    I was deeply involved in the game's development, and was even flown out to events to help present it. This video was like having all of my concerns during that time condensed into a single video. It elicited a ton of nostalgia, but also a somber melancholy; watching the team systematically get laid off was like watching a whole era of my life die. Thanks a ton for making this summary.

      i don't really think so, the game will sell for 20 bucks and usually games like these require a LARGE fanbase to work, and people like when things are free, so i see another death unless marketing gets really good and attracts people to buy it

    I think a cool fact that was left out was that at a certain point in the games development they ran out of money to actually pay their employees at all. Quite a few stayed and worked for free until they got the game to a point where they could actually have a wage again. Sucks to see the game go like this, and I can't even imagine how much this much suck for the devs that believed so much in their game.

    • @eewweeppkk
      @eewweeppkk 6 ปีที่แล้ว +26

      LoL wasn't all that ambitious, was it? DotA was a simple mod to Warcraft and LoL was a simple game made in a similar way. They had to make original assets and all, but have you _seen_ orignal LoL? It didn't have nearly the polish or detail that Gigantic has. LoL is the story of a game with very satisfying gameplay that hooked people, and they used that success to polish it up later.

      NineTailedLiligant - One of the reasons I always facepalm at the whole "all games gotta be multiplayer now" boardroom and shareholder groupthink. There's only so many people in any niche who will play multiplayer constantly, only so much of the time. It's a comparatively small pool. Meanwhile, making singleplayer games almost ensures an audience, because someone somewhere will pick it up - provided the makers don't fail marketing.

    I feel bad for Motiga because they made a fantastic, unique game and no one really got a chance to experience it. Now everyone is hopping onto the BR genre and games like IronSight and Halo Online are around, being praised for being almost literal carbon copies of other games.
    Just goes to show that the world doesn't need another MOBA.

    • @slvrcobra1337
      @slvrcobra1337 6 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Not sure why you put Halo Online into that, it's basically a fan-made PC release of Halo 3. It's not "almost a carbon copy", it's literally Halo 3 cobbled together by fans of the game.

    • @SnugglesPrime
      @SnugglesPrime 6 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      slvrcobra1337 I put it in because everyone was freaking out about it when 0.6 dropped, same with Ironsight, which is essentially Black Ops 2. That combined with everyone now trying to milk the cash cow that is Battle Royale, if I was a former Motiga employee, I'd be so upset at the gaming community for being obsessed with unoriginal ideas that my product got left to die.

    • @slvrcobra1337
      @slvrcobra1337 6 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      Optimus Prime - Dude it's Halo 3, it had a massive fan base that's been begging to have it on PC for over a decade, then they got it for free and with added content, what did you expect lol?
      I also doubt IronSight is taking away that many players, but again people are hype about it because it's closer to old school CoD than CoD itself.
      But I agree on the BR games, I think they're doing more damage to the industry than anything else on the market by a long shot.

    The death of Gigantic was pretty sad tbh. It had potential but was never given a chance to improve because of the costs involved. As you said, the money they made at launch was to replenish what was spent initially. They probably hardly made a profit and just did not have the funds/manpower to improve on the game. These guys basically signed a deal to two major publishers just so their game could see the light of day. The shutdown of Motiga and Gigantic is definitely a really sad story.

    As someone who got access to the game fall of 2014 and played it daily, streamed it, was a community coach and went to Gamescom, this video really sums up many of the things that I had been commenting on that eventually led to its death. I honestly believe that if they released the game at the end of 2015 on Steam and Windows 7, have founders packs, then make changes to the game (such as the power orb system), add an in-game store, more heroes, more levels and Windows 10 support it would have looked differently today. Gigantic is and will be my favourite multi-player game ever and will be VERY hard to beat. I truly hope that someone picks it up and gives it another chance when the time is right, if I could I would.

    Such a cuuuute game. Loved every single one of the characters, the art... They all felt alive with their own personalities even while merely seeing them for brief 3 seconds. So sad.
    I cannot stand Mobas or such type of competitive games, as the communities push me away, however I'm sad to see the people's hard work go to waste. I'd love to play this if it was a normal MMO.. the art alone would make me buy it and pay a subscription.

"Epic dumped money into a game, had no plan or direction, and told their player base repeatedly they wouldn't take feedback, so no one put money into the game.' • @Soundwave1337
    @Soundwave1337 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    As someone who has played Gigantic for over 300 hours, I have to say I intentionally didnt want to watch this video for quite a while. I remember seeing this game way back in 2014 and fell in love with it in a heartbeat! I waited so damn long and wondered where it was and why I heard nothing on it till last year when it came up on steam.
    When I finally got my hands on it? Ho ho boy did I fucking have a blast with the game. So many unique characters to play! All having such gorgeous designs! I gushed over this game with passionate love. I supported the game as much as I could with buying the founder pack for all the characters and occassionally buying in game currency for skins. I wanted this game to get popular, I wanted it to succeed...
    But I know it had its problems... huge ones like the optimization BS and constant texture glitches and models not loading or functioning correctly. The level up skill was so awesome in how you could build your character but often got in the way of fights when it would pop up and youd struggle to read and pick something fast enough.
    When I heard the news that Motiga was getting laid off and Gigantic was gonna shut down? I legit had tears come up, I couldnt bear losing such a wonderful game becasue it wasnt given the chance it deserved. I especially feel miffed because in my opinion I feel Gigantic was WAY ahead of its time in terms of Hero Shooters... if itd gotten the support and attention it deserved it could have easily competed with the likes of Overwatch and Paladins.
    But alas... the day passed long ago when Gigantic finally shut down... and now its lost to the winds of time
    Heres to you Motiga, thank you for the passion and love you put into making Gigantic... to the unique characters you brought to life and had a blast playing as like Charnok, Lord Knossos, Voden, Mozu, Rutger, HK-206, Xenobia, Vadasi, Uncle Sven, and to my main character I had the time of my life playing as Griselma. As she would put it "See you later alligator~"

I’ll never forget not being able to get a pentakill and getting angry at Imani and Tripp or making new friends through seeing them in matches one after another. I’ll always cherish the memories of getting the level 10 weapon for Charnok and rolling around as Pakko, tossing cards around as Oru and just having a blast messing with all the new characters as they released. I loved this game the moment I jumped into my first match. Everything flowed so well. It mixed Paragon's strategic elements with the fluidity of a free roaming sandbox game, fast-paced action of a fighting game, and the ability system of a MOBA. I liked how attacks didn't absolutely gut you inside out. Kills had to be earned through resilience and long skirmishes. That made the game feel rewarding to win and feel immersive even when losing. Battles felt rigorous. In games like Overwatch where Doomfist can one-bang you from god knows which rooftop, it feels cheap and unsatisfying. I don't even need to explain why that's an issue in LoL.
    It's sad how Gigantic never got any recognition. It's a gaming masterpiece of this decade.

    Played the beta on the xbox when it was first released, and it was alot of fun at first. However, all my friends and I could not continue playing after the first or second month because of the frustration caused by a single character, tripp. She was the only character in the game that could roll into a group, kill someone within 2 to 3 seconds and escape again without consequence on anything but the highest level of play. This took alot of skill to pull off, but was something we were seeing multiple times a night, and were events that tended to put our team at a major disadvantage during teamfights, putting us towards a spiral of defeat. I actually started tracking and almost every loss we had was one where the enemy team had a tripp on it, blowing up our backline and crumbling our pre made. She must have been eventually fixed as your video says that the fights tended to drag on too long, but those fights lasting 10 to 20 seconds, felt good to us. They rewarded thought out gameplay, skill, and teamwork even if they did tend to downplay twitch reactions other games tend to favor. This, along with the art style, interesting characters and solid gameplay felt fresh and fun to us while it lasted. Hearing the game is being shut down, even after more than a year of not playing it, is a bit sad to me as this game did have alot of promise. There are very few games that I played for only a very short period of time, yet have a lot of nostalgia for. I doubt majority of players stopped playing this just because of tripp, but that character didnt help them stay afloat for sure and stands out as a highlight of a great game ruined by a out of place character.
