I think what Hanni means is a year between kindergarten and 1st grade at school. In Germany, in my day (70s and 80s), we called this preschool (Vorschule). There you learn the basics for school, concentrating, sitting still, listening, or if you still had some difficulty speaking, you can still learn this. This would enable you to meet the requirements later in 1st grade. Today, this hardly exists anymore and teachers in 1st grade have the problem of having to convey this to the children, which of course requires more work and hinders learning somewhat at the beginning.
2:59 Reception = Grade 0 in Oz, like between 5-6 years of age. Between "kindy" kindergarten and year 1 primary school. Some schools, depending on being public or private, may amalgamate it into year 1 such that "reception" is only 6-8 months prior. Typically, it's undertaken at the intended primary school as separate from a kindergarten. It's like a buffer period to get what are basically very young kids, used to a life centered entirely within their family environment, acclimated to the more structured school environment beginning at year 1.
In the U.S. its called pre- school, since it comes before official school. Then kindergarten, elementary school (grade 1-5, middle school or junior high (grade 6-8) and then 4 years of high school, freshman, sophomore, junior and senior.
Interesting difference between school systems - and that's just within Australia! Mine was modeled after the British system with Lower Kindergarten, then Upper Kindergarten, then primary school 1 thru 6, then secondary school Forms 1 thru 5, Lower6, and Upper6.
I really like it when they add English when they are talking because if they don’t then when they need it the most they might forget their English vocabulary
I think they speak their mother tongue, which is English, to express more of their thoughts, not because they’re worried about forgetting it. Even if you live in another country for many years and speak a different language, your first language still comes naturally, especially when you’re struggling to find the right words in that language. Since most of their audience is Korean, and they’re artists in Korea, they speak Korean. But you can see, especially with Hanni, that when she wants to add more of her thoughts, she sometimes struggles to find the right words in Korean. That’s why speaking their mother tongue helps them express themselves best. And of course, they have international viewers too.
It goes like this. Prep School - kindergarten - Gr.1-6 - HS 1st-4th - Coll/Univ 1-4. or in North America from Prep School - Kindergarten - Gr. 1-10 - Jr HS 11 - Sr HS 12 - Coll/Univ.
Having both grown up in Australia, these two girls have plenty to share about their experiences. Loving Hanni and Danielle’s podcast show! ❤❤
