the most beautiful drum that I'd ever saw,
      I thought it was needed by drummers and all.
      I found the sound so sweet in this snare
      the beautiful noise that rang through the air.
      I set off to work with such Grace and such care,
      cause the thought of it dying was to much to bare.
      I measured the butt plate and the throw off too,
      drilled it all out and made it anew.
      I made some scratches, but I hadn't knew,
      but the scratches were covered,
      and I got some snares too.
      and the snare was so great.
      it seemed that lady fate
      had brought it, wrought it, to me
      twas the most gorgeous snare that ever could be.
      why did I do this?

    I bought a gently-used Pork Pie copy of the Black Beauty for $100 about 10 years ago. Also 14” X 5.5”. Probably the best drum investment I’ve ever made. The drum sounds tremendous! It mikes well, cuts through well when needed, responds beautifully to ghost notes and...really, it does everything I’ve ever asked of it perfectly and is a beautiful beast. Thanks again, Billy!

      One of my old drummers had that same snare around the same time period too. I used to to borrow it all the time. Coated ambassador for the batter and a double wide snare set, and then I would crank it way up like I do on all my snares for playing really heavy music. It sounded so, so good.

      @Fiend S @Hans Grueber - I think a problem with that could be that the diametre of PVC pipes is measured on the inside (as opposed to the outside, with drum shells) and that it may be difficult to find fitting heads and rims!

    Great video ! That snare sounds awesome ! That obviously took a good amount of work to build it.
    Also , i really enjoy your demos because you don't play anything super complicated and we can actually hear the snares.
    So many other drummers demonstrate their stuff and they play super busy
    because they just want to show off their skills and we can't really hear how good the snares are. You are a true professional.
    And your playing is always excellent. Thanks for posting.

  • @RyanAlexanderBloom
    @RyanAlexanderBloom 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Just for reference, right now on eBay for just $258 including shipping you can get a used 6.5x14 nickel over brass DW snare. So while it’s fun to build drums, and that’s not to be overlooked, it’s not really any more economical than buying used drums. Yes this drum cost half of a typical newish real Black Beauty from Ludwig, and of course much less than a vintage one. But on the other hand, if you don’t own a drill press, you can buy a similar drum that’s also not a Ludwig but has the same basic design for a similar price. No disrespect to rdavidr for building this. It’s cool.

    Very nice! I've learned over building a few metal shelled drums myself that there's just not a lot you can do to them sonically (short of heads and ring control). A metal shelled drum is a metal shelled drum and all of them seem to have that same, ring-y characteristic.
    Visually is a whole different story & you've clearly and expertly shown this. Not only do you know where to get your parts, but the fit and finish is superb.
    I'm with Fiend S in his request for a PVC drum. Snare, tom, it doesn't matter. I'd love to see what a fabricating artist like yourself would do with an 8 or 10" slice of PVC.
    Great job on this one my drumming brother!

    I considered building a run of acrylic snares by buying a huge acrylic tube and cutting it into many pieces, but this video shows that the shell is just a drop in the budget bucket. The hardware costs a couple hundred bucks, which is why any decent snare is usually around $300 or more. You’re just paying slightly more than the hardware cost.

    • @TheWR4U
      @TheWR4U 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hint... buy el cheapo drums at flea markets, pawn shops, yard sales etc... A $20 5 piece-o-s set with dented heads and torn wraps can be a gold mine of lugs, lug screws, hoops etc...

    • @RyanAlexanderBloom
      @RyanAlexanderBloom 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Richard Marshall well yes. But you get cheapo lightweight hoops, bottom of the barrel lugs, barely functional strainers, etc. you’re not going to find tube lugs, cast hoops, or anything nice. I have a Yamaha 12 lug marching shell, but chances are low that my $20 drum set find will include 12 lug hoops. I see your point, but to build a snare out of junk gets you a junk snare. I’ve done it. It sounds pretty bad. Ordering parts like the above video is about as cheap as you can get for something you’d want to use and feel proud of.

    • @TheWR4U
      @TheWR4U 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RyanAlexanderBloom I have collected drums since 1974. I have classic ludwigs, pearls, tamas, yamahas, slingerlands, mapex, sonor, yaddah. Drums go bang or boom, cymbals chick or ting or crash. I have enjoyed and proudly played great drums and crappy drums without prejudice or regret, and shall continue to do so. YMMV.

    • @RyanAlexanderBloom
      @RyanAlexanderBloom 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Richard Marshall I’ve owned plenty of bad drums and just a few that sound good. I wouldn’t want to build drums from scratch that don’t at least stand a chance of being on the good side. That’s all I’m saying. And to get there you have to spend a couple hundred bucks. Like in this video. You can play whatever drums you want, but you don’t want to be selling custom drums made of garbage parts. That’s the point I’m making. Components matter a lot in snare drums. I loved the sound of a no-name brass pawn shop drum I had but the chrome peeled off the hoops, the lug inserts routinely tore out of the lug casings, and the only snare head I ever actually broke was on that drum. So i bought a Black Panther to replace it. The sound is actually better and it’s never given me trouble. So you see, every drum goes boom and most can be adjusted to sound good, but when it’s your #1 snare, it should work correctly in clutch situations.
