In America, Valentines is really for everyone, not just girls. In elementary school, you would give a store-bought Valentine card and small candy (they would come together from a specific candy brand) to your classmates. I don't know if other schools did it this way but in my school, we would all decorate a brown paper bag and put it at the front of the classroom under our names and you could "anonymously" leave your Valentine's gifts for whoever you wanted. You were supposed to give one to everyone so people didn't feel excluded but you would always give a better one (one with candy instead of just the card) to your friends. When you got back to your seat you would have to wait until break to look at the bag and if you were bad, you wouldn't get your bag until the very end of the day. This was how I spent my Valentine's Day all through 4th grade. After that, it was up to you to give Valentine's to your friends on your own time. But I would always give and receive nice cards from my parents, grandparents, and sister along with store-bought chocolates. Homemade chocolates aren't huge in America unless you buy it from a store that specializes in homemade chocolates or if you are a chef.
When people get old enough to start dating, the girls in heterosexual relationships almost always expect huge romantic gestures from their boyfriends (I.E. Book a fancy dinner, buy a dozen roses, buy fancy chocolates, and if the relationship is at that level, an intimate evening, all paid for by the boyfriend), That is the stereotypical image of a couple at Valentine's day, the man spoiling his princess/queen. This is why I honestly prefer how Valentine's Day works in Japan. There's a day for the girls to shower their lovers in affection and gifts so it's not girls being spoiled and pampered.

    Poem:
White Day, Valentine's Day every day
    Generosity three times repaid
walking ahead, with new sweet words
    behind one's lips
    lively becomes the day
as a mute throat makes a new sound
    people become ever closer
and warmth brings rewards to lovers.
Thank you Risa Chan you make learning so much fun.

In Sweden I think it's mostly that both people in the relationship gives something to the other, since we don't have White Day.

In America its traditional for men to give presents/gifts to women. So when Valentines day comes most advertisements showcase men giving gifts to women. But Valentines day is for women in America but you can still give gifts to men. Oh and little children hand out valentine cards to their classmates. I hope you read this Risa-Chan! \(^.^)/

Yes, we give chocolate (or other gifts) to women. We also exchange cards with loved ones. I like chocolate, so I would enjoy Valentine's Day in Japan! ^^

Risa先生、 as others have said, in most countries it is men who give women chocolate (and flowers, and jewelry, depending on the relationship). In fact, people in other countries are very surprised to hear that women give men chocolate for Valentine's Day in Japan. We say "Oh, those lucky guys!" But the history of "giri-choco" is not widely known. And now it is becoming more "tomo-choco".
Anyway, nice yodeling. That was a surprise! :-D

Yes Risa, it is usually the men who give presents to the women in England. In fact, I've never heard of women giving presents to men like this! Very interesting... That's why I love Japan.
Thank you for your lessons. They are amazing. O daijini!

Yes! In the USA and UK it's customary for men to get women flowers and chocolate. This is usually reserved for relationships though.
Sometimes women will give men cards or gifts as well.
Valentine's Day is also a time for Kokuhaku for men and women as it is perceived as a romantic holiday!

In France it depends a lot. But most of the time, either both persons in a couple will make a gift to each other, or neither will. They usually agree upon that in advance, and may still try to have a special date on Valentine's Day

  • @rinrinri101
    @rinrinri101 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

As for many Americans, we only celebrate Valentine's Day. Both men and woman exchange gifts, although some woman (usually stuck up woman) do not give their beloved partner gifts, and instead only expect one. Men usually only give flowers and chocolates, sometimes a stuffed animal and a card too, but for married couples, they may do something like give jewelry or accessories. It really just depends on the couple. Some couples don't even celebrate the day! Also, at schools, usually from grade 1 to grade 10, all students in their own grade, give each other sweets, and even give their teacher a present (often a candle or something teacher based, like chocolate shaped like an apple since it used to be customary for the good students to give the teacher an apple on their first day of school, it has become sort of a symbol for teachers) Haha, I hope I haven't gone on for too long and this is informative. Of course these are only the habits I know from people in my life, and I only live in one part of America, it could be different in other parts. America has so many people with different views and ideas for Valentine's day.

In Portugal there's no such thing as White Day.
We only celebrate Valentine. In Valentine's Day, both men and women give presents to their partners. Also, at some schools, we choose a student to be the "cupid". If we have a crush on other student, it's an opportunity to write a love letter (it can be anonymous). The cupid will collect all letters from all students and will visit every classroom to deliver them.

Happy White Day. Hope it's an enjoyable one.
While in most western countries that practice Valentine's day or other similar gift giving days have men and women both giving and receiving gifts, it's more the focus of what the men get the women in their lives. Whether it be a lover or a family member like a mother, daughter, etc. Mother's day is another rough one for some people. But that's just a cultural thing I suppose.
Personally I'd enjoy the dual holiday concept that Japan has with Valentine's and white day. I think it would make things a lot easier on everyone. But that's my opinion.

Here in the United States men do give to women on Valentines Day it is very typical for men to give flowers and chocolate or something that the woman really like as a surprise if he does not give flowers or chocolate. we don't really have a day where women give to men except maybe fathers day or our birthday but that's if you're in a relationship usually. It would be nice in America if we had a day where women give to men besides the typical Father's Day birthday and sometimes and Valentine's Day on Christmas we give to each other on anniversary we give to each other. but yes typically in America we men give our women many gifts at different times for various reasons

i think in most countries, it's the men who give presents to the girl they like so it's just one girl they're giving a gift to. usually it's flowers, chocolates, or stuffed toys.

In the US men give a gift to women for Valentines day the more special the lady the more costly but also chocolates are given as well. We do not have White Day so women at times if they feel like it maay give men a gift. I like the japanese tradition better. A couple of years ago I received Homme Choko in the mail from a very special lady in Japan.

Where I live (Canada) we only participate in Valentines day!!! And it's not just limited to your lover or crush we give chocolates to those we love in any kinds of way. I like to give chocolates to friends family, etc. and it is not expected for the person receiving to return the favour; though that could be rather rude not to give some sort of thank you >.
