One thing about the curve on the chevron is that it may be to avoid tabaco advertising laws. When Marlboro sponsored Indycar teams in the 2000’s they had to run rounded chevrons because the pointed chevron was considered tabaco advertising
Even some of the old MP4 cars have since had their liveries rounded so McLaren can still use them in advertising, just not this particular car
The MP4/4's red chevrons are rounded because the sharp chevrons are a part of Marlboro's logo. LEGO played it safe and altered the livery in addition to removing the Marlboro text. Unfortunately the overall look of the model suffers from this alteration but I get the reasons.
That Senna McLaren set is fantastic, hopefully the start of a new "Classic F1" sub-theme. Would be nice to get a Schumacher Benetton or a Mansell Williams.
I agree - that McLaren Speed Champions look awesome! Hope Lego keeps making more F1 Speed Champions in the future 🤞 A Red Bull and Ferrari would be cool 😎

I wonder if LEGO was afraid of looking too much like a pack of cigarettes if the nose of Senna's McLaren was more accurate.
That was my first instinct when I saw the set. It's so iconic though, more so than the cigarette branding these days.

Honestly mightve been a branding or trademark issue, obviously they weren't going to license Marlboro but the white triangle on red may be infringing
Yeah and maybe there is a trademark issue and i think it’s safe to assume that lego wouldn’t bother contracting the rights for marlboro (Even for historical accuracy) considering as you said potentiel polemics because of it. It kind of reminds me of the Lego hoverboard from back to the futur 2 that didn’t contained the Mattel logo. Here It’s a bit of a shame considering how the front covering is so iconic. It would be interesting to know.
It's definitely the Marlboro branding
The Senna model's white-on-red parts are interesting since the big one on the front looks almost like a dual-molded part, while the one just below and forward of the rear wing looks more like the printing we usually get on multi-angle parts.
Perhaps, the reason the print on the nose is not sharp is that it would be too reminiscent of the Marlboro design? LEGO clearly tried to distance themselves from this aspect of this F1 car.
Pretty sure the white on the nose of the Senna car is rounded so it's not indicative of the Marlboro logo
I assume the curved print on the front of the Icons set is to avoid getting flak from Marlboro. A Transformer in the Masterpiece line, Exhaust, got Takara into trouble because the G1 figure it was an update of was fully Marlboro branded. The Masterpiece figure, like the Icons MP4, wasn't licensed to Marlboro (understandably), and had a similar triangular white/red motif evoking Marlboro's branding. They wound up being forced to change it to a less aesthetically appealing shape on the car mode's hood in order to be able to release the figure at all.
Definitely getting the Speed Champions McLaren. My favourite team and my favourite drivers in F1 currently. Gonna try to find a face print for the figure to look like Oscar Piastri!
I totally agree about the red/white curve instead of the point on the Senna car. I'm sure it's because Lego wanted to try and hide that it's supposed to be a cigarette sponsor there. I'm not a massive F1 fan but this is Senna so I'll be getting it. Also, I love the Creator Expert/Icons vehicles so I'm hoping this looks good next to them
I think they didn't do the point as that is actually the shape of a Marlboro red cigarette boxes which was the sponsor on the picture you pulled up.

Thanks for sharing your fan insight, as a fan of both Lego and F1. The Senna tribute is great. Regarding the McLaren/Technic sets, my biggest disappointment is that the Extreme E racer isn't in the Speed Champions line.
I will buying those slicks on the new Mercedes F1 for my McLaren F1. I think the month if March is going to be big for a lot of lego enthusiast's. I know it will be for me.

I've started seing the rounding-up of the Marlboro livery with Marlboro cars (not just F1) in 1:18 scale a few years ago.... it completely messes up the livery.
Maybe the change in the print has something to do with avoiding branding associated with the cigarette (as shown in your reference photo.)
I wonder if the rounded section of the “pink” print is due to a trademark/copyright/whatever issue with Marlboro. Like, Lego couldn’t make it pointy because Marlboro “owns” the pointy bit?

I’m willing to bet that the curved chevron print on the nose of the Senna model is a tobacco advertising regulation thing. The same thing happened with the chevrons on the diecast models of the Marlboro throwback livery that McLaren ran in the Indy 500 this past year.

I am glad to see a shell logo back on a Lego product.
I don't mind the weird livery with the MP4/4 but I hate the shaping on the nose. I seem to remember an early rumor that it would be the MP4/8 instead of the MP4/4, and the curved/angled nose makes me think a blurry leaked photo lead to the conclusion. From the cockpit forward, it doesn't look like the MP4/4 at all.
What if they had made that front slope in white and just printed the red on the back. That may have worked better.

Jang, I think the Senna car doesn't have the pointed red shape because it's recognisably Marlboro's design. Might be a moral choice by LEGO or a copyright thing

Personally, I have no interest in that first Icons set or the technic sets. I’ll definitely be buying the Speed Champions set through, that looks amazing!

They probably had to change it to curves because where it comes to a point is associated with the Marlboro sponsor

On Senna’s car the rear wheel being the same width as the front is the only annoying part for me.
I’m gutted that the MP4/4 is a very flawed set - the tyres and the livery to name a couple. I’ve looked at that car for years as a huge F1 fan, seen it in real life and studied it during an engineering education. I knew immediately that things were off. Such a shame😢
My thoughts about the Senna F1 car why there is no triangle shape on the nose: so it is just the livery and not the connection with the cigarette brand. That is what I am thinking, but I could be wrong.
It's most likely because the point is part of the Marlboro packaging & Lego doesn't wanna be associated with that

The McLaren MP4/4 looks great, but like you I'm very suspicious of the white printing on the red piece on the nose of the car; it's gonna be very thin as that's what we expect these days from Lego, whose standards have been rather subpar on the printing department. I kinda wonder if red printing on white pieces would've been a better alternative, unless it looked even worse...
I'm keen on the set, but gonna wait for reviews to see how it actually looks and if it passes that, see who else is selling it for possible discounts.
It's about time slick styled tyres have been made for the F1 race cars, it's long overdue!
The 2023 Speed Champions McLaren looks awesome, but I feel the general value of that theme has been greatly diminished now, which is only worsened by other sets in other themes which offer a lot more for the same price or even less. Yeah not everyone is gonna be into City or Technic and so on, but it's now questionable if it's worth it to be paying $27 for a single small car; it'll be great to build for sure, but with a small end result. And tough to swallow the fact that four cars (single pack cars) will cost $108! It's very very telling that City sets, which have often been overpriced in the US, are looking like great value in 2024; even Bowser's Muscle Car is only $3 more than a single Speed Champions car.
The nose is to avoid the Marlboro chevron unfortunately. I do agree it throws things off a little
As a nascar fan the fact is at least in the US adult products can’t be put on an item that kids are capable of buying (nascar diecasts are effected by this with beer sponsors) this also makes me wish they did more nascars, they’ve done 2, the large technic gen 7 and a speed championship gen 6, however both have been Camaros, if they made a mustang and camry would be fun

If you notice there are bricks that make up the colors of the Brazilian flag when you take the cowling off.
SPOILER ALLERT: Got and built Senna' McLaren last night and the nose piece is pink :( When I bought it I remembered this video and thought I will be lucky, but yeah. Also similar piece on the back is also pinkish. Thinking about painting it myself :/.

I'm betting Lego didn't go for the triangular print on the nose because its the Marlboro logo and dont want to be linked to cigarettes and bad health etc. Such a miss though!

McLaren don’t let anyone do the pointed chevron (even on the original cars) because it promotes Marlboro… who left them for Ferrari. It’s a big soap opera. Nothing to do with Lego

I think it's criminal how unfinished the MP4/4 looks
It blows my mind how lego manages to make 5 F1 cars and NONE of them have the correct proportions. Tires mostly is the issue and honestly lego prioritizing profits over the quality of their products is the cause. You say proportions are really difficult to get right. I disagree. It’s the easiest part of creating a new design. These products are being designed in CAD software with lots of calculations before the parts are created. I understand if they had used the available parts but they actually designed new wheels and tires and still got them all wrong! How is this possible? CADA’s Alfa Romeo has absolutely perfect proportions with perfect tires for hundreds of dollars cheaper.

Honestly i do not like the design of the large scale mercedes at all, the whole design is not even nearly comparable with the actual car and the mclaren from the year before is way better if i'm honest.
And i predict that both mercedes sets wil not sell at all in Holland, the last set they did barely if at all sold here...
I think when lego finally makes a deal with red bull, i can see their sets outselling everything for a long while...
