    All I can say is WOW ! Your photography is simply fantastic.I have always just adored owls. We reside on the western coast of Norway. A few days ago we heard this bump bump bump in our chimney flue. We continued hearing it for days. First it was in the upstairs and a couple of days later we heard it in our living room. This time we heard a bird sound. My husband took a thick padded glove and the next day went down to the basement and was able to open the flue down there. He said it was just amazing that he could remove the owl from the flue. I heard my husband stream out for me to come to the window. He managed to get a photo of this beautiful owl. The poor thing had been without food or water for days. He stayed with the owl and helped it until it was able to fly off into the woods behind our house. I pray that it survived. The owl didn't appear to have any damage to its wings or any other problems.

    Simon, your passion for your subjects says it all. It's no wonder that you get so many likes. Here's mine.
    Owls are fascinating creatures. I never seen Barn owls, but I have been lucky to have a regular visitor in the winter: the Barred owl and occasionally the Great Horned owl in the spring. Thanks for another amazing video. Your pictures at the end are wonderful.

      @SimonWantling  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you David - that's very kind of you glad you liked the video. I've been invited into a number of sites through my photography work and word and mouth, so I have the privilege of getting to know the habits of relatively undisturbed wildlife. Most land owners are quite decent when it comes to access as they often have an underlying interest in wildlife themselves. It always pays to respect their rules and it grows from there. I've had a number of requests regarding workshops. It is something I'm considering if there is enough interested people. Thanks again.

    Brilliant day for you. I've got a local barny and little owl but access is difficult. Did you just call up the landowners and strike up a relationship?
    Where did you get the throw over hide from?

    • @SimonWantling
      @SimonWantling  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi and thanks. The throw over hide I got from Wexphotographic here in the UK but Wildlife Watching Supplies sell something very similar. In terms of access to private land. As I'm pretty active in wildlife photography I was initially invited onto a site by the landowner. Word then spreads to other landowners and you just get more invites. I'm always very careful to obey the landowners rules and we work together to improve the local environment for wildlife.

    • @SimonWantling
      @SimonWantling  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, thanks for your comment. If you can get close enough then any lens will do honestly. I have taken images of these owls using a wide angle lens as shown in a later video. This is of course not easy so the longer the focal length the better really. I'm using a 600mm lens but you can always make the lens you have work.

    Beautiful captures and video, Simon! Are there many sightings of either owl in February, because I will be on a trip in England with my wife and son, and would love to photograph little and barn owls while we are there? Any advice on areas to find them? I do some photography with Screech, Saw Whet and Great Horned owls in my part of Canada and have been researching and locating Barred, Short Earred and Long Earred owls for a rew years now. Amazing birds that require a great deal of patience to capture. Any help for our trip to England would be much appreciated!

      Hi Randy, sorry I saw your last message but not had much time to reply. February is often quite good for short eared owls in the UK depending on what part of the country you are heading to. Barn owls are always around but little owls I personally find better in the spring around April and May. What part of the UK are you visiting ?

      Thanks for responding Simon. My son is in a small gaming tournament in London on February 15,16, 2020 and we will tour around there for a few days after. We haven’t really set areas that we want to visit yet. We are interested in stone circles, old churches, quaint villages and other places where my wife and son could be off exploring while I am off searching for owls and enjoying nature. We will probably head to York and Yorkshire but have would like to see some coastal areas perhaps east or south west. Any suggestions?

    Hi Simon, with your vast knowledge of these species would you know what is the best time to start photographing Barn Owls in the day time, I understand they do hunt during the day often but its particular months that they start, I have finally found a subject and after interrogating locals, Looks like I missed out on some Tawneys and owletts 4 months ago in an old oak tree ! p.s...have you always used Cannon?

      Hi Jason, glad you have found a barn owl location. It's hard to say when the best time is for owls during the day as they do fly at that time all year round really but I find it largely depends on your location. Strictly speaking though the best time when there is a lot of daylight activity in my opinion is Feb -April when they are pairing up. Then after that when they have big owlets to feed they will be out also during the day. Yes I've always shot Canon although other brands are equally as good. The R5 looks amazing but I was also impressed by the Olympus setup as well so it's a bit of a moving beast really. I'm still a canon user though. 👍

      @@SimonWantling many thanks Simon, i liked the olympus review you did, its alot more in the realms of affordability, have been looking though at the Nikon D500 that has good reviews too, alot cheaper for a not so serious photographer, but i feel the pull towards better kit, sadly i think my wife thinks the kitchen needs updating first ! Lol. Keep safe !

      I don't know much about the Nikon. You don't need massively expensive kit to get nice images. You can't beat good field craft to get the best images in my opinion plus the experience of being there. Yes always a balance between budget and important things like the house. Remember a happy wife is a happy life 😉

      @@SimonWantling Ive only an entry level body with a 150-600 at mo, so anything would be an improvement on that to be honest, although as you say its all down to decent field craft really
