Hi! I've been following your channel for a long while. I'm in my late thirties, but I'm totally blind so I have to be extremely organised to sustain a good quality of life. While my husband works from home, I have a full time job in town. We're both blind. He cooks dinners and we would often freeze things for my lunches. I also prepare my coffee machine the night before and I take a coffee flask and my water bottle to work and I also prepare lunches the night before. We shop weekly on Ocado and discuss our weekly meal plan together. We often feel isolated, noticing how others run in and out of shops; it's reassuring to know that there are people, who are not necessarily disabled, who live similar lives. Thanks for reading! XX
Living on my own, I still make wholesome soups in large batches. I don't mind eating the same thing several days running. But my absolute rule is that the last serving ALWAYS goes in the freezer. Then when life does not go quite according to plan, I have something I can pull out , microwave and enjoy
I found myself nodding to everything!!! I still have my Sistema mugs that I took to school every day and I still use them. One of my freezers is currently full of different types of soup in those mugs, ready to pull out for a quick meal. And yep I still have an organiser calendar up on the kitchen wall! Old habits die hard!! 🙂
Looking back, I don't know how I did it - but I know it was incredibly hard, and I was always so tired. Happy to be a single empty nester and a household of ONE!!
My life is super full and I am starting to slip back into having take-out more often than I like. I have a health coaching business, a dog sitting business with my son, I home-school, I have 5 pets, I am active in 2 organizations and in the past year my son and husband had big health challenges and I am their primary care-taker. I have set up a time with my husband next week to deep clean the kitchen and organize it together. You are inspiring me to get back to stock checking and meal planning - starting now, it is such and time and money saver tool.
As I have said before I am 75 so a different generation. My dad got up first buttered bread made tea and fried 3 eggs for breakfast, mum gran me and my brother had half an egg on a slice of bread, dad had double, with a cup of tea. Dad brought us this in bed every week day morning, then we got up washed dressed and got out either to school or work. Breakfast cereal was to expensive.
I grew up in Israel and breakfast and dinner were the same, bread, eggs and salad. Lunch was the big cooked meal. Didn't know what cereal was until I moved to the U.S.
Tonight I cooked potatoes, carrots, gravy and stuffing, my daughter who lives in the downstairs apt cooked the turkey and cranberry sauce. We often eat together to save time and money, she works so I help out as I'm retired, we all get to enjoy a meal that would be too much for each of us separately and we all get leftovers for lunch next day. We also share the laundry machine, vacuum etc. We bought the duplex so we could have time together yet have separate lives when needed. She often brings home items we may need after work and I will wash a load of clothes for her when the dryer is been used to save energy. At work she has a small grill, blender and coffee machine as she can't leave for lunch as we don't have a car, we walk, cycle or take the bus. I have groceries delivered when big items are needed.
As a mother of 4 children my husband and I both worked and ran the house the same way. Sunday batch cooking was done for the week. The house cleaned from top to bottom. Now that we are retired we still do the same things except we do it any day of the week. Give the fur babies a hug. Jane and Mike thank you for everything you two do to help people all around the world. 😊
Hi Jane and Mike 🤗 Top tips! We're retired now but still get things prepped ahead for the next day and set the table and coffeemaker etc... Old habits are hard to break especially good ones that make our life easier. Meal planning is crucial for us too. I really only want to be cooking a few meals a week and the rest of the time we're happy with "reheats" as we call them. It helps that we both like eating the same leftovers 2 or 3 days in a row.
Absolutely agree with everything you have said. I did all of this as well or my week was garbage as a mother of 4 and working full time as a primary school teaching and my husband being a dairy farmer. There were never enough hours in a day or days in a week. I am loving your channel and have only recently found it to watch.
Oh me too I still use my systema containers & use them for frozen soups but also batch cook 2 - 3 days porridge & pop in the "soup" containers. Ideal as I can reheat when I want them. Ditto things like stews & casseroles 1 to eat, 1 for the fridge 1 (or more) for the freezer. I did very similar routines, daily but my dishwasher, washing etc. went on 1st thing in the morning as we had solar - then put washing on the line if possible or the rack if it wasn't - dry when I got home & mostly free 😁T.
I always have a box of crumbed or lightly battered fish fillets in the freezer as well as frozen vegetables. They are my go to when I am exhausted and just can't be bothered cooking. Throw the fish in the oven and the veg in the microwave and in 20 minutes you have a delicious meal.
In the past i worked 9 to 7, 4 days a week. I would be famished when i got home so i would heat up what i cooked the night before. After a small rest i would cook for the following night. Now i check the freezer and plan for the next 2 days so i can thaw what i need. I freeze in plastic bowls and transfer to glass for work so the plastic doesn't have to go in the microwave
I luckily do not have such a busy life but work Monday till Thursday. Where I work I can reheat my leftovers so I have mostly a freshly made dinner in the evening and take the rest to work the next day and might freeze one or two portions for "days with no energy for cooking" as well. For the morning I prepare a bircher müsli (don't know how to call it in english but its cereals with milk and in the morning I add a sliced apple and eat this during the morning hours at work at the PC). I also have everything I need for the day at work prepared in the evening before. And yes, it is really helpful if you can go on autopilot in the morning.
I've been traveling so I am a day late responding. This is very helpful and informative, but the biggest take away for me is how well you two work together. Jane and Mike = The A Team! ❤🐾❤️🐾
Wonderful tips Jane and Mike . My word you have led very busy lives. The only tip I have find works so well for me is up every morning at 6.00 except Sunday ! Shop as early as you can. Lidl opens at 8.00 and my local Tesco opens at 7.00. This means you can park quickly and fly through the isles. I use the scanner they provide in Tesco so no queue at the checkout! Thank you both so much. Your positive upbeat attitudes are very uplifting 🙏🙏🙏🙏
all great tips - we recently had a family bereavement which meant I was away from home for 5 days, my husband could just eat from the freezer, brought me some in so I was'nt relying on junk food, and now Im home, not having to worry about cooking from scratch - freezer is looking very depleted though, so a major batch cook is earmarked for next week
My new (to me) slow cooker is my new best friend. I work Tue - Fri, so batch cook on a monday. I'll have something in the slow cooker whilst I do other things on the hob. I freeze a lot of things so I can take what I need out in the morning and it's defrosted by the time I get home. Batch cooking things like a basic tomato sauce and freezing it in portions helps - especially when I did shift work and had no guaruntee off finishing on time. It can then be used for a variety of things, or thinned down as a base for soup. On another note, working in a PRU is HARD work - hats off to you for being able to be so organised alongside such a demanding job
Perfectly timed! I’m listening as I prep foods for work today and items for the fridge 😂 Egg bites in the oven cooking while I plan out today’s lunchbag
I was a stay at home mom. Just keeping up with cooking, cleaning and raising the kids was a challenge! My daughter works and seeing her juggle every thing with work and the kids just so hard. We help out what we can. Your suggestion are spot on.
Your organization sounds very good. I know my mom used to organize everything as well although she didn’t have a full-time job outside the house, she had our family with father and 3 kids and she always looked after her parents and my dad’s parents. Also my father’s sister lived with us and she had a full-time job during the day and also gave gymnastic classes in the evening and my mom cleaned houses for two days a week. I have always been single without kids and did have a full-time job, but I love to eat easy meals like bread with eggs or cheese, make some easy pasta or eat some rice with stir-fried veggies. I’m not a big meat eater but I do like fish now and then. My meals are not complete to most people’s standards because quite often the meat is missing or I eat just fish with vegetables, so mainly my meals contain only 2 ingredients instead of 3. I have never been very organized, more likely to be called chaotic 😂, but that is easy if you live alone. I’m not a great cook like you and since I got heavily depressed my house looks very chaotic as well lots of the time, but I’m always trying to get as organized as you ❤.
I used to do a lot of these things when my kids were still at home. Now, sometimes I will double the casserole or chili And freeze half for those extra busy days or for those low energy days. Great video Jane. What is a PRU?
As Jane said - Pupil Referal Unit - when an ordinary school can't cope - often for children with behavioural problems. Sometimes, for children with specific disabilities.
I do batch cooking so there is always something to eat in the freezer; I also lowered my standards and never wax our tile floors - a bit of a shocking result at first but they look fine without it. Just a note that leclerc is giving 50% off the purchase of 2 containers of specific laundry soap now. combined with 2 promotional coupons of -2 euros/container; I have enough soap to wash 80 loads of wash for 9 euros; just over 11 CENTS / load.
I love your tips Jane! My family has been sick this week with bad colds. I made a huge pot of chicken soup, and the next day a big pot of enchilada beef soup. It's been so nice to have the soup made up. I have cooked a few other things week, but mostly we ate the soup while we were sick.
I like to pull out all the bits and pieces in the fridge freezer on Sundays and put together a few casseroles etc. that I can use during the week. Saves money not wasting and helps keep my head above water while working full time and looking after my family and pets. I am exhausted when I come home from work, high school detention teacher. Having those meals prepped really is so helpful. If I have enough ingredients I make 2 of each dinner. One for the freezer another week. Last night we got all the carrots from the garden pulled and rinsed off. Tonight will be chopping for munching, meals, and for the freezer. I admit I don't get all the kitchen clearing up at night most nights. I have more energy in the morning before work. So, that's when I clear up what no one else in the family did. Leftovers, for lunch. If no leftovers, then I try and organize my lunch with other things. I polished my table and bench in kitchen this morning, unloaded and loaded dishwasher, and did laundry because I wake up at 4:30 a.m. quite often.
