    My boss uses the steel version of this lock on his trailers and someone came one night with a pipe wrench and twisted the lock until it just broke the little loops off the trailer door and they took all the mowers and shit. We also had a ball hitch lock but they just unbolted the trailer's tongue and then bolted a new one on and drove away with the trailer. Another time we were doing someone's property and we were all in the backyard and the supervisor left the truck running with the doors open and windows down and the whole truck and trailer were stolen with all of our phones and backpacks still inside it. I think I need a new job.

    What if we sent you a "real steel" lock for you to test out the idea of getting the spring pins to come out with some sort of a hammer technique. We also use a spring pin, but nothing as crummy as what you see there from Master/American. Our pins are a stainless steel rolled pin that is pretty close to solid (but obviously not solid). I think the viewers would be interested... what do you think?

    • @lockpickinglawyer

      I'm definitely happy to try, but if the pins are beefier that the ones in this AL, then I'm skeptical that I'd succeed. I give myself less than even odds on the AL... the pins are thin, but still tempered steel! On a better build lock, my chances are probably slim.

    I found an unbranded lock like this at menards for $10 but it appears to be much sturdier. It's milled out of something magnetic with a 3/8 inch shackle and has two solid pins to lock it in place. It came with a 6 pin core having several spools and I haven't been able to pick it yet. I bought it for practice because I figured it would be easy for a beginner lol.

      Sounds like the body is mild steel. Try scratching it with a file: If the file bites in and cuts the metal easily it's a soft steel (therefore probably mild) and if it skates over the surface and has difficulty biting in it's hardened steel.

      He hasn't been able to get into the Bowley locks yet. IMHO the easiest way through one of them is to go through a wall or completely break down a door.
      BTW people if you are relying on a lock that you think is secure think about the next point in the system, the locks are generally hooked into a plate that has 1/2 inch long screws into a piece of 3/4 inch pine door frame. That is the next weak point pull those little screws out and get some that are long enough to go ALL the way into the stud behind the door and are thick enough to put up some resistance. That means you probably need to put one under the plate as well. You also need to pull out at least one screw in each side of each hinge and replace it with a 3 inch on the door side and something long enough to get into the stud on the frame side. Again those screws are 1/2 inch into a piece of 3/4 inch pine on most modern construction over the last 50 years.
      Securing something is always about looking for the next weak point in the system.

      a good design would be a tough lock with a barrel with an extra mechanism that detects picks and jams them in the lock,a key never gets the pin sequence wrong so the minute that happens dead pins fire out and jam anything in place.

      A blow torch flame isn't particularly bright though, easily drowned out by other lights in the kinds of places that you'd see these puck locks, same goes for the noise, is it a blow torch, or an HVAC blower kicking on? A drill on the other hand, that's a more distinct sound.

      Acetylene torches are for much more than soldering and brazing.. The HVAC torch handles normally fit CUTTING torch heads. They are referred to as combination torches..
      Against a torch only a stainless steel lock body males cutting inconvenient. (ceramic inserts would help it live longer) would offer some delay, and there is a little known method of cutting stainless with a torch called "flux cutting" (which doesn't use flux, I found it in an old Oxweld acetylene welding book. You can feed ordinary steel rod into the area you wish to cut so the preheat flame melts both then when you hit the cutting oxygen valve they blend producing a cut. I'll give that a shot on some scrap one day.

    I'm 7 months late, but you could shave some of time off this by using MAPP gas instead of standard propane. It burns a few hundred degrees hotter. But use it in well ventilated area it produces carbon monoxide instead of CO2.

    • @lockpickinglawyer
      @lockpickinglawyer  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I doubt it. It has the flame temp, but I doubt it's capable of delivering heat faster than this massive lock can dissipate it. I'd guess it would reach an temp equilibrium somewhere south of the melting point.

    • @CharlesStrain-sw1dq
      @CharlesStrain-sw1dq 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      What type of torch tip did you use?? And propane/mapp?? Just to get a better idea cause you light the thing with an ignitor for an actual oxyacetylene cutting torch... Could you imagine had you been using an actual cutting torch. Be like falling asleep with a candle burning and waking up and there is just a big puddle/mess..

  • @ThePrufessa
    @ThePrufessa ปีที่แล้ว

    Another thing to consider is the steel hasp it sits in would also absorb a lot of the heat before the lock gets up to temp.

  • @trysnouveau8626

    Your torch can be used more efficiently. The hottest part of the flame is the very tip. Hold it further away from your target

    Most Locks like my father used to tell me only keep the honest people out. The other thing that most of these videos overlook or rarely talk about is the hasp, loop, chin Etc... you are attaching your lock to which is the next likely place thieves try to brake if they can't brake or pick the lock.

    Puck locks are usually placed on bar locks for enclosed trailers. They can angle grind the bar lock in less than 2 mins with no skill. Most angle grinders are battery operated these days. They don't even need an extension cord or power outlet. $60 at home depot and they can steal most of your stuff in a few minutes. The 2nd amendment is beautiful!!!

  • @Whyyyyyy
    @Whyyyyyy 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Y'know, I don't love that it's made of zinc but I wonder if you've accidentally been unfair to it in this case. In use it is going to be likely resting in a steel hasp and against a steel door which is going to offer a much larger contact area, especially against the weak spot on the back that this attack targeted, than the tiny points of contact provided by the vice and therefore the effectively unlimited thermal mass of the door and hasp is going to come into play. I'd be curious if it's enough to make this attack significantly slower or even impractical. I know I've had soldering become impossible because of simple improper heatsink placement.

    So which is faster the noisy torch or quiet picking? Also let’s not forget if you possess the knowledge of where to torch the lock you’re clearly savvy enough to pick it. If it’s cost the torch and bottle is by far more costly then a pick but the skill to use a torch is by far less but then again you’re assuming either they will get lucky and find the weak spot or be savvy and if savvy as already stated they could pick it. After seeing this (btw awesome to watch) I feel yes the quality is low but so is the cost and unless you’re serious about security and up the core to something formidable then upping the body makes little sense to me.
    I so appreciate your videos, each and everyone is outstanding! My fav for sure was coq and beaver vid OMG have I had a blast playing with that video. Keep up the excellent work sir!

    • @ameunier41
      @ameunier41 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      These are probably not that easy to pick considering the way they are placed. Imagine picking it against a wall, the keyhole pointing down.

    • @wwrite
      @wwrite 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      ameunier41 Agreed! So a couple of notes, one that the lock isn’t always pointed down but I would concern that most of the time it is found in that orientation. Two there also has not been an accounting for the rest of the hasp to act like a heat sink. I don’t have the experience with this style of lock to say what’s the Eat way to get in so I’m sticking to observations based on the video.
