My answer to 3:31:
Trauma.
You've gone through something awful, be it a specific incident or over a long time.
You are attuned to look for threats at all times.
Because of this, in times of danger you are doing exactly what you've been unknowingly training yourself to deal with.
Any other time though? You look for the threat, ever expecting it to be there but it isn't, but you can never convince that part of your mind that. So the stress just builds and builds to the point you're almost relieved when you actually have something to point it at.
That's my pseudopsychological point of view on it anyway.
