Jaws is a 1975 American thriller film directed by Steven Spielberg, based on the 1974 novel by Peter Benchley. It stars Roy Scheider as police chief Martin Brody, who, with the help of a marine biologist (Richard Dreyfuss) and a professional shark hunter (Robert Shaw), hunts a man-eating great white shark that attacks beachgoers at a summer resort town. Murray Hamilton plays the mayor, and Lorraine Gary portrays Brody's wife. The screenplay is credited to Benchley, who wrote the first drafts, and actor-writer Carl Gottlieb, who rewrote the script during principal photography.
Shot mostly on location at Martha's Vineyard in Massachusetts, Jaws was the first major motion picture to be shot on the ocean and consequently had a troubled production, going over budget and schedule. As the art department's mechanical sharks often malfunctioned, Spielberg decided to mostly suggest the shark's presence, employing an ominous and minimalist theme created by composer John Williams to indicate its impending appearances. Spielberg and others have compared this suggestive approach to that of director Alfred Hitchcock. Universal Pictures' release of the film to over 450 screens was an exceptionally wide release for a major studio picture at the time, and it was accompanied by an extensive marketing campaign that heavily emphasized television spots and tie-in merchandise.
Regarded as a watershed moment in motion picture history, Jaws was the prototypical summer blockbuster and won several awards for its music and editing. It was the highest-grossing film of all time until the release of Star Wars two years later; both films were pivotal in establishing the modern Hollywood business model, which pursues high box-office returns from action and adventure films with simple high-concept premises, released during the summer in thousands of theaters and advertised heavily. Jaws was followed by three sequels (none of which involved Spielberg or Benchley) and many imitative thrillers. In 2001, the Library of Congress selected it for preservation in the United States National Film Registry.

Yeah, the scene when they are examining Ben Gardner’s beat-up fishing boat, and Hooper pulls a shark tooth the size of a shot glass out of the hole in the hull -- just as Ben Gardner’s mutilated head suddenly appears -- is one of the greatest jump-scares of all time!

The long delay between Brody seeing the shark for the first time and telling Quint "You're going to need a bigger boat" was entirely to accommodate the screams and hubbub in movie theaters at the surprise and shock reveal. It was timed to the second to achieve the greatest impact, while also providing something on screen that would keep the attention of the audience while the screams died down.

I saw this when it was released in the summer of 1975. JAWS is considered to be the first summer blockbuster film. It broke all kinds of records and started a marketing merchandise frenzy - T-shirts, bedsheets, lunchboxes, posters - you name it. Imagine a dark theater with hundreds of screaming people every time you sensed that shark coming with the help of John Williams’ spectacular soundtrack! It was so much fun! Love watching young people enjoy and jump out of their skins at the same scenes we all jumped out of our skins at 49 years ago! It’s become a timeless summer classic.

Cooper went in the water to check out Ben gardner's boat because he had top rated radar that didn't show anything big coming at them for over a a few miles, at least, so he knew it was safe. He didn't expect Ben gardner's amputated head to come out of the hull, though.

But the fact we survive so many attacks even against great whites, an animal that can rip us in half in 2 seconds. We should never survive an attack from one, so it shows how they really don't like our taste. It's said we're too bony, and they're looking for 600-1000 pound balls of fat and muscle in seals and shit, and that the calories from us is not enough for the energy they spend.

If sharks don't like the taste of people, that U.S.S. Indianapolis story would require some more explanation. Know what I mean? Sharks aren't picky. They bite and swim around, waiting for their prey to die. Then, they finish off the carcass. Usually, when people get bit, someone pulls them out of the water while the shark's waiting for their meal to stop moving.

There is a good example of foreshadowing in this movie that everyone seems to miss: when Chief Brody is looking through books about sharks, researching the subject, while thumbing through the books, he comes across a photo of a giant shark with a compressed air tank from a diver in its mouth. Of course, this comes full circle at the end of the movie when Brody destroys the shark by shooting the compressed air tank in its jaws.

    1. Jaws was the first "Summer Blockbuster".
    2. Boy Scouts don't need to do the mile swim to get their merit badge. It's an accomplishment all its own.
    3. Lee Fierro/Mrs. Kentner actually slapped Roy Scheider. It took 17 takes. Once was so hard it knocked his glasses off.
    4. The jump scare at Ben Gardner's boat was put in on purpose by Spielberg because they were having problems with the shark "Bruce" and his appearance was delayed, and the movie needed something earlier. Works every time.🤣🤣
    5. IRL Dreyfuss and Shaw didn't get along, so Spielberg used the animosity to fuel their feud onscreen.
    6. The boy that said, "He made me do it' is now the Police Chief of the town where this movie was filmed.
    7. Hooper was wrong. The fish that hit the line was "our fish".
    8. To me the best scene framing work was the pullback to the vandalized Welcome sign.
    9. Goof: An animal that large couldn't hit the side of the boat as rapidly as it did UNDER WATER.
    10. I suspect Quint's story about the Indy gave him PTSD flashbacks and contributed to his behavior after he told the Indianapolis story. It' personal.
    11. I was in the Navy, and we were instructed to go for the eyes when confronting a shark.
    12. Aside from the swimming pool used in the Ben Gardner boat scenes, all of the shipboard scenes were filmed entirely at sea,
    13. In the book not only does Hooper die but he was also having an affair with Mrs. Brody.
    14. JAWS II is the only other one worth watching. It revolves around the Brody kids and their friends. Including the mayor's son.
15 The third one was so bad that Scheider read the script and said NO.

Shark attacks on humans are rare, but there are some steps you can take to reduce your risk of being bitten:
    Avoid certain times
Don't swim at dawn, dusk, or in the dark when sharks are most active. Also avoid swimming right after a storm.
    Avoid certain areas
Stay close to shore and avoid murky water, deep channels, and waters with known discharges or sewage. Also avoid areas where people are fishing, especially if there are signs of baitfish or feeding activity, like diving seabirds.
    Avoid certain behaviors
Don't swim if you're bleeding from an open wound or menstruating, as sharks can smell blood. Also avoid harassing or trying to touch sharks, and don't wear shiny jewelry or bright colors, as they can resemble fish scales or shark prey.
    Be aware
Look for signs that a shark might be near, such as circling birds, splashing water, or feeding seals and dolphins. If you do see a shark, try to keep it in sight and slowly swim backwards towards shallow water. You can also use an electrical pulse device (ESD) to repel the shark.

10:44 you’re not too far off, honestly. Most shark attacks are a case of mistaken identity, smelling blood in the water, thrashing in the water when panicking, and the shark trying to see if you’re food (since sharks don’t have hands, they literally only have their mouths and teeth to figure things out)

My first encounter with Jaws wasn't the movie. It was the theme park ride at Universal Studios when I was about 4-5 years old. I was taller so I could get on some of the more adult rides but I happened to be in the exact seat where Jaws comes out of the water for the big jump scare. I must've leapt across the whole boat. lol. The movie wasn't really that scary compared to having the crap scared out of me when I was really young on the ride.

Remarkably, Quint’s speech about the sinking of the USS Indianapolis is a historical fact. It really happened! His vivid description of the tragedy that resulted is one of the most epic monologues in cinematic history, and is the key to his character and his obsession with killing sharks. He smashed the radio not only because he wanted to secure the bounty and reward for killing the Great White, which is strictly a secondary consideration for him, but rather because he wanted revenge - or perhaps personal redemption - for his horrific experience, which he can only achieve by killing the man-eating shark himself.

Such a great movie and a fantastic cast. Love your reactions, man!
Three bits of trivia about Jaws:
    1) The girl that gets got at the beginning was attached to a rope being pulled by divers under the water. She didnt know when they would pull her under or how they would pull her so some of those screams are real surprise/fear.
    2) the shark was originally going to be on screen much more, but they had a lot of problems with the shark prop/animitronic malfunctioning and falling apart in the water. Personally I think its much scarier seeing it less.
    3) when John Williams (the composer) first had Spielburg listen to the shark theme (Buh, Dum), Spielburg burst out laughing and said something along the lines of "That's funny. What did you really come up with?" John had to convince him that the simple two note theme would work lol.
You should definately check out the movies "Cube" and "Fallen". Two very good, very underappreciated movies.

Well the shark was kept hidden by design in the first half of the film. Bruce was never scheduled to be used until filming went out to sea for the Orca based scenes in July 1974. The beach scenes were filmed in May and June. Bruce was a massive contraption and could never have been used in the 3ft to 4ft shallow water where they filmed the beach attacks, so it was never planned to be used.
Spielberg was already a suspense director, as Duel and Something Evil shows. He was not a monster movie director.
The shark went wrong all through July and August out at sea, and they didn't get the shots they wanted until September.
The first half of the film was shot pretty much on schedule though. It's become a myth, due to confusing recollections in some documentaries, that the shark was planned to be used and seen all through the movie. That was not the case at all. Production designer Joe Alves said they eventually got all, or nearly all, of the shark shots they planned.

Great white sharks (Carcharodon carcharias) are one of the most feared predators in the ocean due to their size and reputation. However, there has been much scientific research conducted to try to understand their feeding habits. So, how often does a great white shark eat? To answer this question, it is important to understand the factors that influence their feeding habits, such as their size, species of prey, and habitat. Studies have shown that great white sharks typically feed every few days, but the amount and frequency of their meals can vary. For example, larger sharks tend to feed less frequently than smaller sharks and prefer different types of prey. Additionally, their habitat may also have an effect on their feeding habits. By understanding the various factors that influence a great white shark’s diet, we can gain insight into how often they eat.
Great white sharks are known to prey on humans, as well as other animals. Great white rhinoceroses are frequently regarded as eating enormous quantities of food every day due to their large body size and weight. It’s a question that should be asked in depth because it involves the amount of food they consume. A great white shark can weigh up to 1500 to 2500 pounds, according to estimates, and its maximum weight can reach 5000 pounds. According to observations, sharks typically consume between 0.5 and 3% of their body weight in the course of hunting.
They must wait a few days between meals in order for their bodies to digest the food, The great white shark is the world’s most lethal shark, with no rival in terms of hunting capabilities. well expect for Killer Whales, but let's stick to the sharks here.
Their powerful jaws allow them to decimate any sea creature they come into contact with. Humans, on the other hand, are not their favorite food source. White pointers prefer marine mammals with a high protein content.
As apex predators, sharks play an important role in the ecosystem by maintaining the species below them in the food chain and serving as an indicator for ocean health. They help remove the weak and the sick as well as keeping the balance with competitors helping to ensure species diversity.
Without sharks as apex predators, the entire ocean ecosystem could fall out of balance. They not only maintain the species below them in the food chain, but also indirectly maintain seagrass and coral reef habitats.

23:39 - Michael was frozen with fear and his remaining still probably saved his life. If he tried to swim away, the Sharks hunting instincts would've kicked in and he would've gone after him. Plus no human can outswim a shark

$3,000 bounty and $10,000 (What Quin was asking for) back when this film was released would be $15+k and $60k today. I remember seeing ads for cars for around 4k back then. I'd have been on those boats hunting for that dang shark for 15+K ! I miss the films where CGI wasn't possible leaving a lot up to your imagination.

Most reactors misunderstand the issue of closing the beaches vs keeping them open for tourism. Its less about greed and more about survival.
Amity presumably has no other industry but tourism and retail. They depend on the summer season to make enough money to last all year. When that lady yells, "24 hours is like three weeks!"', she isn't exaggerating.
As for the Mayor, he is responsable for public safety, but he's also responsable to keep the town running. It would be career suicide if he closed the beaches, even if its the right thing to do.
He isn't evil, he's in denial. He wants to believe they caught the right shark and the whole crisis was a freak event that would never happen again.
Its when he's in the hospital, shaking like a leaf, that it finally hits him.
    Great reaction. I enjoyed it.

Hotel rooms were purchased, and the city more or less was packed with tourists. There was no need for him to encourage beach-goers to enter the water.

It's typical politics and about $...bottom line. Their entire year of survival is making bank during the tourist season...ppl are selfish, esp when the almighty dollar is involved, but certainly when you need to pay your mortgage in the winter and not go into foreclosure and eat, lol. I mean, no one was wanting to risk lives...but the chief was caught between wanting to do the right thing, which went against the residents, and their seasonal income, and the Mayor is an elected position...police chief is a hired position, mayor runs the town, the police chiefs boss...typical government structure...chief has to do what the mayor says, or he gets fired, and the mayor is elected by the ppl...just is what it is, even in the town I live in. It's the way the world turns, in Jaws, and daily life as you know it....this entire thing we live in is a machine about $, and at some point in life, you will realize it's not about you, aside from being the grease that makes the wheels turn, and not just you, but all of us. ALWAYS follow the money, and end of the day, it's every man for themselves.
