  • A group called the "Green Mining Model Project" is well on on their way to making West Virginia the lavender capitol of the United States. They are growing the crop on top of reclaimed mine sites. Check out how they do it, and see what a huge market there is for lavender.

Funny I used to have a small lavender farm in WV. WV Agriculture wouldn't give me any assistance even though I was a single mom living in poverty. I sold all over the world everywhere BUT WV through phone modem internet, even had tons of people wanting to visit, but since I had no parking and it was grown on a steep hill I didn't feel it was a safe place for people to visit. I would have been happy to assist in this project or join it. Tiny houses or temp seasonal shelters would be good for those isolated places ie they should have given those people their 2 acres of land to tend to the Lavender that was contractually promised to them. I also made lavender oil and hydrosol. Grass is the killer of Lavender the first 2 years, and you must trim lavender back at least once if not twice a year. I also grew and sold tons of herbs even donated and planted them at the youth museum, but the local garden club that wouldn't let me join ( I wasn't snotty enough or well enough connected), went in and did a little spoofing up a few years later took full credit for the $100's of dollars of plants I donated, even had write ups with pictures in the news. I also illustrated the old town at the coal mine exhibit had prints selling there as well, they refused to pay me after they sold them, even though I was struggling with two kids, than to make matters worse they had an artist named "goode' or something like that, take off my signature and copy write notice and slapped it on the front of the advertising sign with out my permission and give her credit for illustrating it, yea right, can she produce the original? can she even illustrate like that? I can. . I can tell you what went wrong with this project, those that participated in it and got screwed and the ones doing the physical labor where not from wealthy or powerful families in WV. WV is my heart but are not for the people and will walk all over those honest hard working ones trying to make a living, WV destroys their own people. adding I also ended up in the "Who's who of American Women" Despite WV politics.

Hello I was wondering if you continued selling lavender online today. Hope all is well.

@@SIGNATURESOUNDZ I don't unfortunately, because of back injuries and my orders got to be too many I wasn't able to keep up. I ended up selling the land. It would have been nice to have had a good support system in place. Basically it can be done, Just don't count on anything in WV backing you up at. I even had to fight with the lady at the courthouse to get a business license so I could get a tax ID. She was only a clerk and it was her job to give you the form and to file... nothing else. Because of politics some insane people will try to dictate over you. That shouldn't be a problem anymore with forms etc on line. Than years later the WV. Dept. of Agriculture started calling me asking for my help!!!. It was all very strange. Even after all that strangeness I still love WV.

I was wondering if you could grow lavender in the red clay soil without problems.

@@SIGNATURESOUNDZ As long as it isn't water logged or water sits on top of the soil. For each plant I would amend the soil in each hole, bone meal is also a benefit, compost mixed in with the native soil. After I would use compost or leaf litter as a mulch, no pine needles. If you are growing in large amounts or commercially I would test soil first. Of course if you are in West Virginia and want different types of Lavender, than pick a southern exposed hill to grow so it will survive through harsh winter. Not all Lavender is winter hardy and sun exposure through the winter is extremely important. Be ready with young plants in spring to replace any that may not have made it.

As long as you have a place facing the sun in winter, you can esp. a south facing hill, the bee's love it.
