    Recycled vodka bottle into glasses 😊
    Uses 2 packs of bluetack, 50m of electrical tape, 8 cable ties, 6 sheets of assorted sandpaper, unnecessarily sacrificed piece of wood and unknown amount of electricity (at one point early on an hour was mentioned before he carried on) guess he didn't do CDT/woodworking at school, cos all that could've been done by hand with sandpaper + dowel rod/sanding block? (And the bluetack!)

      Actually there’s the tie a piece of cord to the bottle, make sure it’s even all around and pour alcohol on the cord and than light it and than let the flame burn the glass for a few minutes and than setting the glass a bath of water and it cuts it.
      After that sanding the glass manually with sand paper others have done it on TH-cam easier no glass cutter needed, no drill.

    As I recall, in the late 70's to early 80's there used to be an "as seen on TV" kit you could by that would let you do essentially the same thing. Making your own funky drinking glasses our of wine bottles was a thing back then, I guess. We always used jelly jars.

    The most critical part is the score line. I just spent 1 hour assembling some glass cutting kit from Temu and discovered that my square bottle isn't well accommodated. So now I am hoping the hot/cold technique will eventually work on the score line(s). And when I started all I wanted was a nice vase like thing to store green onions in the fridge. Live and Learn!

    Great glass cutting. Sand paper could be made with zirconium and use flame polish to finish. Flame polish is putting fire to the edge to melt it slightly to get a smooth finish that would not cut your lip. This is an interesting project - it is not about the cost. It is all about your enjoyment and pride of making something useful out of something that would be thrown out. It is a good conversation piece when people come over and use it.

      +Amanda Pierce nice idea but I think securing it on the drill like he did is much better . this way you can sand the inside of the bottle the same way . with the disc you can't . with the belt depends what size it is and can it fit inside the glass , and many people don;t have that sander . and if it fits after all it will be harder to sand it evenly from the inside . An adjustable bottle holder on the drill would be the best solution for that problem . but definitely with the bottle on the drill . not the other way around .

    It's certainly a different approach. Making a drill adapter so you can attach the glass and have the ability to move the object being sanded rather than the conventional method of holding the object still and moving the sand paper. I would use sanding discs on a drill or just my orbital sander and save a load of effort but your solution is ingenious.

      +BIll Georgoulakis The fact that he went through all the trouble of building a tool for the bottle blew my mind ... Why would you do it the easy way (Even just using the rounded wood piece in a drill with sandpaper stuck on with sticky spray would have been a better option)

    • @hellterminator
      @hellterminator 9 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      That was my first thought as well but there is an advantage to doing it this way: If you spin the glass, you're guaranteed that the top will be perfectly flat and leveled (think about it) whereas if you spin the sandpaper, the top of the glass may end up being slanted and “bumpy.”

    • @pitiponk1
      @pitiponk1 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +BIll Georgoulakis as +hellterminator said, plus in the video he does it on a soft surface. This way the bumps on the glass rim will naturally push into the sand paper and level themselves a lot easier. the only issue is actually holding the drill straight vertical. Could be easier with a drill mount for the first flattening round

    • @hellterminator
      @hellterminator 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      pitiponk1 That shouldn't be a problem. If you push on the drill it will have a tendency to level itself (because the glass is rotating). And even if you do hold it not perfectly straight, the worst that can happen is that the outer edge will be a tiny bit lower than the inner edge.

    • @billysgeo
      @billysgeo 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +hellterminator But in the video you can clearly see that the tool (the bottle holder for the drill chuck) he makes is imprecisely made and that makes for a "wobly" spinning and not perpendicular to the sand paper. I would still rather hold the glass down firmly and spin the paper (maybe a sandpaper wheel an an angle grinder...

LOL It's also comforting to see that I'm not the only person obsesses with zip ties. LOL The project, itself, seems cost-effective, if you want to have neato drinking glasses and like hands-on projects... However, those vodkas featured in your video (Absolut, Ctalpka, Belvedere) are not cheap in the USA. I'd have to have $200 in my pocket upon entering the liquor store if I wanted to buy three or four of those 750ml bottles. But the thrift store usually has neato bottles and vases that can just as easily be cut!

      George Drakakis
      I am sorry. At a sudden I didn't consider the international character of the internet. Here in Norway they are way expensive as it has not a wide spread usage but glasses are mass imported and not very expensive. That said, I understand the joy of mastering and I appreciate it.

      +George Drakakis in Romania the sand papers would cost around 10 lei (2 euro), a nice glass is 3-4 lei. Is worth doing this only if it's your hobby, but for someone who doesn't have a passion for this kind of things, even if he has the tools, the time and money, it's not worthed.

    I think if you flame polished the cut edge, it would save a lot of work. You make the cut, then instead of sanding, you use a torch, think propane or butane, not a flashlight, to sort of melt the edge. Run the reducing flame of the torch around the edge and it will smooth it right off, or it should anyway.

I started thinking that if we were all stranded on Gilligan's Island, I would love to have those drinking glasses. But I probably would still think the music is crappy. And to Bob Mac and all the other overly sensitive YTubers, I say you need to toughen up a bit and grow a thicker skin. Anytime anyone uploads a video, or comment, etc. in a public forum, you need to brace yourself for contrary opinions. I mean Bob Mac's comments are downright nasty and mean.
