Im white and grew up on reggae but now I'm just embarrassed by it. I didn't realise it wasn't meant for me. Now im older my kids have never heard a reggae song.
Imitation is the most sincere form of flattery. My favorite genre is soul, and my favorite soul bands have both black and white members. Who cares what they look like? Just enjoy the music, people.
It’s also the easiest path to exploitation, particularly where art is concerned. Think of things from dual perspectives, not just with rose colored glasses on...
Honestly, music in America will go this way. It's unfortunate but there isn't always some grand scheme that it happens. Maybe those white trustafarians grew up in a mostly white school where the few blacks didn't get into reggae or music. So when they all start jamming and growing as a band and they stick together it may very well be that they don't know any black reggae musicians. Honestly, a lot of kids are driven into hip hop and electronic... Black or white. Certainly it's hard to be the original authentic reggae group when your parents are maybe rich white. But you can't blame them for being born. But if they feel your music and culture and give credit to it, be proud. Hip hop is much the same. As long as there is due credit there really is not such thing as cultural appropriation bc culture is all about enjoying, learning, borrowing, integrating, creating. It might be fake or inauthentic, but it isn't wrong. I'm Taiwanese and I can cook dope Filipino food.... In the end both cuisines borrow heavily from many other influences. Must I have a Filipino to bless it to be authentic... Maybe, but must I have one to bless it for it to taste good....nope.
People don't get mad at parrots. They find them cute, even if the parrot gets the laugh, the attention and the treats, but they don't. Treat parrots like parrots.
No such thing as appropriation. Stop being smug and intolerant. It's all appreciation and no group is exempt. Stop acting like your group is something special. However, I do concede that many Black originators in music were exploited and their descendants should be paid royalties as a result. This isn't the same is reparations though, which is just ridiculous. don't get that twisted.
@@darrickmalloy6909 Yes, absolutely. The amount that would need to be paid out in reparations, would bankrupt your country. A country that's already trillions in debt. From an economical standpoint, it would be suicide. So rather than beg like a pauper, get your money up the legal way. Work hard like every other race does. Study and gain knowledge, intelligence and skills people are willing to pay for. Your Black skin colour is the best skin tone to be in right now. All the privileges in the world are afforded to Black people. Especially Black women, who are the most entitled, protected and privileged group in the Western world. A Black woman can go wherever, do whatever and say whatever she wants and everyone will acquiesce. So there are literally no excuses. Stop listening to nightmarish folktales about how Black people are oppressed. This hasn't been remotely true for decades. A Black person is the only group who can racially stereotype and profile another, with impunity. No one else can call a white person "cr****r" and get away with it. So even racism is afforded to Black people now and you want reparations on top of that? That is most certainly ridiculous.
Facts are, at least half the bands calling themselves reggae right now need to quit today, because they are doing an injustace to themselves and the sacntity of the music. If your heart does not beat for Africa - what you play is not reggae
Black folks saying white folks can't or shouldn't make what they consider their music is no different than white folks back on the day saying Black folks can't or shouldn't use their water fountain. No matter how you attempt to dress it up it's the same energy.
Sorry appropriation apologists, authenticity matters. There have been performers of all stripes and all genres who were very talented. But talent doesn't beget authenticity.
I'm white BTW I grew up listening to John Holt,Gregory Isaacs, Sister Nancy, Yellowman and of course Bob Marley and many others... it's always disgusted me when I see whites with dreadlocks singing their own reggae and don't know a dam thing about true reggae. The reggae now is straight-up Blasphemous... back then it was spiritual and it was about Jah now it is disgusting talks about sex in all kinds of lame stuff. I'm sorry I can't put it all into words right now but I just literally hate it.
Good music comes from the soul not from the color of your skin. What color is your soul? Leave race, culture and mindset out of it. No human being is gifted a soul that is any one color. How about unity, peace, positive vibrations? You can write songs about anything you want. It's the listener who decides its value. When you separate race and call it culture, you separate the people. We are one people when it comes down to it. The history has been written. Leave it in the past and move on to a united people where we can make a world without color. West African music will always be alive in west Africa. And Tibetan throat singing in Tibet... those places will decide to carry on tradition. You can do it anywhere if you want. But we need to stop hating on people who are influenced by the world's music. Its the soul that vibrates with that frequency and then puts those vibes back out into the universe, Not how much Melanin the have. The artists that focus on where you are from or your race need to elevate their mindset because this world is sick of people who carry the trauma over from ancestors. The world in dis-ease is diseased... We have all learned about the tragic past of the African slave trade. British hierarchy and aristocrats manipulated the masses into believing that slaves were less than human. Songs that sparked genre after genre were created in their pain. The legacy is not lost and is written about and sung about and designed about throughout. If you want to bring attention to anything, bring attention to One love, peace, unity, and raise your souls vibration to make this world a better one to live in. Not fight your brothers and sisters for supremacy and power or devide by race because it never ends in unity and peace. I don't know about you but I don't care what color you are. If you do... then you're a racist.
Don’t care what nobody say in these comments or what the brother said in the video, they take what us black folks do and imitate it, they obsess over us while at the end still hate us. Shit makes no sense. Even Backtracking a bit to when best reggae band nomination went to a all white reggae band. But that’s normal and cool to some ppl even some of my black ppl. None of those kids grow up like kids from Jamaica it’s way different. I have more respect for guys like Alborosie who actually moved to Jamaica to do his music. Bob Marley spoke perfect English when he sing patois is used more in Danchall or early singjay vs reggae unless you talk Eek a mouse who made up his own language any way. I could probably school you on reggae I like the early stuff especially the boogie style that’s is the foundation for Reggae music.
@@992ras first of all all races in the past have committed genocides and murders and enslaved their own people, the first ever civilization had slaves and they were all black, and again all races in the past have done horrible things, pointing out only one race for the bad stuff they did and acting like no other race has done stuff like that or worse is pure ignorance and hypocrisy, second of all not everyone white kid in Cali grew up rich you do know there’s many poor white people as well in the country right? Also you can’t hold people today accountable for the actions of those in the past, and just cus someone doesn’t grow up poor doesn’t mean they can’t experience reggae music and getting into the culture, look at all the marleys, they didn’t grow up poor now because of bob and they all grew up in the states in Florida and Cali, so are they now not allowed to participate? Your speaking with pure hypocrisy and ignorance, you just don’t like seeing white skinned people do something cus your ignorant, we all root back to the first ever humans that originated in Africa, we only changed over time due to adapting to our environment the more we stepped out of Africa, but the lineage of human life all traces back to those first humans, and that roots back to the creation of earth and then to the creation of the sun and the Milky Way galaxy and then all the way back to the creation of the universe, we are all one we are all part of life, just cus ur white or black doesn’t matter it’s about your soul and what you connect to and over all it’s about good vs evil, your saying you’d school me on stuff, like as if we are children arguing, grow up and get real, your ignorant af and hypocritical especially cus again we all root back to the first humans which is where all of everything for us roots to including music, also Rasta don’t really have anything to do with Janice either if you want to get technical but Rasta has to do with everywhere tbh especially now more than ever but if you wanna get technical Rasta is African Tafari comes from Ethiopia, you would like the Cali reggae if they had the accent but since they don’t you think it’s cringe it’s pure hypocrisy
who's not recognizing bob marley? he has 3 inductions into the hall of fame. dub artists like scientist are far more overdue for credit in the evolution of music and production. i also find it funny that the police are almost always forgotten in the white reggae convo.
Yh most ppl think Marley when reggae is mentioned & have a single clue as to any other reggae artist.
@Ras Psalm CiviliNation7 what a name to call the band
@raspsalmcivilination776 police in Helicopters, call the Police all great songs with the word police in it I’m pretty sure there’s more but those ones I can think right of my head

He was all cap 🧢 on that. Why does West Africans follow and copy black Americans music for almost a hundred years now and not the opposite.
@ashley kim call what what you will - but this is the response from the study group. Everywhere I turn there’s a book or article about Black America and it’s creepy. You got something to say, and so do I. And yeah I judge. I condemn. I retort. I fight back. What ?
Im white and grew up on reggae but now I'm just embarrassed by it.
I didn't realise it wasn't meant for me.
Now im older my kids have never heard a reggae song.
Music crossover groups is great. What’s the problem.? Just enjoy the Music.
No.
@@williamk6605 Why? You mad that Reggae is suffering from the "Eminem" affect.........?
Imitation is the most sincere form of flattery. My favorite genre is soul, and my favorite soul bands have both black and white members. Who cares what they look like? Just enjoy the music, people.
You are either white or just sorry lol
It’s also the easiest path to exploitation, particularly where art is concerned. Think of things from dual perspectives, not just with rose colored glasses on...
@Far7rom From now on don't touch or go near ANYTHING pioneered and invented by Europeans. See how long you last.
What is your favorite soul band?
'' ... that mediocrity can pay to greatness'', why people always forget the second part.
People from the US talking about the global state of reggae not knowing anything about reggae.
One thing we know is it ain’t white
No one made an actual cohesive point throughout the whole video. It’s a bunch of “well I don’t like the idea of it” “but actually sometimes it’s ok”…
The only white artist I listen to is Gentleman. This music has Great Meaning, Word Sound Power. Vaughn Benjamin the True Teacher Zeen.
@Far7rom I'm not sure I follow. So, they are bound to not play reggae for this reason? I'm talking about as long as they give due credit.
What they were saying is black bands weren't even allowed on that platform. Thats the hit right there. Now what do you call that.
Went to cali vibes they had the rastas stage in the corner but the Caucasian reggae had the big stage
Ridiculous. Really? Lol1😝
