It's such a nice tune, Neil. And it's a good go-into (from other tunes) kind of reel.

Thank you so much for your videos. I am learning celtic harp and your advice helps a lot. Cold up here in Ontario!

I would love to hear Willie Colemans Jig. It's a lovely Sligo tune.

Hi, Brian. That's a great tune. We'll try to include it in today's online session.

Searched your resources for The new policeman. How can a tune come by such different names!
Must be someone playing the game Chinese whispers 😄

Yes. Many of the tunes go by several names. Confusing... But also colorful! Glad you figured out THIS was the New Policeman.

May I ask why the alto flute is not more present in airs and the like? I play the full range of whistles and find the alto flute quite fitting, despite the need for transposing and keeping a separate set of fingering patterns available (albeit the same for concert flute, whistles and even my C soprano sax). And yet, I never see or hear anyone playing such at sessions. Your technique of teaching is quite helpful.

I, too, love to play and hear the alto flute! In fact while waiting for my first traditional Irish flute to be made (I've got many months more to go) I have started to practice on my alto flute. I would quickly agree that a standard orchestral flute just don't sound right in a session-too pure, loud, shrill even-and it sure doesn't look right. But the alto flute can fit right in, sound wise, to my ears. (I may paint my alto "brown", just so no one notices it. Just kidding.) I do think that learning the "pattern" of a series of note-a "tune" if you will-instead of just the absolute note values, has been helpful over the years to memorizing a piece. So transposing a piece is not by any means a waste of time? Thanks to the Heatons for inspiring me to play these many months of sheltering in place!

@@sldaley5692 and Mark - love it! Please play Irish tunes on alto flute. Sarah Allen does it in Flook. Really beautiful. And groovy. And transposing is just another way of using your ear, and becoming more flexible.

@@ShannonHeatonMusic "Groovy"?! You don't even look CLOSE to being old enough to remember the 1960s and "Groovy"!!! Keep up the great stuff! S. Lanny O'Daly
