(Pun noted by the way. :-) I have watched a few of these and have always wondered, why didn't you make a unicycle with a vertical chain and a gearing system, so that you could coast sometimes? The idea of a direct pedal drive is unimaginable for what that would do to one's knees. Guess I must be mistaken on that, but nevertheless. Please invent said unicycle, and next time you'll set a speed record. (Or, have you sworn to never ride one again? I could see that reasoning too, after this trip.)

Truckloads of kudos for your ability to tough it out in Death Valley, Ed. Lucky for me I was in a car and all the comforts of home were only hours away.
What you say about the simplicity of desert cycling really struck a chord with me. We cycled across the Nullarbor a few years ago and that was what I loved about it. I know you crossed the Nullarbor too, so I'm sure you'll agree.

Near death experiences make beer taste better, and life more vibrant there after. Big wall climbing, long cycle touring, epic backpacking trips just help reset your brain's baseline so you can return to enjoying much of the rest of life in proper context for a while.
I think theres something powerful in this episode. The feeling of accomplishment of getting through something difficult is a feeling you will most likely chase the rest of your life. Its an overwhelmingly good feeling and something we all need to experience.
Only a foreigner or a glutton for punishment would’ve chosen such a challenging and brutal path out of the west coast. You clearly had to dig deep within to withstand the brutal sun and high winds. Little fun info: Ed talks about walking on the left to better see cars coming ahead. Here in Germany, every pedestrian has to walk on the left side outside of any city, town or village by law, if there is no sidewalk. I assume this law exists because of this situation, actually seeing the traffic on your side.
I have to say you are one determined human and i love watching your videos, i hold the title of being the first person to unicycle all around Buckingham Palacel (in 1998 for Prince Charles 50th Birthday, i learned to unicycle 30 years ago in a disused granite quarry, on dec 5th 1989 i had an accident and fell off a 250ft cliff (not while riding) , 9 months later i got back on a unicycle, my doctors and physiotherapists were gobsmacked as i had broken my back and was told i may never walk again. Determination, like you i had it, ive now spent the last 28 years teaching unicycling and reckon ive taught over 150.000 people how to do it zo far.
Nice one Ed, you're a real inspiration. In June I'll be taking my two wheeled bike (I did buy a uni, but can't for the life of me ride it) from Plymouth to Land's End and back.
