Unwound live @ Best Friends Forever, Las Vegas NV (October 12, 2024) [complete set]

I wish I had a long-winded tale of how I was right there at the very begining of the Unwound tale. Instead, I sit here repentant confessing for my cardinal sin of not having given the band the love that they so richly deserve for the longest time. Certain things are simply inexplicable. And everything about what I was listening at the time should have poised me to freaking listen enthusiastically to the band. I was into Sleater-Kinney, the other jewel of the crown out of Olympia WA and on the Kill Rock Stars roster. But I picked up 'Fake Train', their debut album at the venerable Shake Records' 1993 Boxing day sale in Ottawa Canada and the album just got lost in the shuffle among all of my other purchases of the day. In retrospect, I don't think my brain was ready for Unwound. Instead, I finally saw the light on 'Leaves Turn Inside You', their brilliant final album prior to breaking up in 2001.

By the time Unwound announced that there would be a 2023 reunion, I had atoned for the sins of my past, setting me up on a collision course that would culminate with an amazing set at Best Friends Forever in which the band would play 'New Plastic Ideas' on the 30th anniversary of its release, and an album that might have unlocked the key to my heart had I actually heard it upon its release.

Most of you know that Sara Lund is fighting a breast cancer diagnosis and I sure as shit expect her to kick the fuck out of this shitty disease right in balls until it retreats from whence it came. In the meanwhile, Sara had expressed how the prospect of playing shows was essential to her. For me, seeing the band with Sara behind the drumkit was life affirming. The band sounded brutally vital and beautiful. If that part where Justin's vocal part mirrors the guitar squall on 'For Your Entertainment' doesn't make the hairs in the back of your neck stand on end, you've got no soul. And I was lucky to be there.

YES! A million thank yous. It is SO good to see Scott and Jared get more camera time - I didn't even know Scott was fingerpicking, and I've seen them three times already! Invaluable footage for learning their songs.
Fuck cancer, I'm holding the highest hopes that Sara recovers without any issue.
