- Welcome Gardeners! Join me today for my September Front Garden Tour! MOST of the garden is looking beautiful, however we are dealing with some pests: budworms, gophers and something called a figeater beetle?! It’s all ok though! The pests are just making the garden interesting, right? 🪲 Enjoy!

Hey Janey👋 Instead of calling it your shade garden you can just called it your secret garden.❤
Fountain Grass around the propane tank would cover it up.
Great idea!!😊
You should plant fountain grass in front of the septic tank.
Seeing photos from the past as compared to how the plant is now if extremely useful - thank you!
Gophers ate all the roots off 2 young fig trees and much more. I put in the sonic sound spikes and no more gophers in over a year.
I’ve had good results with the solar spikes too. I put a perimeter of them in and they are keeping rabbits out too!
What is this product? Rabbits are destroying my garden!
I'm going to look into that . I had a fig tree for 3 years that I noticed it was leaning touched it and the tree fell over. The covers had eaten all the roots. It was such a good tree. Thanks for the info😊
I had moles having a good old time in my sod this summer and I added sonic spikes and they definitely helped!
Thank you for the advice, just went online and ordered the product.
Monty is showing out for New York fashion week😂
Circle the butane tank with that purple fountain grass. Problem solved! They are stunning.
A whole swath of pink gomphrena in front of the espalier wall would be beautiful, just a thought
That's a fantastic idea, and add some gara( I don't know the spelling 😅) they would add interest, yet you could still see her fabulous espalier.
Instead of calling it your secret shade garden you could call it your sun shade garden ❤️
Good morning Janey and Jason. I LOVE the Purple Fountain Grass! HOLY COW it is huge and stunning 😍 I will miss the Silver Falls, it too is stunning and will look naked there 😁 I would just call that "The Secret Garden". 😊 Everything looks amazing. Thank you for sharing this with us.
Hey Janey. Once your Lavendar Twist Redbud loses its leaves be sure to remove all the "leaf litter" at the base of the tree. The fungus is much less likely to occur next year and winter over. 😊 I do this with my big leaf Hydrangeas and it works great!
Your love of gardening is indeed showing through in this video. Its amazing how things have grown beyond expectations. My favorite is the caryopteris Beyond Midnight Bluebeard (I have 2 that are doing extremely well). Thank you for introducing us to such a wide variety of plants for Zones 9. Here in s/c Louisiana I have to contend w/high humidity but I find I can be successful with what you have introduced into your garden.
How is salvia working for you? In Vancouver BC, with dense planting and high humidity, my salvia got powdery mildew. So I'm replacing it with more lavender.
@@MyFocusVaries Salvia works great here, no mildew but I find that they'll get leggy if I don't cut back periodically. I don't do well with lavender. I lost a beautiful one this year due to a rainy summer.
I absolutely love that Chicklet Orange plant! How beautiful! As always, thank you for the tour. Looking forward to watching all the center island plans take shape!
I agree, Fountain Grass around the propane tank! Your frontyard looks beautiful. Can't wait to see the changes in the middle island. ❤M
Some things I found that handle under my black walnut trees real well ( and I have a ton of black walnut trees) are Baptisia for sure! Iris and either millennium or serendipity allium!
I like the idea of calling it The secret garden. It was my favorite book as a child and still is today. Every spring I read it😊 your garden's looking wonderful. I love the lemon Coral see them
Hi Janey 🌺. Your front garden looks stunning with these pretty colors and the blue flowers are gorgeous in your garden . I will look fore this caryopteris plant and the blue color is going to be amazing in your garden . Have a great day .🌺🌻🌺
That’s going to b a tough video getting those grasses out of the planter box! Good luck!
Hey Janey - under your black walnut you could put a series of three gorgeous pots and plant whatever you want. Petunias, fountain grass, verbena ..... Just a thought. Love you - love your garden!
Janey! I love your chicket orange Esperanza. Your plant selection is so inspiring to my garden here in central FL - also zone 9b -. Mine is thriving too and I’m so glad you’re shining a light on it. Also your zigzag planter is forever amazing.
Here for the garden and you, but can we see the countertops?❤
That is a lot of land... And you are such an Inspiration!
Glad you discovered the Esperanza. I have one with yellow blooms. It laughs at the dry heat we have, the foliage is gorgeous green and it shoots laterals wherever you prune. I have red hot pokers also.
You could add succulents and xeriscape plants in front and between your trees on the long border. It could be a way to showcase how some Californians garden in our hot, dry, rocky, poor soil conditions. Laura Eubanks (succulent designer)on YT has some gorgeous examples.
❤janey, you did a great job in your garden.its looking fabulous over all.❤love it
Glad you’re going to use gopher baskets Janey Easy to make with chicken wire . Larger ones for your gorgeous new trees. 🌳
Are you putting in any palms? Nothing more California than that! 🌴🌴🌴
Some plants thrive in poor (unamended ) soil for the long border:
Russian sage,
yarrow,
lavender,
coreopsis,
salvia,
sedum,
agave,
bougainvillea,
rosemary
wholly thyme,
aster,
bee balm monarda
black eyed Susan,
liatris,
fennel,
fountain grass,
periwinkle
Cone flower
Sea holy
Manzanita
🤓
Garden looks amazing
Hi Janey, I'm from Minnesota zone 4A. I watch your channel every day. Everything is looking so beautiful, great job!!! I have the same purple fountain grass in pots on my deck and they are huge as well. Love them though. I wish I didn't have to replace them every year. ❤
Great video, wow most is looking great and your learning the place and it’s needs 👍🏻
Wow. Your plants are waking up or still going and mine are winding down and going to sleep. Love seeing what happens in other parts of the country.
Hummingbirds love my Esperanza shrubs. 😊
The Secret Shade Garden could now be called your Secret Side Garden. 🥰
You can call your secret garden your yin and yang garden.
Your garden is looking great!
That's perfect. Yes, Janey, do that 😊
Pretty California garden!
everything looks so nice, just amazing one year ago and what you have done. wow wow. and darn gophers! I have moles and ugggg what a pain they can be! the pink bluebeard at 19:10 so pretty i have the blue and it is just striking, so pretty. thanks for sharing Genie : )
I read one comment that suggested the fountain grass around the tank in the front island 👍🌱
Thanks for the garden tour! Looking amazing
For your long border, how about planting cactuses and succulents, with big boulders and fountain as accessories. I see a great opportunity for a difficult site. Good luck Janey!
Fantastic tour as always!
My heliotrope is one of my favorite plants also. I always plant a lot of it around my front door area. I love having people come to the front door and say 'What is that amazing smell? 💜
I've almost gone crazy trying to figure out how to plant things that will withstand the deer, the black walnut trees, the groundhogs, the squirrels and the rabbits. My original plans have been modified over and over and over again. Years ago, my apple trees started dying one, then another, and so on until all 5 of them were gone. I had no idea that the Black Walnut trees that my neighbor let grow were at fault. He was doing my lawnmowing and let them grow. I wish I knew then what I know now!
I prune my fountain grass into a small ball. They come back great.
Well good morning janey and monty. Such a beautiful morning after all of the heat you guys have had. Good to look back and see progress and how things have changed. Hang in there Monty. It won't be very much longer and you'll be a free soul again. You should all be very proud of yourself for making such a transformation beautiful job.. Have a blessed day the oklahoma gardener😊
Place some wiring cages around the plant underground to see if that will stop the gophers
Your Robbie willow is looking good. You showed planting it, and you showed it growing a bit one sided, and you showed what you were trying, to correct that, but have you showed any other close ups of how that correction seems to have worked? Wishing you energy, strength, and determination in your tree planting journey. Personally I would find out how extensive all that road base is on your long border. It could have been used as other parking and really should be removed, it will never be good soil, it’s only stone and sand. Thanks for your awesome videos.
Janey you can call it sunshade garden 😊
Montyyyy ❤ I’m sure he’ll bounce right back!
Grass gives you that privacy from the street
Beautiful garden. I am taking notes of trees and flowers to plant them next year😢. My garden face north zone 9b, you know, a full sun garden. I need strong plants for CA hot summers 😅
Beautiful blessings from the work of your hands and your family. Enjoyed❤
That section with the lemon coral sedum looks so beautiful! Well, it all looks great Janey:). I had to plant everything in gopher cages too. I used hardware cloth (cut & folded) after watching a gopher take one of my plants down right in front of me the prior year. Its part of the adventure😊
Plant your purple fountain grass around the tank
Plants can be used to repel gophers, such as gopher spurge (Euphorbia lathyris), crown imperials, lavender, rosemary, salvia, catmint, oleander and marigolds. I found this on Google. Maybe plant more lavender there with some shasta daisies and gophers don't like them.
Hi Janey, the cultivar of heliotrope I have does not give off the lovely scent as you have mentioned. So that’s one of the reasons I bought your candle! I treated myself also to the gift box and cotton long sleeve shirt. They are all fantastic and of great quality ! Thank you! 🥰🌸🇨🇦
Hi Janey, I’m wondering does your neighbor know that those trees are encroaching over your fence. Maybe they would consider taking them out. Secret Garden is still a perfect name….its all coming together beautifully. Can’t wait to see the trees getting installed 💚🥰
Janey the front garden is looking so good… great job! Thank you for mentioning bud worms as I couldn’t figure out why my superbeanas quit producing flowers. I upped the fertilizer and watering but no luck! Now I’m going to spray and hopefully they will bloom. 🤞
Janey the figeater beetles also love the jacaranda trees too so just a heads up as I know you plan to plant one of those too.
I feel your black walnut pain!
I believe corn is a heavy feeder. Maybe not enough fertilizer? 🌺💚🙃
Move the pomegranate to the corner if you don't like it's shape. They are always going to grow like that. So move it to a corner area but that's how they like to grow. ❤
I feel your pain with the gophers, I’m fighting squirrels. They’ve eaten 3 of my melons and everytime I plant something they dig it up. Very frustrating.
Secret Side Garden!
Just call it your Secret Garden. 😊
You could’ve covered that propane tank with a brown Camo blanket
And then planted all of your fountain grass around it. It would’ve just disappeared.
Love your show love you and Jason and the girls !!
In response to prior comment re the the "sonic" spikes to repel gophers, I have tried them in three states and they absolutely did not work. You need to trap them or have cats or fox terriers that have learned to hunt them & kill moles or voles.
In the Midwest, we call them green June bugs. Mid June, for a few weeks they bumble around the ground during the day. I've never seen them eat anything. I think their job is to mate and then back in the ground. Freaked me out the first time I saw them years ago, but now I enjoy their antics!
Those dang earwigs also will attack the Superbena. I need to put slug & Snail bait around my Superbena’s as well as spraying with BT. Geraniums are also on the burworms diet!
The dichondra silver falls kinda looks like a weeping blue cedar 😂
Those darn budworms. They don’t give up! It still looks gorgeous!❤
It’s a perfect secret garden
It can be the yin and yang garden?!?!? I love seeing the transformation of your yard and feel like I found your channel at just the right time.
Side yard garden seems like a good replacement for shade garden.😊
Instead of spending all that money moving the tank (think of all the other things you could do with that money!!!) Just plant some taller Evergreen shrubs around it. You'll NEVER see the tank this way. It just seems so impractical to move the tank and spend so much money. Just my opinion. Garden looks gorgeous Janey!! ❤
It is your side garden.
Paint zig zag sage green that will disappear with trailing green foliage add clay pots instead of white to mirror your front door
Instead of shade garden, it can be a combo garden on the side
Hi Janey I love you show your success and some failures outsider looking in I see a lot of success yo7 have a lot of property to tend to so I love your spirit it’s the right attitude to have other wise I think it would get overwhelming and not fun anymore also I live near you and I have whirlwind blue scvula in a pot for seconde year this winter will be last of my test and if it makes it I will plant a large area in mybfron5 yard we’re I have three River Birch Trees I hope you cut them back and see if yours make it 😀🦋👏🏻
With the gas tank, could you build a black fence post (cheaper) box to slip over the gas tank. Glad I’ve never had gophers.
Have you considered using some large boulders and rocks to add interest in the long garden? Also A gardener who does succulent installation ? Laura Eubanks maybe?
It would be beautiful. You could plant them around your propane tank in the front yard. I know that bothers you totally hide, but allow access.
Hey Janey, Whatever happened to the olives that you brined?
Maybe that's what is wrong with my superbenas. Time to go take a closer look
you could get some little rustic metal flowers spikes to pop in instead of white flags for gopher holes.
Just call it the secret garden the wall of vines makes it look hidden.
May I have your attention please 🙋🏻♀️ May I have your attention please 🙋🏻♀️ I think you should call it your Slim Shady Garden 🤣🤣🤣🤣
it's your sunny shade garden lol
Love your tours! I'd call it your " secret side garden". I can't help but cringe a bit when you talk about Chinese pistache trees as they are invasive in North Texas. My neighbors have one and the seedlings pop up ALL over my yard. Glad they work for you though as they do have great qualities. I can't wait for your no-mow lawn!!!
Have you considered planting Plumbago plants, blue flowers and they do very well in our zone.
Love the orange Esperanza, I have a yellow but the orange is beautiful
Hey Jeannie, just a thought why don’t you put your purple fountain grass around your propane tank you were going to transplant it anyway that would look really pretty
Still waiting for you to remove some of that driveway
You could call that "shade" garden The Enclave.
Hi Janey, i find your garden videos very inspirational and informative. when is the best time to add compost? I also have terrible soil and I’m not sure how to amend it.
Maybe next to your house you add splashes of true deep red since it’s an isolated bed and it’s a color you don’t have in the garden. Would look great next to the white house
Hy sweet girl. Looks like a small forest in the zigzag planters. What is the fall planting idea? Love your channel.
North west Michigan, I have good luck with Vole Scram and Deer Scram. I wonder if the Gopher scram is as effective? I know people who use vole baskets, but I have too much planting space to make that financially feasible,
Living up north in Canada when I hear California I imagine PALM trees and you don't have it in your garden...
I'm in 9b far northern CA and the trumpet vine is very invasive in my yard it pops up everywhere, lawn , flower beds and anywhere else , I pull it up by the roots as soon as I see it but 3 just can't seem to keep up with , it was here on this property when I bought it 27 yrs ago, it can be very frustrating to try to get rid of.
Awesome
So sorry about your Gatsby Pink Hydrangea! Hope you can win the gopher battle. Glad for the #teampomegranate and #teamlemon wins!
How about planting the grasses in zig zag around propane tank?
I am gob-smacked! Your garden is so good for being so young. I also have a Temple of Bloom tree about the same size and it has burned every year. It's only getting morning sun, it's in a 15 gallon pot, water every day. Do you think it just doesn't like being in a pot? Do you fertilize yours? Can anyone else give me some insight?
