  • "Im not gonna say the clayback." - Clay
"Clay has been busting huge layback throwtails more and more in the last few years. We at Westside pride thought it would be interesting to go through all of our footage from as far back as 2003 to compile those clips. It ended up taking a a couple month of our lives there where so many of them.
They are in chronological order and this edit shows the progression of this patented Marzo move with his crazy recovery skills.
Enjoy "the Evolution of the Clayback"

If there was only points for having style - but how do you want to quantify that? Clay would win any contest if it was so. Stylewise... a league of its own.

If you just saw the frame at 4.16 you'd definitely think he was bailing!

I hear that sometimes Clay Marzo uses his board to surf and that on those rare occasions his go to wax is titebond.

His wax must be atleast to the nose of his board, clay just shreds.

Idk. It looks sloppy to me. Like he fell, then he rides the white water on his back to get back on his feet. He looses all momentum and fights to stand up after the wave is dead.

Edmund Snyder Edmund Snyder naaaah, his layback is more committed than anything ive ever seen, he doesnt torque his body and lets his legs do all the work and supposedly just by doing that you are sure to fall of your board. clay also hits the lip when he does a layback thats why after the waves seems to crumble. when your doing a normal layback one of your hands is deep in the water thus creating a drag of some sort and also keeping the body in a state of allignment and by using the core surfers can recover from the layback and also because they torque there body and if you do that your body immediately will torque itself to the proper position. and normally laybacks happen before the lip is created. john johns layback are almost the same as clay except that john john has a cleaner outcome but if you see some of john john vids his laybacks are almost like clays, where his foot is on the board but his body is on the white water. i mean who throws the tail of their board in a layback?!
