- Liverpool star Naby Keita was one of the best players in the Bundesliga. The € 55 million move to Premier League club Liverpool in 2018 made him the most expensive African player in history. But before he joined Jürgen Klopp at the Kop, Naby Keita was sure to light up the Bundesliga once again with Leipzig. We travelled to his roots in Conakry, Guinea to talk to the people who know him best and find out why he's so good.

Why does everyone refer to him as African, like Africa is a country, refer to him by his nationality, not what continent he's from, you don't call Ronaldo European, or Messi South American, so why you call keita african

Africa has been used and abused from outside and within for so long (colonial abuse, civil war, democratic rights abuse etc lack of opportunity generally) , I believe the response has been to develop a collective identity, and desire for any and all from the continent to do well.
Primarily because AFRICANS refer to Africans that way. As Mark correctly points out, there is more of a "collective identity" in Africa than in most other places, though you might see the same thing from Oceania if Fiji and Samoa and Kiribati started churning out the occasional world class footballer.
Remember at the 2010 World Cup Finals in South Africa, how the South African fans rallied behind Ghana as the last African team left in the tournament? Even in this video, Keita's own father reflects this view.
There are, by comparison, so few elite African footballers, that the elite ones tend to be adopted & supported by a large number of Africans, irrespective of country of birth. When there are elite players from basically every African country, you'll see the references become more national rather than continental.

The problem isn't the scouting system. The problems are protectionist laws prohibiting European teams from having x amount of non-EU-players in their teams. There are of course pros and cons in regards to this but yes, I believe that to be the main reason.

Brazilian players have just better media presence but West Africa has the best soccer players on earth. All those black French players are from West Africa. Mane, Keita, Yaya Toure, Gana Gueye, Balde-Keita, Kouyate, Drogba, Diouf, Fadiga...and so on. We are very gifted in football talents. We just lack infrastructures to develop our youth. Thank God our players are now departing for Europe at a young age to finish their formation. Believe the cream of the crop is not even known to the public because they lacked the means to play soccer. Viva West Africa! Senegal will win this WC for all.

All African parents know is go to school, they don"t believe in talent. Now am a victim of that. If only they would"ve allow me play football, today I would"ve been playing at a big club in Europe. A Catholic priest wanted wanted to take me to Italy when I was only Fourteen because my talent was so exception. But my grandmother insisted that I stay and go to school. More besides she said she could not give me away to anyone at that early age. I received punishment so many times for playing football, so i had no other choice than to quit.
